  • R.C. Rahmen bridges have been widely constructed in the location of interchange or narrow road crossing. In addition, skewed or curved rahmen bridges are mostly constructed in comparison with normal rahmen bridges for the purpose of maintaining the route of road or considering the beauty of bridge. However, due to the functional characteristics, rahmen bridges are sustained under the direct vehicle loads and the side directional earth pressure so that the stress concentration with respect to the geometrical eccentricity can be occurred if rahmen bridges are constructed in large amount of skew. In this investigation, the behavior of skewed rahmen bridges which is located in curved route has been analysed to investigate the additional effects on the change of stress concentration. As a result, it is judged that the stress of curved rahmen bridges is more concentrated than the stress of straight rahmen bridges in the region of obtuse angle. However, in the middle of slab, the curve does not affect on the stress concentration.

  • In this study, an aspect of settlement, developed from different ground improvement method like suction drain method using vacuum pressure and vertical drain method using overburden pressure, was compared each other. In order to analyze settlement tendency of each method exactly, the finite element analysis program was used. The analyses of vertical settlement and lateral displacement for suction drain method and vertical drain method were conducted independently during the solving stage. The initial condition of drainage zone was fixed with 25m depth and 21m width. After the program analyses, the settlement condition had a different tendency with the ground improvement method. Especially, in the results of vertical drain method, the disparity of settlement between the middle of improved zone and unimproved zone. In the case of suction drain method, however, the difference of settlement was smaller than that of vertical drain method.

  • Passive air samplers with polyurethane foam (PUF) disks were employed to determine seasonal gas phase variation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air on Anmyeon island from March 2007 to January 2008. Sum of 13 PAHs ranged between $3.5\;ng/m^3$ and $27.6\;ng/m^3$. Total PAHs during the heating season was 6.2 times higher than non-heating season. The dominant PAHs components during sampling periods were low and middle molecular weight PAHs including phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene and chrysene. Gas exchange fluxes of PAHs across the air-water interface of the Yellow Sea were calculated using a modified two-film exchange model. PAHs fluxes ranged from $196\;ng/m^2/d$ net volatilization during summer to $3830\;ng/m^2/d$ net absorption during winter. Passive air sampler provides a convenient and cost-effective tool for measuring averaged gas phase PAHs, which was successfully used for calculation of gas exchange flux of PAHs in the Yellow Sea.

  • In a prevailing view of meaning and reference (cf. Frege 1892), words pick out entities in the physical world by virtue of meaning. Linguists and philosophers have argued whether the meaning of a word is inside or out-side language users' mind; but, in general, they have taken it for granted that words refer to entities in the physical world. Hilary Putnam (1975), based on his famous twin-earth thought experiment, argued that the meaning of a word could not be inside language users' head. In this paper, I point out that Putnam's argument makes sense only if words refer to entities in the physical world. That is, Putnam did not provide any argument against mentalistic semantics, since he erroneously assumed that meaning, but not reference, was inside our mind in mentalistic semantics. Mentalistic semanticist, however, assume that words pick out their references inside our head (instead of a possible outside world). A number of arguments for the mentalistic position come from psychology: studies on emotion and visual perception provide numerous cases where words cannot pick out entities from the physical world, but inside our head. The mentalistic theory has desirable consequences for the philosophy of language in that some classical puzzles of language (e.g. Russell's (1919) well-known puzzle of excluded middle) are explained well in the proposed theory.

  • The high-P metamorphic belt in central China, between the Sino-Korean and the Yangtze continental plates, is composed of the low-T and high-P metamorphic belt on the south and the high-T and high-P metamorphic belt on the north. The low-T and high-P metamorphic belt consists predominantly of bimodal metamorphic volcano-sedimentary sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic, characterized by the occurrences of blueschists, which have undergone a progressive metamorphism from blueschist through greenschist to epidote amphibolite facies with metamorphic conditions of 7~14 kb and 350~$560^{\circ}C$. The high-T and high-P and high-P metamorphic belt mainly consists of the Upper Archean to Lower Proterozoic crystalline basement characterized by the aboundant occurrences of eclogites formed at 12~28 kb and 620~$840^{\circ}C$. The formation of high-P metamorphic belt is related to the collision between the Sino-Korean and the Yangtze continental plates during Indosinian orogeny. The two belts may extend to central Korean Peninsula correlating respectively to the Okchon belt and the Kyonggi massif based on comparative studies of geography, tectonics and petrology. Therefore, much attention should be paid to search for such high-P metamorphic rocks as blueschists or eclogites in those two areas, which can play a key role for understanding the tectonic evolution of the Korean Peninsula.

