Gamma irradiation was applied to soybean(Glycine max.), Hwangkeum, at dose levels of 0, 5, 10 and 20 kGy to improve the physical properties of soybeans. The time to reach a fixed moisture content was reduced depending on the increment of soaking temperatures and applied irradiation dose levels. Irradiation at 5~20 kGy resulted in reduction in soaking time of the soybeans by about 3~6 hrs at soaking temperature of $20^{\circ}C.$ The degree of cooking of soybeans in boiling water was determined by measuring the maximum cutting force of cotyledon. The cutting force to reach complete cooking was about 145g/g. Irradiation at 5~20 kGy resulted in a reduction of cooking time of soybeans by 55~75% as compared to the nonirradiated soybean. In electron microscopic observation of seed coat inner, the parenchyma of nonirradiated soybean showed tight fibrillar structure, whereas that of irradiated soybeans showed loosened and deformed structure. The microstructure of compressed cells and cotyledon epidermis was also deformed by gamma irradiation. In subcellular structure of cotyledon, the roundness of protein body was deformed and changed to spike shape at 20 kGy. Also, the size of lipid body decreased as the irradiation dose levels increased.

The effect of pressureless-sintered temperature on the densification behavior, mechanical and electrical properties of the $SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites was investigated. The $SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were pressureless-sintered for 2 hours at temperatures in the range of $1,750{\sim}1,900[^{\circ}C]$, with an addition of 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3(6:4\;mixture\;of\;Al_2O_3\;and\;Y_2O_3)$ as a sintering aid. The relative density, flexural strength, vicker's hardness and fracture toughness showed the highest value of 84.92[%], 140[MPa], 4.07[GPa] and $3.13[MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}]$ for $SiC-TiB_2$ composites of $1,900[^{\circ}C]$ sintering temperature at room temperature respectively. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]\;to\;700[^{\circ}C]$. The electrical resistivity showed the value of $5.51{\times}10^{-4},\;2.11{\times}10^{-3},\;7.91{\times}10^{-4}\;and\;6.91{\times}10^{-4}[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$ for ST1750, ST1800, ST1850 and ST1900 respectively at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity). The resistance temperature coefficient showed the value of $3.116{\times}10^{-3},\;2.717{\times}10^{-3},\;2.939{\times}10^{-3},\;3.342{\times}10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C]$ for ST1750, ST1800, ST1850 and ST1900 respectively in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]\;to\;700[^{\circ}C]$. It is assumed that because polycrystallines, such as recrystallized $SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites, contain of porosity and In Situ $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ crystal grain boundaries, their electrical conduction mechanism are complicated. In addition, because the condition of such grain boundaries due to $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives widely varies with sintering temperature, electrical resistivity of the $SiC-TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites with sintering temperature also varies with sintering condition. It is convinced that ${\beta}-SiC$ based electroconductive ceramic composites for heaters or ignitors can be manufactured by pressureless sintering.
Crystal structures and magneto-optical properties of $(Mn_{0.5-Z}Sb_{0.5+Z})_{100-y}Pt_y$ (0$(Mn_{0.5-Z}Sb_{0.5+Z})_{100-y}Ag_y$ (0$^{\circ}C$ are C1b-type with fcc and NiAs-type with hcp, respectively. The MnSbAg films have a texture which the c-axis orientation is perpendicular to the film plane by annealing at 300 $^{\circ}C$ for less than 3 hours. The perpendicular anisotropy constants of the $Mn_{47.4}Sb_{47.5}Ag_{5.1}$ film annealed at 300 $^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours are $K_1=6.6{\times}10^5 \; erg/cm^3\;and\;K_2=1.9{\times}10^5\; erg/cm^3$. The Kerr rotation angle of MnSbPt films increases but that of MnSbAg film decreases by decreasing incident wavelength within the range of 700$\leq$ λ$\leq$1000 nm. High polar Kerr angles of 1.7$^{\circ}$ (λ =700 nm) and 0.6$^{\circ}$ (λ =1000 nm), 0.2$^{\circ}$ (λ =700 nm) and 0.97$^{\circ}$ (λ =1000 nm) have been obtained from $Mn_{41.1}Sb_{44,9}Pt_{14.0}$ and $Mn_{47.4}Sb_{47.5}Ag_{5.1}$ alloy films, respectively.

