The effects of microwave treatment on the perservation of foods, such as a seaweed soup and sea stoned radish shreds, were studied. Microwave treatment of microbial cell suspensions revealed that viable cells decreased dramatically when heated to 6$0^{\circ}C$. However, it was unlikely that microwave treatment to 60 is enough to decrease the viable cell counts efficiently in a seaweed soup and radish shreds. It was thought that microwave heating to at least 7$0^{\circ}C$ as a final temperature was an important factor to reduce microbial cell counts in foods. When foods were heated to 7$0^{\circ}C$ with a repetitive 15 sec "on" followed by 30 sec "off", no big differences were observed in viable counts during storage at 2$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 days, as compared to those treated with a full power. The microwave treatment with three stages was designed to solve problems associated with variations depending on food volumes and difficulties of heat diffusion in a solid food to be irradiated with a microwave oven. The three stage method was found to have a similar efficiency in the reduction of viable cell counts in foods to microwave treatment at a full power and to conventional methods, such as water bath heating or boiling for 3 min with a gas range.in with a gas range.

A novel microwave-induced pyrolysis of polystyrene in motor oil was performed using a quartz tube reactor with silicon carbide as the microwave absorbent. Different pyrolysis conditions were investigated, such as time range from 30 minutes to 1 hour and power range from 180 to 250 watt. The distillate components were analyzed with GC-MS, and styrene, 1-methyl styrene, toluene, ethyl benzene were the four main products. Among these, styrene took over 70 percentages. Temperature of the complete pyrolysis using microwave was much lower than that of conventional thermal pyrolysis method.
High-frequency dielectric and microwave absorbing properties have been investigated in ferroelectric materials (BaTiO$_3$(BT), (1-x)Pb$Mg_{\frac{1}{3}}Nb_{\frac{2}{3}}$)O$_3$-xPbTiO$_3$(PMN-PT), (1-x)Pb$Mg_{\frac{1}{3}}Nb_{\frac{2}{3}}$O$_3$-xPb(Zn_{\frac{1}{3}}Nb_{\frac{2}{3}}$)O$_3$(PMN-PZN) for the aim of thin microwave absorbers in the frequency range of mobile telecommunication. The specimenns are prepared by conventional ceramic processing and complex permittivity has been measured by transmission/reflection method. The ferroelectric materials show high dielectric constant and dielectric loss in the microwave range and their domiant loss mechanism is considered to be domain wall relaxation. The microwave absorbance of BT 0.9PMN-0.1PT, and 0.8PMN-0.2PZN specimen (determined at 2) are found to be 99.5% (at a thickness of 4.5 mm), 50% (2.5 mm), and 30% (2.5 mm), respectively. It is suggested that PMN-PT or PMN-PZN ferroelectrics are good candidate materials for the spacer of λ/4 absorber. The use of ferroelectric materials is effective in reducing the thickness of absorber with their advantage of high dielectric constant.
Stabilized biocompatible superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were prepared by controlled coprecipitation method for hyperthermia application. ESR measurements determined that all of the interactions in the individual SPIONs (1 nm and 11 nm) were antiferromagnetic in nature because the ions contributed to the magnetization with a range of magnetic moments. In-situ monitoring of the temperature increment was performed, showing that the microwave absorption rate of the SPIONs was dispersed in an appropriate host media (polar or non-polar solvents) during microwave irradiation. Microwave absorption energy rates and heat loss of SPIONs in solvent were calculated by non-linear data fitting with an energy balance equation. The microwave absorption rates of SPIONs dispersed in solvent linearly increases when the concentration of SPIONs increases, implying that the microwave absorption rate can be tunable by changing the concentration of SPIONs.

A method of wideband constant phase control is proposed. This can be applied to reflection type phase shifter with p-i-n diode. Using the proposed method, a microwave phase network which consists of a transmission line and reactive circuit element is suggested. By determining theproper values of design parameters, the desired wideband constant phase with different specification can easily be designed. Also, using the proposed method, the parameters variation, and 1.1 dB of insertion loss in the range of 12% bandwidth.
Ni-Zn ferrite was sintered by microwave hybrid sintering method using microwave energy of 2.45 GHz, 700 W in the temperature range of 900$^{\circ}C$ ∼ 1070$^{\circ}C$. A high density (98%TD) Ni-Zn ferrite, added Bi$_2$O$_3$ and CuO, with a single phase was obtained by microwave sintering at 970$^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. All the sintered samples showed sintered density over 90% of TD. These results indicate that the processing time and energy consumption can be reduced significantly by microwave hybrid sintering method.

A design method of ultra-broadband microwave amplifier is presented. A lossy network is represented as the combination of a serial impedance component and a parallel admittance component, and the realizable ranges of the gain and the reflection coefficients are derived with the components connected to the input, output or interstage network. The matching network has been designed by using the serial and parallel immittance loci which have the constant gain or reflection coefficients within the realizable ranges. Using the proposed method, deisgn examples of ultra-broadband amplifiers operating from dc to 12GHz frequency range are presented.

In this paper, the synthesis procedufe of impedance matching network is presented for broad-band microwave amplifier design, whereby amplifier operating in the octave bandwidth is designed and fabricated in detail. The transfer function of the matching netowrks is synthesized by chebyshev approximation and element values for the networks of specified topology are calculatd for various MILs and ripples. After the transistor is modeled by negative-image device model, the synthesis procedure for matching networks is applied to broad-band amplifier design which has electrical performance of about 12dB gain in 4 to 8GHz range. Experimental results obtained from the fabricated amplifier are shown to approach the electrical performance designed in the given frequency range. Construction of the impedance matching networks by transfer function synthesis is very useful method for the design of broad-band microwave amplifiers.
We have studied the effect of sintering conditions on the long-range order parameter of the 1 : 2 cation ordering in Ba(Mg/sub 1/3/Nb/sub 2/3/)O₃microwave dielectrics prepared through a columbite precursor method. It is found that the order parameter depends strongly on the sintering conditions. As the heat-treatment time increases at 1350℃, the long-range order parameter decreases. When sintered at 1500℃ for 4 hours, BMN shows a high long-range order parameter of 0.94.

A simple and rapid sample pretreatment process necessary for determination of metal oxides in water was proposed. Samples were injected into the continuous-flow tube installed inside the microwave oven and the treated samples were cooled before entered to the Ion Chromatography (IC) or Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). By coupling this microwave digestion system with IC or ICP, a fully automatic analytical procedures may be easily established. In this study, two different types of digestion methods were considered; the open tubing method (OTM) and the restraint tubing method (RTM). The RTM was proved to be 3 times faster in digestion period and 10 times higher in detection range than the OTM. Validation of proposed sample digestion system was carried out by using an ICP. The results showed that both of continuous-flow methods, the OTM and the RTM were comparable in accuracies with the conventional batch-type vessel digestion method.
