The slip effect from the molecular interaction between fluid particles and solid surface atoms plays a key role in microscale fluid transport and heat transfer since the relative importance of surface forces increases as the size of the system decreases to the microscale. There exist two models to describe the slip effect: the Maxwell slip model in which the slip correction is made on the basis of the degree of shear stress near the wall surface and the Langmuir slip model based on a theory of adsorption of gases on solids. In this study, as the first step towards developing a general purpose numerical code of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for computational simulations of microscale fluid flow and heat transfer, two slip models are implemented into a finite element numerical code of a simplified equation. In addition, a pressure-driven gas flow in a microchannel is investigated by the numerical code in order to validate numerical results.
The induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO) is a kind of electroosmotic flow which is generated by the electrical charge induced by an externally-applied electric field. That kind of electrokinetic phenomenon provides a nonmechanical technique to handle microscale flows and particles. In this work, we report that the ICEO-like flow is observed around two kinds of circular-cylindrical rod submerged in a dielectric liquid. The conductivity of the solution is varied by adding a surfactant. The flow field is visualized by the PIV method, and average flow speed shows a remarkable dependence on electrical input frequency. Interestingly, the characteristics of the flow are quite different from the conventional ICEO with respect to the flow direction and the locations of center of vortices.

The paper is to study on the simulation of the micro/macroscale thermo-electrochemical model of a single cell of anode-supported SOFC with direct internal reforming. The coupled heat and mass transport, electrochemical and reforming reactions, and fluid flow were simultaneously simulated based on mass, energy, charge conservation. The micro/macroscale model first calculates the detailed electrochemical and direct internal reforming processes in porous electrodes based on the comprehensive microscale model and then solve the macroscale processes such as heat and mass transport, and fluid flow in SOFCs with assumption of fully-developed flow in gas channel. The simulation results evaluate the overall performance by analyzing distributions of mole fraction, current density, temperature and microstructural design in co/counter flow configurations.
In this study, the effects of atmospheric stability and surface temperature on the microscale local airflow are investigated in a hydrological suburban area using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The model domain includes the river and industrial complex for analyzing the effect of water system and topography on local airflow. The surface boundary condition is constructed using a geographic information system (GIS) data in order to more accurately build topography and buildings. In the control experiment, it is shown that the topography and buildings mainly determine the microscale airflow (wind speed and wind direction). The sensitivity experiments of atmospheric stability (neutral, stable, and unstable conditions) represent the slight changes in wind speed with the increase in vertical temperature gradient. The differential heating of ground and water surfaces influences on the local meteorological factors such as air temperature, heat flow, and airflow. These results consequentially suggest that the meteorological impact assessment is accompanied by the changes of background land and atmospheric conditions. It is also demonstrated that the numerical experiments with very high spatial resolution can be useful for understanding microscale local meteorology.
The incomplete saturation and the void formation during the resin infiltration into fibrous porous media in the resin transfer molding process cause failure in the final product during its service. In order to better understand flow behavior during the filling process, a finite-element scheme for transient flow simulation across the micro-structured fibrous media is developed in the present work. A volume-of- fluid (VOF) method has been incorporated in the Eulerian frame to capture the evolution of flow front and the vertical periodic boundary condition has been combined to avoid unwanted wall effect. In the microscale simulation, we investigated the transient filling process in various fiber structures and discussed the mechanism leading to the flow fingering in the case of random fiber distribution. Effects of the filling pressure, the shear-thinning behavior of fluid and the volume fraction on the flow front have been investigated for both intra-tow and the inter-tow flows in dual-scale fiber tow models.