Characteristics of $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ phosphorescent phosphors synthesized by solid state reaction and polymerized complex method were comparatively analyzed. In order to evaluate thermal stability of $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ phosphorescent phosphors at high temperature, phosphorescent properties of $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ were investigated with thermal treatment at $1250^{\circ}C$ under reducing atmosphere, which was the general heat treatment conditions for ceramic manufacturing process. The phosphorescent properties of thermally treated $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ phosphors synthesized by solid state reaction and polymerized complex method were investigated. The crystal structure and crystallite size were observed through XRD analysis. Microstructure and particle size of thermally treated $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ phosphors were analyzed by SEM and PSA. Photoluminescence and afterglow characteristics of thermally treated $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ phosphorescent phosphors were measured by spectrofluorometer.
$(Ni, Zn)Fe_2O_4$ powders were prepared through self-propagating high temperature synthesis reaction and the effects of initial zinc oxide powder size and oxygen pressure on the magnetic properties of the final combustion products were studied. The ferrite powders were combustion synthesized with iron, iron oxide, nickel oxide, and zinc oxide powders under various oxygen pressures of 0.5~10 atmosphere after blended in n-hexane solution for 5 minutes with a spex mill, followed by dried at 120 $^{\circ}C$ in vacuum for 24 hours. The maximum combustion temperature and propagating rate were about 1250 $^{\circ}C$ and 9.8 mm/sec under the tap density, which were decreased with decreasing ZnO size and oxygen pressure. The final product had porous microstructure with spinel peaks in X-ray spectra. As the ZnO particle size in the reactant powders and oxygen pressure during the combustion reaction increase, coercive force, maximum magnetization, residual magnetization, squareness ratio were changed from 1324 Oe, 43.88 emu/g, 1.27 emu/g, 0.00034 emu/gOe, 37.8$^{\circ}C$ to 11.83 Oe, 68.87 emu/g, 1.23 emu/g, 0.00280 emu/gOe, 43.9 $^{\circ}C$ and 7.99 Oe, 75.84 emu/g, 0.791 emu/g, 0.001937 emu/gOe, 53.8 $^{\circ}C$ respectively. Considering the apparent activation energy changes with oxygen pressure, the combustion reaction significantly depended on initial oxygen pressure and ZnO particle size.
In order to study the effect of additives $SiO_{2}$ on the magnetic properties of hexaferrite sheet magnet, we used X-ray diffractometer, Mossbauer spectrometer, and VSM magnetometer. We have prepared $Ba_{0.25}Sr_{0.75}Fe_{12}O_{19}$ green sheets by the Dr. Blade method. Most of samples have a magnetoplurnbite crystal structure of typical M-type hexaferrite. The lattice parameters are found not to be affected by the addition of $SiO_{2}$. ${\alpha}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ phase develops above $SiO_{2}$ 2.0 wt.%. Isomer shifts indicate that the valence of Fe ions is trivalent. Curie temperatures decrease slightly with increasing $SiO_{2}$ concentrations. It means that the $Si^{4+}$ subsitution for 12k-site $Fe^{3+}$ has an effect on the superexchange interactions Fe-O-Fe, which change the distance and the angle between cations and anions. It was suggested that ${\alpha}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ phase results from the excessive Fe produced by subsituting $Si^{4+}$ for $Fe^{3+}$. Based upon the results of $Ba_{0.25}Sr_{0.75}Fe_{12}O_{19}$ added with $SiO_{2}$, we concluded that $H_{c}$, $M_{s}$ and $M_{r}$ depend more strongly on the microstructure chracteristics than on the cation substitution.

