The Effect of Microcomputer-based Laboratory Teaching on Elementary School Students (초등학교 학생의 컴퓨터 기반 실험 수업 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) teaching on 6th graders in Korean elementary schools. Three classes from elementary school were respectively assigned to an experimental group consisting of one class (38 students) and a control group of two classes (78 students). For the experimental group, science instruction employed MBL. For the control group, traditional instruction was used. The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, the MBL was effective in the improvement of scientific inquiry skills. Secondly, there was no significant difference in respect to the results from the achievement test between the experimental group and the control group.

  • In this study a microcomputer-aided design program has been developed to design and analysis for the digital adaptive control system. DACS(Digital Adaptive Control System) program has been written in GWBASIC language which is suitable for IBM-PC compatible. The dynamics of each element was modulized and described by linear difference equations. By the aid of this program, sampling time, the number of bits of A/D and D/A converter and the stability for the digital adaptive control system can be determined. In order to estimate the system parameters an on-line identification and a regression analysis method are utilized. The simulation results have been well agreed with the experiments. To demonstrate the utility of this program, an adaptive control system has been designed for air-heating system.

  • Recently microcomputers have come into wide use in the field of control. They are used not only as monitors and or controllers in various plant control systems but also for Computer Aided Design of control systems. In this paper, authors propose a method to design the reduced order observers for the higher order systems and have digital simulation of time responses of the optimal state feedback control system using the maximum principle. And the real time optimal state feedback control system for the third order plant which is realized by an anolog computer is constructed by means of a microcomputer, A/D converter and D/A converter. Time responses of the real time control system are compared with those obtained by the digital simulation and their well coincedence is confirmed.

  • In the microcomputer-based velocity control for an electro-hydraulic servo system, the effects of control methods and control hardware on the performance of the system were investigated. Experiments were carried out with PID and deadbeat controllers using 8 or 16 bit microprocessor and 8 or 12 bit A/D and D/A converters. It is found that the transient response of the system is better with PID controller than with deadbeat controller. When the number of bits of the microprocessor and converters are small, it is also found that amplitude quantization due to limited wordlength gives significant effects on transient responses of the system. Analytically predicted step-responses are in good agreement with experimental ones.

  • This paper describes a design of hardware system for real time automatic diagnosis of ECG arrhythmia based on pipeline processor consisting of three microcomputer. ECG data is acquisited by 12 bit A/D converter with hardware QRS triggered detector. Four diagnostic parameters-heart rate, morpholigy, axis, and ST segment-are used for the classification and the diagnosis of arrhythmia. The functions of the main CPU were distributed and processed with three microcomputers. Therefore the effective data process and the real time process using microcomputer can be obtained. The interconnection structure consisting of two common memory unit is designed to decrease the delay time caused by data transfer between processors and be which the delay time can be taken 1% of one clock period.

  • The new controller developed here, which is the facility with only one measurement, is a new concept for the level controller of the existing nuclear steam generator. A MACS (Microcomputer-based Adaptive Control System of a Steam Generator) is quite practical and efficient, and has also simple structure and higher flexibility in the installment for actual plant. A key ingredient of this system is adaptive regulator which can calculate adaptive, optimal valve position in response to changes in the dynamics of the process and the disturbances. In spite of many difficulties in the steam generator water level control at low power, it can be concluded from the experimental and simulation results, that the MACS can provide optimal, robust steam generator level control from zero to full power. The amount of the control input effort can be reduced by adjusting the weighting factor. However, the steady state water level errors are generated. To avoid the steady errors, the different adaptive algorithm should be investigated in the future. The 3 second sampling time is acceptable for this system. However, action should be taken to shorten the sampling time for better digital control.

  • A microcomputer based automatic insulin del ivory system was designed to control the speed of the Infusion pump depending upon the required amount of insulin at one minute interval for 24 hours. The desired insulin pattern for a diabetic patient was computed by computer programs based on a mathematical model of the insulin transport where the transport parameters were obtained using a linear regression analysis of the measured changes of insulin concentration in normal subjects.

  • The image processing system consisted of the microcomputer IBM PC-XT and the graphic board (16 gray level and $640{\times}400$ pixels resolution) has been proposed, and the image processing softwares programmed in the BASIC and in the assembler language have been developed. The programs are consisted of the main menu and the sub menu, that have contained the subroutine for the capture for image data, the determination of region, the histogram, the change of value, the montage, the skeleton, the mask, the moving, the zoom, the disk access and the print. For the application, the photoelastic fringe data have been captured and analyzed. It was seen that the programs are available for the image processing.

  • An Aero-NFT nutriculture system using microcomputer for cultivation of greenhouse melon was developed and the performance of the system was evaluated through experiments. The system could control temperature, EC and pH of the nutrient solution within the error ranges of $\pm$ 0.2$^{\circ}C$, $\pm$ 0.2 mS/cm, $\pm$ 0.1 pH, respectively. The results of cultivation experiment showed that temperature, EC and pH of the nutrient solution were generally controlled within the setting ranges during cultivation period. The growth results were good until pinching, but the fruit quality of melons was not high except sweetness and shape. To optimize performance of the system, more techlical information for nutriculture of greenhouse melon was needed.

  • The measurement system of the pressure in engine cylinder is developed with the aids of the microcomputer, A/D converter and simple electrical circuits. The experiment is performed in 4 cycle single cylinder Gasoline engine. When data for the pressure progress is sampled, clock signal or signal from the crank angle is used as trigger. The variation of the pressure during the cycles can be well obtained experimentally. So, the informations which are necessary in the combustion analysis, i.e. expansion pressure, indicated mean effective pressure, the magnitude and time of the maximum pressure ignition time, the rate of pressure rise and heat release and combustion rates can be obtained by the calculation using experimental data. Also, the informations about the after-burning process, the existence of the detonation waves and end time of combustion can be investigated from this study.
