The microgrid concept assumes a cluster of loads and microsources operating as a single controllable system that provides a new paradigm for defining the operation of distributed generation. This system can be operated as both grid-connected mode and islanded mode. In other words, the microgrid can be operated to meet their special need; such as economics in steady state and local reliability in islanded mode due to the grid fault. This paper presents the AGC (Automatic Generation Control) method for microgrid with EMS (Energy Management System).
A dynamic economic dispatch and control method is proposed to minimize the overall generating cost for a stand-alone microgrid in DongAo Island, which is integrated with wind turbine generator, solar PV, diesel generator, battery storage, the seawater desalination system and the conventional loads. A new dispatching strategy is presented based on the ranking of component generation costs and two different control modes, in which diesel generator and battery storage alternate to act as the master power source to follow system power fluctuation. The optimal models and GA-based optimization process are given to minimize the overall system generating cost subject to the corresponding constraints and the proposed dispatch strategy. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified in the stand-alone microgrid in DongAo Island, and the results provide a feasible theoretical and technical basis for optimal energy management and operation control of stand-alone microgrid.

This paper analyzes voltage control method in order to supply high-quality power for stand-alone microgrid. Stand-alone microgrid is composed of battery bank, stand-alone PCS and controllable loads. The main role of stand-alone PCS is to supply high-quality power to loads as main source by using stable voltage method regardless of load conditions. In particularly, output voltage of stand-alone PCS gets severely unbalanced voltage under unbalanced loads. Fundamental positive and negative sequences are transformed by two coordinates transformation which are rotated in each opposite direction, respectively. Each fundamental d-q voltage is regulated by each fundamental PI control. In addition, low-order harmonics are compensated through resonant controllers. Performance of stand-alone microgrid is tested for feasibility, and it is verified that output voltage of THD is improved to 1% from 2.2% under 50 kW balanced load, and is improved to 1.1% from 2.6% under 50 kW unbalanced load.
In this paper, a coordinated state-of-charge (SOC) control strategy for the energy storage system (ESS) operating under microgrid islanded mode to stabilize the frequency and voltage was proposed. The proposed SOC control loop is made up of PI controller, which uses a SOC state of the energy storage system as an input and an auxiliary reference value of secondary control as an output. The SOC controller changes the auxiliary reference value of secondary control to charge or discharge the ESS. To verify the proposed control strategy, PSCAD/EMTDC simulation study was performed. The simulation results show that the SOC of the ESS can be regulated at the desired operating range without degrading the stabilizing control performance by proposed coordinated SOC control method.

Voltage stabilization is an essential component of power quality in low voltage DC (LVDC) microgrid. The microgrid demands the interconnection of a number of small distributed power resources, including variable renewable generators. Therefore, the voltage can be maintained in a stable manner through the control of these distributed generators. In this study, we did research on the new advanced operating method for a photovoltaic (PV) simulator in order to achieve interconnection to a bipolar LVDC microgrid. The validity of this voltage stabilization method, using the distributed generators, is experimentally verified. The test LVDC microgrid is configured by connecting the developed PV simulator and DC load, DC line, and AC/DC rectifier for connecting the main AC grid. The new advanced control method is applied to the developed PV simulator for the bipolar LVDC grid in order to stabilize the gird voltage. Using simulation results, the stabilization of the grid voltage by PV simulator using the proposed control method is confirmed the through the simulation results in various operation scenarios.
Parallel distributed generators (DGs) in the islanded micro-grid are normally controlled with the aid of the droop control scheme. However, the traditional droop control methods which use the P-${\omega}$ and Q-E curve to share power between DGs are still concerned to improve the accurate of reactive power sharing and variation of frequency and voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). This paper proposes a control scheme to solve the limitation of microgrid in islanded operation such as reactive power sharing accuracy and PCC voltage and frequency restoring. In order to achieve the control objective, a secondary control is implemented with both central controller and local controller by using the low bandwidth communications. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is analyzed through the simulation.

Due to enhanced demands on quality, security and reliability of the electric power energy system, a microgrid has become a subject of special interest. In this paper, output characteristics of energy storage system (ESS) with an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) and battery energy storage system (BESS) of a renewable energy based microgrid were analyzed under grid-connected and islanded operation modes. The microgrid which consists of photovoltaic and wind power turbine generators, diesel generator, ESS with an EDLC, BESS and loads was modeled using real time digital simulator. The results present the effective control patterns of the microgrid system.
Distribution management system or microgrid energy management system plays an important role in monitoring, operation and control of electrical distribution systems by utilizing IT infrastructure. Nowadays, the rapid increase of the distributed resources makes the conventional management system have some additional functionality for the reliable operation due to intermittent renewables and the efficient operation on the economical purpose. In this paper, the brief standard software functional requirements of microgrid energy management system are provided through survey of the recent commercial products of the major vendors, and furthermore the architectures of microgrid energy management system are provided in comparison with major suppliers' microgrid energy management system. The summary of investigation will be able to make the developers and researchers focus on the specific functionality in the real world.
Line-interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are good candidates for providing energy storage within a microgrid. In this paper, a control scheme for a line-interactive UPS system applied in a low-voltage microgrid is presented. It is based on the Q-w and P-E droop control to achieve a seamless transition between grid-connected and stand-alone operation modes. Moreover, a new model for designing the controllers is built in the dq-frame based on the instantaneous power definition. The new-built model takes into account the dynamic performance of the output impedance of the inverter in the dq-frame and can be evaluated in the time domain. Compared to the traditional model based on the instantaneous power definition, the new-built model is more accurate to describe the dynamic performance of the system. Simulation and experimental results obtained with a microgrid consisting of two 40-kW line-interactive UPS systems are given to validate the control strategy of the line-active UPS system and the accuracy of the new-built model.

This paper describes the autonomous operation analysis of DC microgrid based on droop control. In order to verify the whole system operation, detailed simulation models for wind power generation, solar power generation, and battery were developed with user-defined models programmed with C-code in PSCAD/ EMTDC software. The simulation results confirm that the DC microgrid with droop control make it feasible to provide power to the load with stable manner. Based on simulation results a prototype of DC microgrid was built and tested in the lab to verify the autonomous operation experimentally. The droop control scheme can suppress the circulating current, and offers each unit to be controlled autonomously without any communication link.
