  • In this paper, series-fed mirostrip array anteenas with coupling-slots are prposed and their operating characteristics are analyzed based on analyzed based on analytical and experimental results. An accurate analysis method for the slot-coupled feed structure is based on using both circuit coupling between anteenas and full-wave analysis which use travling wave mode and non-traveling wave mode on feed line. The basis functions that used for the numerical analysis bas been determined depending upon the accuracy, convergence properties of the solution, and the computation time:The patch uses 3 EB mode, the slot uses 1PWS mode, and feeders use 5 PWS mode. Series-fed array antennas have been designed, built, and tested in a standing-wave configuration. Using the results of the full-wave analysis, the chebyshev array antennas consisting of 8 elements are designed and fabricated changing the amount excited to each array element by adjusting slot length and by the slot position relative to the feeder. Experiment results show that the series-fed array antenna designed by adjusting the slot position relative to the feeder is superior to that designed by slot length.

  • In this paper, the design, fabrication and experiment on a planar array antenna with a flat-topped radiation pattern for a mobile base station antenna were described. The current distribution of an antenna aperture, which is easily realizable in a feeding network compared with the conventional one of sin(x)/x was optimized for shaping a desired flat-topped radiation pattern. The planar array antenna designed in this paper has a rectangular lattice and is composed of array elements of 16${\times}$8. Each radiating element, which is a microstrip element fed coaxially, has a linear vertical polarization and the feed network which use a Wilkinson power divider and a 180$^{\circ}$ ring hybrid coupler as a base element is designed. The flat-topped radiation pattern with 90$^{\circ}$ is shaped by 16 array elements with the element spacing of 0.55 λ$_{ο}$ in the azimuth plane, and the normal radiation pattern with 10$^{\circ}$ is shaped by 8 array elements with the element spacing of 0.65 λ$_{ο}$ in the elevation plane. Also, the planar array antenna is symmetrically divided into four parts. It consists of one hundred-twenty-eight radiating elements, thirty-two 1-4 column dividers, low 1-8 row dividers and one 1-4 input power divider. In order to verify electrical performances of the planar way antenna proposed in this paper, the experimental breadboard operated in tile band of 1.92~2.17 GHz(IMT2000 band) was fabricated, and its experimental results were a good agreement with simulation ones.

  • In this paper, a dual-band microstrip-fed monopole antenna with a DGS(defected ground structure) for WLAN(wireless local area network) applications is presented. The antenna consists of a monopole and a defected ground, which were etched on both sides of the FR-4 substrate. The defected ground structure was used to obtain the dual band, while the step-by-step reduction in the monopole width was used to improve the impedance matching of the antenna. The antenna has an overall compact size of $44{\times}51{\times}1.6mm^3$, which was optimized by varying the size of the monopole and the ground plane such that it may resonate at the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands of the WLAN. The measurement results showed that the antenna operates in the frequency band of 210 MHz(2.29~2.50 GHz) and 900 MHz(5.05~5.95 GHz) for a VSWR under 2, and showed omnidirectional radiation pattern at all desired frequencies.

  • A general analysis of a microstrip-to-vertically mounted slotline(VMS) coupler is presented with a view to developing an equivalent circuit, and the efficient evaluation of the related circuit element values. Based on this theory, the effects of frequency and structure parameters such as aperture length and VMS width on the characteristics of the coupler are studied. In order to check the validity of the proposed analysis and design theory, a C-band linearly tapered slot antenna fed by an aperture-coupled back-to-back microstripline-to- VMS coupling structure is optimally designed using a hybrid genetic algorithm. Moreover, the computed characteristics from the network analysis is compared to the measurement and simulation results. The obtained results fully validate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed network model.

  • This paper presents a design of wide angle steering microstrip Rotman lens operating over broadband frequency range for Electronic Warfare equipments. It has a compact and simple structure which it is easy to manufacture repetitively. The lens is modelled as a 2-dimension planar circuit, the contour integral method is performed over entire lens contour and the transmission coefficients from 8 beam ports to 8 array ports are found. The measured results are well agreed with those of analysis. Prediction of the multibeam array pattern fed by linear array antenna shows $\pm$65$^{\circ}$ of beam steering and $\pm$5 dB insertion loss deviation over 3:1 frequency range.

  • A wideband bow-tie antenna fed by wideband microstrip-coplanar stripline(CPS) balun and band notch structures that can be applied to bow-tie antenna are proposed in this paper. In order to increase bandwidth, bow-tie radiators are reshaped so that the surface current flows continuously, and wideband impedance matching is achieved by adjusting strip width and spacing of CPS feeding line. The VSWR is measured as 2:1 over the wide frequency range of 2.3~12 GHz. The fabricated antenna size is $60mm{\times}60mm$. In order to achieve the band-notch function at WLAN(5.8 GHz), ${\lambda}/4$ folded-slits located ${\lambda}/4$ away from feeding point are utilized. To minimize the slit size, folded-slit type is adopted. The measured VSWR is 7:1 and gain attenuation is 14 dB at 5.8 GHz.
