  • In this study, we synthesized CNTs(carbon nanotubes) on the glass substrate by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD), Effect of bias voltage on the grown behavior and morphology of CNTs were investigated. Recently, it has been proposed that aligned CNTs can also be achieved by the application of electric bias to the substrate during growth, the first time reported the bias effect such that the nanotube alignment occurred only when a positive bias was applied to the substrate whereas no aligned growth occurred under a negative bias and no tube growth was observed without bias. On the country, several researchers reported some different observations that aligned nanotubes could also be grown under negative substrate biases. This discrepancy as for the effect of positive and negative bias may indicate that the bias effect is not fully understood yet. The glass and Si wafers were first deposited with TiN buffer layer by r.f sputtering method, and then Ni catalyst same method, The thickness of TiN and Ni layer were 200 nm and 60 nm, respectively. The main process parameters include the substrate bias (0 to - 300 V), and deposition pressure (8 to 20 torr).

  • In this thesis, the metastable state diamond thin films have been deposited on Si substrates from methane-hydrogen and oxygen mixture using Microwave Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor deposition (MWPCVD) method. Effects of each experimental parameters of MWPCVD including methane concentrations, oxygen additions, operating pressure, deposition time, etc. on the growth rate and crystallinity were investigated. SEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy were employed to analyze the growth rate and morphology, crystallinity and prefered growth direction, and relative amounts of diamond and non-diamond phases respectively. As a methane concentration below 4%, the deposited films having well-defined facets could be obtained. As the methane concentration increases over 4%, the shape of films gradually changed into a amorphos form. The best crystallinity of the film at 3% in the Raman spectroscopy. Addition of oxygen to the methane-hydrogen mixture gave an improved film crystallinity at 50% oxygen concentration due to its more effectiveness in the selective removal of the non-diamond phased compared to the of H atom. on the contrary, the growth rate generally decreased by oxygen to from the more stable CO and CO2 is responsible for such an effect. Upon increasing the operating pressure and time, increased of growth rate and crystallinity were increased simultaneously.

  • Co and Fe doped multi-wall carbon nano-tubes (MWCNTs) synthesized by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique are investigated with synchrotron radiations at Pohang Light Source (PAL) and European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) measurement at C K, Co $L_{3,2}$ and Fe $L_{3,2}$-edges, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Co and Fe $L_{3,2}$-edges have been carried at 7B1 XAS KIST and 2A MS beamline, respectively, to understand the electronic structure and responsible magnetic interactions at room temperature. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at C K-edge shows significant p-bonding and Co and Fe L-edges proves the presence of $Co^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ in octahedral symmetry. Co and Fe doped MWCNTs show good XMCD spectra at 300K. The effect on the magnetism is also studied through swift heavy ion (SHI) radiations and magnetism is found enhanced and change in the electronic structure in Co-CNTs is investigated.

  • Synthesis diamond films have been deposited on the molybdenum substrates using an microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. The effects of deposition time, surface morphology, infrared transmittance and Raman scattering have been studied. Diamond deposited on molybdenum substrate for 100 hours by MW plasma CVD from $CH_4-H_2-O_2$ gas mixture had good crystallity with $100[{\mu}m]$ thickness needed for radiation detector. Diamond radiation detector of M-I-M type was made and the current of radiation detector was increased by increasing X-ray dose.

  • Diamond film was deposited on Si substrate by using microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) system. After thinning the cross section between diamond film and Si substrate by ion milling method, we investigated its interface via transmission electron microscopy We could observe that the diamond film was grown either directly on Si substrate or via the interlayer between diamond film and Si substrate. Thickness of the interlayer was varied along the cross section. The interlayer might mainly composed of Sic andlor amorphous carbon. We could observe the well-developed electron diffraction pattern of both Si and diamond around the interface. Based on this result, we can conjecture the initial growth behavior of diamond film on Si substrate.

  • In this research we report the significant contribution of the as-spun multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on the x-ray images formation using a low tube voltage x-ray source. The MWCNT, which was used for the fabrication of the spun CNT, was grown using a microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition machine. Electrical-optics simulation software was utilized to determine the electron field emission trajectory of the triode-structure-as-spun CNT-based x-ray source. It was shown that a significant amount of converging electrons hit the target anode producing a clear x-ray image. These x-ray images where produced at a small amount of anode current of 0.67 mA at a tube voltage of 5 kV with the gate voltage of 0 V. Also, comparisons of the radiographs at various exposure times of the sample where analyzed with and without an x-ray dose filter. Results showed that spatially-resolved images were formed using the as-spun CNT at a low tube voltage with a $54-{\mu}m$ Al x-ray filter. This study can be used for low-voltage medical applications.