An analytical solution for a vertically stratified viscous flow in a microchannel with a rectangular cross-section is constructed, assuming fully developed laminar flow where the interfaces between the fluid layers are flat. Although the solution is for n-layer flow, restricted results to symmetrical three-layer flow are presented to investigate the effects of the viscosity and thickness ratios of the fluid layers and the aspect ratio of the microchannel on the flow field. Relations between the flow rate and thickness ratios of the fluid layers with varying viscosity distributions are found, considering the cross -sectional velocity profiles which vary noticeably with the three parameters and differ significantly from the velocity profiles of the flow between infinite parallel plates. Interfacial instability induced by the viscosity stratification in the microchannel is discussed referring to previous studies on the instability analysis for plane multilayer flow. Exact solution derived in the present study can be used for examining a diffusion process and three -dimensional stability analysis. More works are needed to formulate the equations including the effects of interfacial' tension between immiscible liquids and surface wettability which are important in microscale transport phenomena.
Ion exchange membrane can transfer only cation or anion in electrically conductive fluids. Recent studies have revealed that such selective ion transport can initiate electroconvective instability, resulting vortical fluid motions on the membrane. This so-called electroconvective vortex (a.k.a. electroconvection (EC)) has been in the spotlight for enhancing an ion flux in electrochemical systems. However, EC under shear flow has not been investigated yet, although most related systems operate under pressure-driven flows. In this study, we present the direct visualization platform of EC under shear flow. On the transparent silicone rubber, microscale channels were fabricated between ion exchange membranes, while allowing microscopic visualization of fluid flow and ion concentration changes on the membranes. By using this platform, not only we visualize the existence of EC under shear flow, its unique characteristics are also identified: i) unidirectional vortex pattern, ii) its advection along the shear flow, and iii) shear-sheltering of EC vortices.

Fluid characteristics at microscale were tried to be solved in this paper by showing how they deviate with conventional flow governing equations. (e.g. Navier-Stokes Equation) In earlier studies, this deviation phenomena was caused because of omitting no slip flow condition, micropolar effect and EDL(Electric Double Layer)effect of fluid which are usually negligible at macroscaled phenomena. The characteristics of fluid flow were tried to be studied by measuring pressure difference of specified length of the channels using the almost squared micromachined channels. By acquiring pressure difference, we could drive different values (viscosity, flow velocity. etc) from it and these data will be compared with macroscaled flow characteristics. As making microchannel is not easy work and that our knowledge is at mere stage, we had to fail to make it in this time. The hardest thing in this work is to make a hole which is directly connected with channel. The more efficient and easy way of making microchannel is proposed in this paper.
3-D visualization using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in a chaotic micromixer was performed as a reproduction experiment and the feasibility of 3-0 imaging technique in the microscale was confirmed. For diagonal micromixer (DM) and two types of staggered herringbone micromixers (SHM) designed by Whitesides et al., to verify the evolution of mixing, cross sectional images are reconstructed at the end of every cycle. In a DM, clockwise rotational flow motion generated by diagonal ridges placed on the floor of micromixer is observed and this motion makes the fluid commingle. On the contrary, there are two rotational flow structures in the SHM and the centers of rotation exchange their position each other every half cycle because of the V shape of ridges varying their orientation every half cycle. Local rotational flow and local extensional flow generated by the complicate ridge pattern make the flow be chaotic and accelerate the mixing of fluid. The dominant parameter that influences on the mixing characteristic of SHM is not the length of micromixer but the number of ridges under the same flow configurations.
As micro-electronic devices are getting miniaturized, technology that can manage the temperature of confined area is required. On these demands, microchannel heat exchanger is suggested as promising solution. However, due to laminar flow created inside the microchannel with high Reynolds number suppresses diffusion based natural convection, leads to low heat transfer performance of microchannel. This paper shows how acoustic streaming flow enhances the heat transfer performance inside the microchannel without using additional structure or nanoparticle inside the straight microchannel and fluid numerically. Various parameters, such as Reynolds number (Re), initial displacement (ξ) was adopted to evaluate the influence of acoustic streaming flow. The results showed that acoustic streaming flow can disturb the thermal boundary, by creating the micro-vortex inside the straight-microchannel and enhance the heat transfer performance.