  • We investigated science-gifted students' conceptions on science learning. The inventory instruments used for our study were a questionnaire on the conceptions of learning science (COLS) and a questionnaire on the approaches to learning science (ALS). Our analysis of the questionnaires showed that there are differences in the conceptions of science learning between the science-gifted and ordinary students. Science-gifted students perceive science learning as storing up of scientific knowledge, expansion of knowledge structure and achievement of a new view. There are no differences in the conceptions of science learning between male and female science-gifted students. There are also no differences in the conceptions of science learning in terms of subject preference such as physics, chemistry, biology and earth science. Our analysis offer assistance to teaching material and teaching method for science courses.

  • The behaviors of the ground in crossed zone and the existing upper tunnel in shallow cover due to the excavation of new lower tunnel Rectangularly crossed to that was studied. Model tests were performed in the large scale test pit, the size was '$4.0m(width){\times}3.8m(height){\times}4.1m(length)$'. Test ground was constructed uniformly by sand in middle density. Results of the model tests show that earth pressure and settlement of the ground in crossed zone were redistributed due to the longitudinal arching effect by the excavation of lower tunnel. Upper tunnel blocks stress flow due to the longitudinal arching effect by excavation of lower tunnel.

  • Total magnetic field and high-resolution bathymetric data were collected over nine seamounts to the northwest of the Marshall Islands in the western Pacific. Magnetic parameters including inclination and declination were calculated from the magnetic anomalies using inversion algorithm of Plouff (1976), and a corresponding paleomagnetic pole was determined with the magnetic parameters. The paleomagnetic poles determined in this study were compared with the previous apparent polar wander path (APWP) of Pacific plate. Most seamounts of the study area have normal polarity. The study reveals that all nine seamounts in the study area formed in the southern hemisphere during the Cretaceous based on their comparison with the APWP of Pacific plate. The ages estimated from paleomagnetic poles can be divided by age into three groups: the oldest (OSM1 and OSM3), middle age (OSM2, OSM4, and 6-2), and the youngest (OSM5-1, 5-2, 5-3, and 6-1). The fermer two groups and the latter seem to be coincident with two distinct pulses of Cretaceous volcanic activity (115-90 Ma and 83-65 Ma). As a whole the seamounts at southwest of the study area are older than at those northeast.

  • The northwestern part of Kyongsang Basin largely comprises interbedded sandstone and mudstone with local conglomeratic deposits in the basin margin, representing marginal alluvial fans and fluvial depositional environments. The non-marine successions are divided into successive stratigraphic units, each of which is unique in facies assemblages and architecture of sandstone bodies. Two stratigraphic units, i.e., Sinpyong-Anpyong and Jotap units are examined in terms of stratigraphic architecture and its causative processes. Detailed architectural analysis reveals that the channel systems of Sinpyong-Anyong unit were of braided patterns, whereas those of Jotap unit were dominated by small-scale bedforms. The difference in fluvial styles can be attributed to the changes in amount and caliber of sediment load and water discharge, which might have been ultimately governed by basin tectonics, climate, and base level. Along with the marked change in fluvial style, the two successive units show repeated expansions of distal, water-logged floodplains and lacustrine facies in the basal and uppermost parts of Sinpyong-Anpyong unit, where the proportion of channel sandstone bodies is relatively low. These stratigraphic intervals are succeeded by the sequences with proximal, well-drained floodplain facies and relatively coarser-grained channel sandstone bodies of higher proportion, reflecting the progradation of proximal systems (the middle part of Sinpyong-Anpyong unit and Jotap unit). The overall stratigraphic architecture can be ascribed to the fluctuations in accommodation space and sediment supply induced by repeated basin subsidence.

  • The natural constants of moving coil type geophone can be determined by free impedance and step force method. The former method was desirable for the measurement of natural frequency($f_o$), inertial mass(m) and damping factor($h_o$), but the latter method for sensitivity(G). In particular, the value by the latter method should be corrected for the noise by the long period movement of measurement device. The results of frequency characteristics from these constants operate the accelerometer and displacement system in the boundary of natural frequency.
