  • Process-based crop models have been used to assess the impact of climate change on crop production. These models are implemented in procedural or object oriented computer programming languages including FORTRAN, C++, Delphi, Java, which have a stiff learning curve. The requirement for a high level of computer programming is one of barriers for efforts to develop and improve crop models based on biophysical process. In this study, we attempted to develop a Chinese cabbage model using Microsoft Excel with Visual Basic for Application (VBA), which would be easy enough for most agricultural scientists to develop a simple model for crop growth simulation. Results from Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Research (SPAR) experiments under six temperature conditions were used to determine parameters of the Chinese cabbage model. During a plant growing season in SPAR chambers, numbers of leaves, leaf areas, growth rate of plants were measured six times. Leaf photosynthesis was also measured using LI-6400 Potable Photosynthesis System. Farquhar, von Caemmerer, and Berry (FvCB) model was used to simulate a leaf-level photosynthesis process. A sun/shade model was used to scale up to canopy-level photosynthesis. An Excel add-in, which is a small VBA program to assist crop modeling, was used to implement a Chinese cabbage model under the environment of Excel organizing all of equations into a single set of crop model. The model was able to simulate hourly changes in photosynthesis, growth rate, and other physiological variables using meteorological input data. Estimates and measurements of dry weight obtained from six SPAR chambers were linearly related ($R^2=0.985$). This result indicated that the Excel/VBA can be widely used for many crop scientists to develop crop models.

  • In this research, a method of deriving statistical weight prediction formula which is used during the conceptual design phase was studied and it was programmed using Microsoft Excel and verified by applying to jet transport aircraft. The database was built while referencing the variables of conventional wing weight estimation formulas and it was used for modeling the jet transport wing weight regression equation. The model was evaluated using the K-fold cross validation method to solve the overfitting problem of the model.

  • In recent years, power equipment and system standards have been increasing in both number and complexity. The standards that will soon be introduced to KOREA is the transmission system standards for harmonic emission limits assessing in distorting loads. Utility engineers, being under increasing time constraints, are turning more and more to software to quickly solve problems. This paper describes the methodology used to implement the above standards in Microsoft Excel in order to assist utility engineers to readily apply these standards in practical situations.

  • In this study, we examined the suitability of ten disinfection models for predicting the inactivation of Artemia sp. via single or combined physical and chemical treatments. The effect of Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) on the inactivation of Artemia sp. was examined experimentally. Disinfection models were fitted to the experimental data by using the GInaFiT plug-in for Microsoft Excel. The inactivation model were evaluated on the basis of RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), SSE (mean Sum Square Error) and $r^2$. An inactivation model with the lowest RMSE, SSE and $r^2$ close to 1 was considered the best. The Weibull+Tail model was found to be the most appropriate for predicting the inactivation of Artemia sp. via electrolytic treatment and electrolytic-ultrasonic combined treatment. The Log-linear+Tail model was the most appropriate for modeling inactivation via homogenization and combined electrolytic-homogenization treatment. The double Weibull disinfection model was the most suitable for the predicting inactivation via ultrasonic treatment.

  • In general, a simulation project requires much time and money since we should develop a model that works similarly to the system at a level consistent with the project purposes. Therefore, more active research studies are required to reduce the time needed for the modeling process. This is achievable by minimizing the possible trial and error during the model development process through the appropriate conceptual model design and the automated generation of the simulation model. This paper presents a tool automatically generating an Arena model after developing a conceptual simulation model. Because our proposed tool is based on the popular Microsoft Excel and Visio, it is expected to be practically used at many industrial sites. Finally, we showed the effectiveness of the newly suggested tool by applying it to an imaginary simulation project.

  • In order to evaluate the potential radiological risks for the reuse of the site after decommissioning of nuclear facilities, a mathematical model was developed and materialized into the Microsoft $Excel{\circledR}$ spreadsheets frame. A set of input parameter values was proposed, which is useful in the preliminary risk screening step before the detailed evaluation with the site-specific data. It appeared that the screening levels calculated by the present model was agreed with the derived concentration guideline limits resulted from RESRAD Ver.6.2 and the German dose criteria for releasing a nuclear site from regulatory control.

  • In this paper, we consider the development of encryption of DES (data encryption standard) based on Microsoft Excel Macro, which was adopted as the FIPS (federal information processing standard) 46 of USA in 1977. Concrete explanation of DES is given. Algorithms for DES encryption are adapted to Excel Macro. By repeating the 16 round which is consisted of diffusion (which hide the relation between plain text and cipher text) and the confusion (which hide the relation between cipher key and cipher text) with Excel Macro, we can easily get the desired DES cipher text.

  • Since smart phones or tablet PCs have been widely used recently, the users can create and edit documents anywhere in real time. If the input and edit flows of documents can be traced, it can be used as evidence in digital forensic investigation. The typical document application is the MS(Microsoft) Office. As the MS Office applications consist of two file formats that Compound Document File Format which had been used from version 97 to 2003 and OOXML(Office Open XML) File Format which has been used from version 2007 to now. The studies on MS Office files were for making a decision whether the file has been tampered or not through detection of concealed items or analysis of documents properties so far. This paper analyzed the input order of text cells on MS Excel files and shows how to figure out what cell is the last edited in digital forensic perspective.
