  • Many kinds of microcontrollers such as 8051, PIC16 and Atmega series are used for the automatic control system, home appliances and communication equipments manufacturing. It is very important to understand the basic operational principles of microcontrollers and their design concepts. There are many kinds of educational microcontroller trainers and also they are designed and assembled very complicatedly. For the students or developers, it is very difficult to catch the basic operation schemes and apply the techniques to the control system. And also it requires much cost and time for the various kinds of trainers purchasing. In this paper, standardization of pins layout and peripheral modules for the general microcontroller usage was introduced and tested with 89C2051, 89C51, PIC16F84, PIC16F877, Atmega8535 and Atmega128, etc. As a result of test, it was found that saving the cost and time using this suggested device was possible. And also it was very effective way to understand microcontroller design and programming techniques.

  • A microcontroller-based DC motor control system for a total artificial heart(TAH) was developed. Using a one-chip microcontroller, 87Cl96KB, the design of digital motor speed control system and servo control system is demonstrated. Functionally, the control system consists of a position control unit, a speed control unit, and a communication unit. The performance and the reliability of the developed control system were assessed through a series of mock circulation system experiments.

  • A single phase induction motor is predominant in fractional horsepower rating and is widely used in home and industrial equipment. For example, these motors provide the motive power to washing machines, fans, refrigerators, etc. In this paper has presented the design and implementation of a microcontroller software - based self - starting SPIM. The control algorithm used in the experimentation employed simple control strategies which enabled a single chip programmable microcontroller to execute both the self - starting and self - detecting control of SPIM with relatively simplified hardware.

  • 일반적으로 휴대폰에는 리튬이온(Ll-lon) 전지(battery)를 많이 사용하고 있으며 그 전지(battery)를 충전시키기 위해 Microcontroller를 사용해서 과충전과 방전, 그리고 전지(battery) 보호와 충전에 대한 일정한 전류를 제어한다. 여기에서 충전 동작 시 필요한 일반직인 충전 전류 제어를 PWM의 방식에 의존하지 않고 인공지능 기법을 이용해 소프트웨어적으로 처리가 필요한 파라메터 값을 추정해 적용시키고자 한다. 따라서 개발한 충전시스템에 일반적인 충전 파라메터를 전압과 전류 그리고 시간으로 분류하여 Microcontroller에 그 파라메터를 적용시켜 PWM 방식으로 제어한 후에 실험에 의한 결과값을 얻는다. 그리고 이것들을 비교하여 보다 나은 충전시스템을 구현하기 위해 인공지능 기법 중에 하나인 신경망을 이용하여 전압과 전류 그리고 시간에 대한 파라메터를 처리하였다. 본 논문에서 신경망에 대한 파라메터의 학습을 일반 FC에서 구현하고 여기에서 추출된 학습 값을 Microcontroller에 적용시켜 입력값에 따라 다양한 PWM 신호를 발생시키도록 구현했다. 이후 실제적인 실험에 의한 결과값을 본 논문에서 서술하였다.

Microcontroller-Based Improved Predictive Current Controlled VSI for Single-Phase Grid-Connected Systems

  • Predictive current control offers the potential for achieving more precise current control with a minimum of distortion and harmonic noise. However, the predictive method is difficult to implement and has a greater computational burden. This paper introduces a theoretical analysis and experimental verification for an improved predictive current control technique applied to single phase grid connected voltage source inverters (VSI). The proposed technique has simple calculations. An ATmega1280 microcontroller board is used to implement the proposed technique for a simpler and cheaper control system. To enhance the current performance and to obtain a minimum of current THD, an improved tri-level PWM switching strategy is proposed. The proposed switching strategy uses six operation modes instead of four as in the traditional strategy. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the system performance with the improved switching strategy and its effect on current performance. The presented experimental results verify that the proposed technique can be implemented using fixed point 8-bit microcontroller to obtain excellent results.

  • This work describes a design and implementation of the level & flow rate control system by using a single-chip microcontroller. The proposed model system is designed based on the use of the single-chip microcontroller 8031 with the EPROM emulator for programming the computer software. The microcontroller reaches the input level and flow signals from the level sensor and the turbine flowmeter, respectively, via the signal conditioning circuits and A/D converters in order to calculate the control signal.   • Flowmeter and oxygen sensors are listed in COVID-19 essential medical devices. This article reports a Teensy microcontroller-based Oxygen mass flow controller (MFC), core part of the oxygen respirator or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The developed MFC consisting of the microcontroller, MEMS flow sensor, and solenoid valve was able to accurately control 0 to 100 sccm of oxygen flow rate. The pressure of vacuum chamber increased proportionally to the flow rate (0.998 of Pearson correlation coefficient). The experimental results proved that the developed MFC exhibits comparable performance to a commercial MFC in accuracy, settling time, linearity with pressure, and repeatability of oxygen mass flow control. It is expected that this simple and cheap MFC is utilized for oxygen therapy against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

  • In this paper, we first define a total of 64 instructions that are considered to be essential and frequently used, construct a datapath diagram, determine the control sequence using a finite state machine, and implement an 8-bit microcontroller using FPGA in VHDL. In the past, only functional simulation results of a rudimentary microcontroller were reported, the microcontroller lacked interrupt handling capability, or it was not implemented in hardware. We have designed a self-contained 8-bit microcontroller such that it can perform data transfer, addition, and logical operations, as well as stack and external interrupt operations. Following timing simulation of the designed microcontroller, we implemented it in an FPGA and verified its operation successfully. The design and implementation has been done under the Altera MAX+PLUS II integrated development environment using the EP1K50TC144-3 chip. The maximum operating frequency, the total number of logic elements used, and the logic utilization were found to be 9.39 MHz, 2813, and 97%, respectively. The result can be used as a microcontroller IP, and as needs arise, the VHDL code can be modified accordingly.

  • This paper is concerned with the implementation of auto-tuning positive position feedback controller using a digital signal processor and microcontroller. The main advantage of the positive position feedback controller is that it can control a natural mode of interest by tuning the filter frequency of the positive position feedback controller to the natural frequency of the target mode. However, the positive position feedback controller loses its advantage when mistuned. In this paper, the fast fourier transform algorithm is implemented on the microcontroller whereas the positive position feedback controller is implemented on the digital signal processor. After calculating the frequency which affects the vibrations of structure most, the result is transferred to the digital signal processor. The digital signal processor updates the information on the frequency to be controlled so that it can cope with both internal and external changes. The proposed scheme was installed and tested using a beam equipped with piezoceramic sensor and actuator. The experimental results show that the auto-tuning positive position feedback controller proposed in this paper can suppress vibrations even when the target structure undergoes structural change thus validating the approach.
