  • The 1,000~500 hPa thickness and the $0^{\circ}C$ isotherm at 850 hPa have been used as the traditional predictors for wintertime precipitation-type forecasts. New approaches are taking on added significance as preexistence method of determination for wintertime precipitation-type exhibits more or less prevalent false alarms. Moreover thicknesses and thermodynamic profiles from ordinary upper-air observation were not adequate to monitor the atmospheric structure. In this regard, Microwave radiometric profiler microwave radiometer is useful in wintertime precipitation-type forecasts because radiometric measurements provide soundings at high temporal resolution. In this study, the determination and the predictability of wintertime precipitation-type were examined by using the calculated thicknesses, temperature of 850 hPa (T850) from a microwave radiometer, and surface observation at National Center for Intensive Observation of severe weather (NCIO) located at Haenam, Korea. The critical values for traditional predictors (thickness of 1000~500 hPa and T850) were evaluated and adjusted to Haenam region because snow rarely occurred with a 1000-500 hPa thickness > 5,300 m and T850 > $-10^{\circ}C$. Three thicknesses (e.g., 1,000~850, 1000~700, and 850~700 hPa thickness), T850, surface air temperature, and wet-bulb temperature were also evaluated as the additional predictors. A simple nomogram and a flow chart were finally designed to determine the wintertime precipitation-type using the microwave radiometer. The skill scores for the predictability of precipitation-type determination are considerably improved and the predictors showed the temporal variations in 12 hours before precipitation. We can monitor the hit and run snowfall in winter successful by realtime watch of the predictors, especially in commutes of big cities.

  • To combine the micro rain radar and microwave radiometer cloud liquid water, we estimate the cloud physical thickness from the difference between the MTSAT-1R cloud top height and cloud base height of visual observation of Daegwallyeong weather station, and the cloud liquid water path of micro rain radar is obtained by multiplying the liquid water content of micro rain radar and the estimated cloud physical thickness. The trend of microwave radiometer liquid water path agrees with that of the micro rain radar during small precipitation. We study these characteristics of micro rain radar and microwave radiometer for small precipitation to obtain the combined cloud water content of micro rain radar and microwave radiometer, constantly operated regardless to the rainfall.

  • A set of microwave remote sensing data collected with the newly developed UMass Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (IWRAP) during the 2002 Atlantic Hurricane Season was analyzed to further our understanding of the effect of precipitation on scatterometer wind vector retrieval. Coincident surface wind speed and precipitation measurements were provided by the UMass Simultaneous Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR). The differences between the wind estimations from IWRAP and SFMR under precipitation conditions of 0-100mm/hr and wind speed of 0-60m/s was calculated, from which the effect of precipitation on the wind vector retrieval using scatterometry is analyzed qualitatively.

  • Rainfall intensity was estimated using the MTSAT-1R infrared channels and the microwave satellite precipitation data. Brightness temperature of geostationary satellite is matched temporal and spatial to a variety of microwave satellite(SSM/I, SSMIS, AMSU-B, AMSRE, TRMM) precipitation data. Rainfall intensity was calculated by the look -up table using relationships of MTSAT-1R brightness temperature and microwave precipitation. Estimated rainfall is verified using by precipitation of TRMM satellite(TRMM3B42) and ground rainfall as AWS from Jul. 21 2008 to Jul. 25 2008. The results of rainfall estimated TRMM 2A12(TMI) that validated by AWS and TRMM3B42 precipitation are represented highly 0.38 and 0.61 by correlation coefficient, 5.81 mm/hr and 2.44 mm/hr by RMSE, 0.79 and 0.84 by POD and 0.65 and 0.87 by PC, respectively. Overall, estimated rainfall using by microwave satellite calculated 5 mm/hr or more comparing by AWS and 5 mm/hr or more comparing by TRMM3B42 precipitation, respectively. Validation results of correlation coefficient are shown series of TRMM 2A12, AMSRE, SSM/I, AMSU-B and SSMIS.

  • Analyses of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) microwave radiometer (TMI) and precipitation radar (PR) data show that the rainfall inhomogeneity, represented by the coefficient of variation, decreases as rain rate increases at the low resolution (the footprint size of TMI 10 GHz channel). The rainfall inhomogeneity, however, is relatively constant for all rain rates at the high resolution (the footprint size of TMI 37 GHz channel). Consequently, radiometric signatures at lower spatial resolutions are characterized by larger dynamic range and smaller variability than those at higher spatial resolution. Based on the observed characteristics, this study develops a low-resolution (${\sim}40{\times}40$ km) rainfall retrieval algorithm utilizing realistic rainfall distributions in the a-priori databases. The purpose of the low-resolution rainfall algorithm is to make more reliable climatological rainfalls from various microwave sensors, including low-resolution radiometers.

  • Ni-Cu-Zn ferrites were prepared by the co-precipitation and ferrite microwave absorbers on low temperature sintering were investigated in this work. The properties of its microwave absorbing and physical were analyzed into variations of Ni addition, calcination temperature, sintering temperature. From the analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns, we can see that all the particles have only a single phase spinel structure. In addition, the powders particle size distribution obtained the nano size. By increasing the Ni additive, the permeability of the powders was decreased and the loss factor increased at sintering temperature $1100^{\circ}C$. Also, we considered that it can used high frequency rage. We found that the $(Ni_{0.7}Cu_{0.2}Zn_{0.1}O)_{1.02}(Fe_{2}O_3)_{0.98}$ appeared microwave absorbing properties better than other composition.

  • The observation of liquid water content(LWC) and the estimation of precipitation enhancement by cloud seeding were made over the Andong in Korea from March 1997 through Feb 1998. A dual-channel microwave radiometer was used to measure the liquid water content and water vapor. It was shown that the 90% of observational period had the amount of less than 0.1 mm in LWC, and that the amount of precipitation was proportionally increased to liquid water content. The amount of LWC has maximum in summer and minimum in winter. The content of liquid cloud water was showed higher value from the time of 12 to the time of 17 except for summer season in which it extremely fluctuated with a large precipitation. The majority of liquid water content over the area occurred with westerly and southwesterly wind which were flowed from the Sobaek mountain. The ratio of horizontal LWC flux and vertical precipitation flux, $P_{en}$ is almost ranked in the interval of 0.0~0.5 with maximum of 0.5 in spring, 0.2 in summer and fall, and 0.1 in winter. Accordingly, it is estimated that the potential enhancement of precipitation over Andong area by cloud seeding has high value in spring with westerly wind.

  • Ni-Cu-Zn ferrites were prepared by the co-precipitation. Physical properties and Microwave absorbing properties were investigated in Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite for the aim of microwave absorbers. From the analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns, we can see that all the particles have only a single phase spinel structure. The loss factor was maximum at sintering temperature $1100^{\circ}C$. The initial permeability of sintered ferrite obtained was an average of 50. We found that the $(Ni_{0.7}Cu_{0.2}Zn_{0.1}O)_{1.02}(Fe_2O_3)_{0.98}$ can be used in ferrite rubber composite microwave absorber when sintering temperature at $1100^{\circ}C$.

  • The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is an US-Japan joint space mission to observe tropical and subtropical rainfall. This satellite is equipped with the world's first precipitation radar that operates at 13.8 GHz. We introduce the TRMM precipitation radar (PR) system, along with the PR data processing and analysis algorithms, and some observation results obtained by the TRMM PR. It is concluded that the TRMM PR can give quite useful rainfall data for the understanding of global climate changes, meteorology, climatology, atmospheric science, and also for the studies of satellite communication.
