  • Using one chip microcontroller 87Cl96 (On chip EPROM type) and EPLD (Erasable & Programable Logic Device), an implantable control system to drive pendulum type electromechanical total artificial heart was developed. This control system consists of 4 parts, main management system, motor driver with power regulator, state monitoring system and communication part. The main system has the functions for speed detection, PI(proportional and integration) control, PWM generation, communication and analog data processor. Two kinds of power system were used and separated by 8 photo coupler arrays to improve the system stability. The performances of each compartments were compared with our previous z80 microprocessor based control system and good correspondences was shown. Logic power consumption was reduced to a one third of our previous controller. Using mock circulation tests, the overall performances of control system are evaluated.

MHP: Master-Handoff Protocol for Fast and Energy-Efficient Data Transfer over SPI in Wireless Sensing Systems

  • Serial peripheral interface (SPI) has been identified as a bottleneck in many wireless sensing systems today. SPI is used almost universally as the physical connection between the microcontroller unit (MCU) and radios, storage devices, and many types of sensors. Virtually all wireless sensor nodes today perform up to twice as many bus transactions as necessary to transfer a given piece of data, as an MCU must serve as the bus master in all transactions. To eliminate this bottleneck, we propose the master-handoff protocol. After the MCU initiates reading from the source slave device and writing to the sink slave device, the MCU as a master becomes a slave, and either the source or the sink slave becomes the temporary master. Experiment results show that this master-handoff technique not only cuts the data transfer time in half, but, more importantly, also enables a superlinear energy reduction.

  • There are always some errors in force sensing of multi-axis force sensors that aggravate sensor performance. Error sources may be classified mainly in two groups. One is structural error due to inaccuracy of sensor body, and the other is error due to noise signals existing in the sensed information. This paper presents a brief review about the principle of multi-axis force sensors, and then a method that can reduce the effect of noise signals. The method is to read digital signals in computer instead of analog voltage signals. We can eliminate the bad effect of electromagnetic waves emitted from computer and of 60 Hz noise emitted from AC source by the proposed method. The proposed method is investigated through experimental demonstration. The experimental results show the proposed method improves the sensor performance significantly.

An efficient LIN MCU design for In-Vehicle Networks

  • This paper describes a design of LIN MCU using efficient memory accessing architecture which provides concurrent data and address fetch for faster communication. By using slew rate control it can reduce EMI emission while satisfying required communication specifications. To verify the efficiency of the LIN MCU, we developed a SoC and tested for several data packets. Measurements show that this LIN MCU improves network efficiency up to 17.19 % and response time up to 31.26 % for nominal cases. EMI radiation also can be reduced up to 10 dB.

  • A coaxial rotor flying robot is developed for surveying and reconnoitering various circumstances under calamity environment. The robot has two contrarotating rotors on a common axis, an embedded microcontroller, an IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit), an IR sensor for height control, a micro camera for surveillance, ultrasonic position sensors and wireless communication devices. A bell-bar mounted on the top of the upper rotor hub increases stability and improves flight performance. In this paper, we present a dynamic model of a coaxial rotor flying robot and design an embedded controller far the robot, and implement them to control the developed flying robot. Experimental results show that the proposed controller is valid for autonomous hovering and position control.

  • We presetn sytem-level simulation methodology as well as environment setup established for CDMA digtial cellular mobile station in an effort to verify CDMA modem ASIC design. To make the system-level simulation feasible, behavioral modeling of a microcontroller was first carried out with VHDL. In addition, models written in C language were also developed to provide ASIC with realistic input data. Finally, the netlist of CDMA modem ASIC was loaded on the a hardware accelerator, which was interfaced with VHDL simulator, and ismulation was performed by excuting the actual CDMA call processing software. Simulation resutls thus obtained were confirmed by comparing them with the emulation resutls from the actual system constructed on hardware modeler. these methods were proved to be effective in both discovering in advance malfunctions when embedded in the system or design errors of ASIC and reducing simulation time by a factor of as much as 20 in case of simulation at gate-level.

  • A maximum power point tracking(MPPT) converter, to enhance the converter efficiency is evaluated within the laboratory. The converter is controlled to track the maximum power point of the input photovoltaic(PV) source by varying the input and output parameter-conditions of irradiation, temperature, etc. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new maximum power point tracking(MPPT) using neural controller. Neural controller are applied to control of MPPT by boosting converter duty ratios compensation effect with 8 bit single chip 8051 microcontroller.

  • In this paper, a PV multi-string PCS with a grid-connection is proposed. An improved MPPT algorithm for the PV multi-string PCS is suggested. Each PV string has its own MPP tracker and the proposed MPPT algorithm prevents LMPP tracking due to power ripple. In the PV PCS with single-phase inverter has a large current ripple at twice the grid frequency. The current ripple reduction algorithm without external component is suggested. Also, this paper proposes a simple control method to achieve sharing of the PV string voltage and current among the interleaved parallel boost converters. All algorithms and controllers are implemented on a single-chip microcontroller. Experimental results obtained on a 3kW prototype show high performance of the proposed PV multi-string PCS.
