  • Purpose: Dual cylindrical microwave chambers equipped with an ohmic heating tube were designed and fabricated to maximize the electric field strength for expeditious heat treatment of particulate foods. Methods: The efficacy of the combination heater was investigated by simulating the electric field distribution by using COMSOL Multiphysics software. Results: All components of the designed microwave heating unit were suitable for transmitting maximal microwave power to the load. The simulated electric field distribution implied that single-mode microwave heating would be sufficient for the steady generation of a highly localized heating zone in the cavity. During impedance matching, the calculated reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) was small, possibly implying minimal power loss and wave reflection in the designed microwave heating chamber. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the possibility of concentrating the microwave power at the centerline for a single-frequency microwave, for thermal treatment of multiphase foods without attenuating the microwave power.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the differences of textural characteristics and microstructure of sugared chestnuts between heated by a heater and microwave. Raw chestnuts were boiled and infiltrated the sugar in sugar syrup by heating. The content of WSP (water soluble pectin) was increased, but HSP (hydrochloric acid soluble pectin) was decreased by boiling and sugaring. This change was remarkable when it was boiled and sugared by a microwave heating. The hardness, gumminess and chewiness were more decreased in the sugared chestnut boiled and sugared with a microwave than that processed with a heater. Microstructure of sugared chestnut processed with a microwave heating showed the distruction of cell wall.

  • This study deals with the conventional consolidation methods like preloading and vertical drains. For it, Two different mechanism, i.e., increasing of permeability and evaporating of pore water were studied. The marine clays excavated in Incheon were heated at low temperature($90^{\circ}C$) to increase the permeability. Also, Microwave oven and high-temperature electric heater were used for pore water evaporation. Several points raised from the experiments. To fix them, the electric heating system was revised to upgrade the field application and drain efficiency of pore water, and the marine clays were heated by revised electric heater at high temperature($250^{\circ}C$). From Experimental result showed that results, high-temperature heater induced the pore water evaporation and displayed the excellent consolidation behavior. In addition, the cone index of heated clays were increased about 19 times, which suggested that electric heating system could be applied for ensuring the trafficability of heavy equipments.

  • We present in this Paper a microwave Power sensor fabricated by a standard CMOS process and a bulk micromachining process. The sensor consists of a CPW transmission line, a resistor as a healer, and thermocouple arrays. An input microwave heater, the resistor so that the temperature rises proportionally to the microwave power and tile thermocouple arrays convert it to an electrical signal. The sensor uses air bridged 8round of CPW realized by wire bonding to reduce tile device size and cost and to improve the thermal impedance. Al/poly-Si junctions are used for the thermocouples. Poly-Si is used for tile resister and Aluminium is for transmission line. The resistor and hot junctions of the thermocouples are placed on a low stress silicon nitride diaphragm to minimize a thermal loss. The fabricated device operates properly from 1㎼ to 100㎽\ulcorner of input power. The sensitivity was measured to be ,3.2~4.7 V/W.

  • Micron-sized metal wires are widely used in industries such as filtration, catalyst and composite materials, etc. In the wire drawing process, the die that is used conventionally is an effective and, at the same time, sensitive component. However, a typical array of the dies has caused many problems in the wire drawing process, e.g., large frictional force on the interface between wire and the resulting high heat generation, precise adjustment of the dies, extended cooling system, die abrasion, etc.. Because of these problems, there have been many works that are aiming at improving the efficiency of wire drawing process by analyzing the die geometry and by applying advanced die material to prolong the die life or even at developing a dieless wire drawing system. This paper is dealing with developing a new wire drawing system that is applicable to reduce the wire drawing steps with high draw ratio. The new wire drawing system does not use the dies, but use the self-induced heater that works on the basis of the resonant phenomenon of wire material. The electromagnetic wave is the heating source. The results of the study on the diameter reduction and microwave flow analysis show that the heating effectiveness of the wire is influenced by the energy distribution in the microwave propagation chamber. We can obtain diameter-reduced wires by using microwave in the dieless drawing process. Microwave as a heating source is capable of producing wires without applying dies in wire drawing process.

  • Heating method using electric heater was used to reduce water content in fingernail clippings. Authors found that low water content is helpful to measure EPR signal of fingernail sample with enhanced variability. Generally, natural dehydration happens in normal room condition at least one month and needs much time for using in experiment. So, artificial heating method is applied in this study for time savings. Fingernail samples were tested to find effect of water content to the EPR signal on microwave power levels for dosimetry. Low water content in fingernail reduced variability of EPR signal and makes it possible to measure accurate EPR signal. It also made it possible to measure constant movement of EPR signals on several microwave power levels. Although this method was difficult to apply directly in fingernail/EPR dosimetry, we, authors, believe that this heating method would be useful to differentiate MIS2 and RIS which are generally located at the same g-factor and almost impossible to be identified with each other.

  • We describe how to design and construct a LPCVD (Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition) apparatus which can be applicable to the study of reaction mechanism in general CVD experiments. With this apparatus we have attempted to make diamond like carbon films on the p-type (111) Si wafer from (H$_2$ + CH$_4$) gas mixtures. Two different methods have been tried to get products. (1)The experiment was carried out in the reactor with two different inlet gas tubes. One coated with phosphoric acid was used for supplying microwave discharged hydrogen gas stream, and methane has been passed through the other tube without the microwave discharge. In this method we got only amorphous carbon cluster products. (2) The gas mixture (H$_2$ + CH$_4$) has been passed through the discharge tube with the Si wafer located in and/or near the microwave plasma. In this case diamond-like carbon products could be obtained.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC), known for its excellent mechanical and chemical properties, is widely used in key industries such as aerospace, defense, and nuclear power generation. Due to its rapid heating characteristics when exposed to microwaves, SiC is being researched as a highly efficient heating element. In this study, Polycarbosilane (PCS) was treated by a mechanochemical reaction with iodine, followed by pyrolysis to create a microwave heating material. The effects of pyrolysis temperature and iodine additive content on microwave heating performance were investigated. The results showed that the fabricated specimen rapidly heated to a maximum of 800℃ within approximately 60 sec and maintained a stable temperature of 700~750℃ for up to 120 min.

  • Large area YBCO - films are series produced by thermal co-evaporation using a deposition scheme known as Garching process, which allows intermittent oxygen supply in a high vacuum ambient by an oxygen cup spaced closely underneath the moving substrates. The deposition area of 9" diameter is capable to handle very large wafers up to 8" diam. or numerous smaller wafers. The large distance between substrates and boat sources and an elaborate heater design guarantee excellent film uniformity over the entire deposition area. YBCO - films deposited by this technique are commercially fabricated for a variety of applications - the most prominent are resistive fault current limiters and microwave filters for mobile or satellite communications. IMUX and OMUX - filters are currently space qualined by Robert Bosch GmbH and are expected to be launched and installed on an experimental platform of the international space station ALPHA in 2001. Both of the above applications require quite different film specifications on the one hand, but at the same time extremely high uniformity and reproducibility on the other hand, since hundreds of YBCO - films are combined to large systems or have to be approved for manned space missions. The success of such projects is direct evidence that the technique of thermal evaporation is readily capable to meet these high demands and has become the major deposition technique to support the emerging HTS market.