Statement of problem: The success of implants depends on intimate and direct contact of implant material on bone tissue and on functional relationship with soft tissue contact. Creation and maintenance of osseointegration depend on the understanding of the tissue's healing, repairing, and remodeling capacity and these capacities rely on cellular behavior. Altering the surface properties can modify cellular responses such as cell adhesion, cell motility, bone deposition, Therefore, various implant surface treatment methods are being developed for the improved bone cell responses. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the responses of osteoblast-like cells to surface-modified titanium. Materials and Methods: The experiment was composed of four groups. Group 1 represented the electropolished surface. Group 2 surfaces were machined surface. Group 3 and Group 4 were anodized surfaces. Group 3 had low roughness and Group 4 had high roughness. Physicochemical properties and microstructures of the discs were examined and the responses of osteoblast-like cells to the discs were investigated. The microtopography was observed by SEM. The roughness was measured by three-dimension roughness measuring system. The microstructure was analyzed by XRD, AES. To evaluate cell responses to modified titanium surfaces, osteoblasts isolated from calvaria of neonatal rat were cultured. Cell count, morphology, total protein measurement and alkaline phosphatase activities of the cultures were examined. Results and Conclusion: The results were as follows 1. The four groups showed specific microtopography respectively. Anodized group showed grain structure with micropores. 2. Surface roughness values were, from the lowest to the highest, electropolished group, machined group, low roughness anodized group, and high roughness anodized group. 3. Highly roughened anodized group was found to have increased surface oxide thickness and surface crystallinity. 4. The morphology of cells, flattened or spherical, were different from each other. In the electropolished group and machined group, the cells were almost flattened. In two anodized groups, some cells were spherical and other cells were flattened. And the 14 day culture cells of all of the groups were nearly flattened due to confluency. 5. The number of attached cells was highest in low roughness anodized group. And the machined group had significantly lower cell count than any other groups(P<.05). 6. Total protein contents showed no difference among groups. 7. The level of alkaline phosphatase activities was higher in the anodized groups than electropolished and machined groups(P<.05).
In this work, Ag3PO4/In2S3 nanocomposites with low loading of In2S3 (5-15 wt %) are fabricated by two step chemical precipitation approach. The microstructure, composition and improved photoelectrochemical properties of the as-prepared composites are studied by X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photocurrent density, EIS and amperometric i-t curve analysis. It is found that most of In2S3 nanoparticles are deposited on the surfaces of Ag3PO4. The as-prepared Ag3PO4/In2S3 composite (10 wt%) is selected and investigated by SEM and TEM, which exhibits special morphology consisting of lager size substrate (Ag3PO4), particles and some nanosheets (In2S3). The introduction of In2S3 is effective at improving the charge separation and transfer efficiency of Ag3PO4/In2S3, resulting in an enhancement of photoelectric behavior. The origin of the enhanced photoelectrochemical activity of the In2S3-modified Ag3PO4 may be due to the improved charge separation, photocurrent stability and oriented electrons transport pathways in environment and energy applications.
The effects of annealing in rotating magnetic field after deposition on electromagnetic properties of $Co_{82}Zr_6Mo_{12}$ thin (200~1200 $\AA$) films prepared by RF-magnetron sputtering were investigated in terms of microstructure and surface morphology. The coercivity decreases, but $4{\pi}M_5$ does not change with increasing the film thickness. The coercivity of the films was decreased below 300 $^{\circ}C$ due to stress relief and decreasing the surface roughness, while increased at 400 $^{\circ}C$ due to partial grain growth. And then, $4{\rho}M_5$ was almost independent of annealing temperatures below 200 $^{\circ}C$, but increased from 7.4 kG to 8.0 kG at 300 $^{\circ}C$ and at 400 $^{\circ}C$, which was caused by precipitation and growth of fine Co particles in the films. The electrical resistivity of films was decreased with increasing annealing temperatures and the magnetoresistance was a negative value of nearly 0 $\mu$$\Omega$cm. After annealing at 300 $^{\circ}C$, maximum effective permeability was 1200 to the hard axis of the thin films according to high frequency change. Considering the practical application of biasing layers of the films for magnetoresistive heads, optimal annealing conditions was obtained after one hour annealing at 300 $^{\circ}C$ in 400 Oe rotating magnetic field.
Hydration is the main reason for the growth of the material properties. An exact parameter to control the chemical and physical process is not the time, but the degree of hydration. Therefore, it is reasonable that development of all material properties and the formation of microstructure should be formulated in terms of degree of hydration. Mathematical formulation of degree of hydration is based on combination of reaction rate functions. The effect of moisture conditions as well as temperature on the rate of reaction is considered in the degree of hydration model. This effect is subdivided into two contributions: water shortage and water distribution. The former is associated with the effect of W/C ratio on the progress of hydration. The water needed for progress of hydration do not exist and there is not enough space for the reaction products to form. The tatter is associated with the effect of free capillary water distribution in the pore system. Physically absorption layer does not contribute to progress of hydration and only free water is available for further hydration. In this study, the effects of chemical composition of cement, W/C ratio, temperature, and moisture conditions on the degree of hydration are considered. Parameters that can be used to indicate or approximate the real degree of hydration are liberated heat of hydration, amount of chemically bound water, and chemical shrinkage, etc. Thus, the degree of heat liberation and adiabatic temperature rise could be determined by prediction of degree of hydration.
