  • For the case of high head and critical low flow rate range of micro hydropower resources, it requires very low specific speed turbines which are lower than conventional impulse turbine's specific speed. In order to satisfy the request for very low specific speed turbine with high efficiency, a new positive displacement turbine is developed. The performance characteristics of the new turbine is tested and compared with a conventional impulse turbine, which is used for automatic water faucet system. The purpose of present study is to develop an high performance turbine that can be used to extract micro hydropower potential of a water supply system. The test results show that the positive displacement turbine is much more efficient than the conventional turbine and it can sustain high efficiency under the wide range of operating conditions. The pressure pulsations at the inlet and outlet of the positive displacement turbine can be considerably minimized by using simple pressure damper.

  • A new method for measuring the performance of a micro-thruster is suggested in this paper. A few thrust stands have been developed for measuring micro-level thrusts. This paper describes a different measurement method that can minimize the calibration involved in the measurements, while providing the capability of directly measuring the produced minimum impulse bit directly. The underlying theory and the theoretical background for the measurement mechanism are described here. The theory and method is verified using a computer simulation, and the result is given in this paper. The theory has also been tested on an actual hardware. Although this hardware is a prototype, developed for proof-of-concept analysis, satisfactory results have been obtained.

  • This paper describes the effect of lightning impulse current on ZnO varistors(390 V, 6.5 kA) used in low-voltage AC mains as a protective device against transient overvoltages. A lightning impulse current standardized in IEC 61000-4-5 is applied to the varistors, and the energy applied to the varistor at each time is about 12 J. In the experiment, various Parameters such as leakage current, reference voltage are measured with the number of applied impulse current. Also, micro-structure changes of the varistors after applying the lightning impulse current of 200 times are compared. The electrical characteristics of the varistors are degraded by overtime impulse current, showing increase in leakage current and decrease in reference voltage.

  • Multiple-lightning impulse currents are a general feature of the lightning ground f=flash. It is therefore necessary for lightning arresters used in power systems to be estimated by applying not only a single-lightning impulse current but also a multiple-lightning impulse currents. This paper presents the effects of multiple-lightning impulse currents on deterioration of ZnO arrester blocks. The multiple-lightning impulse generator which can produce quadruple 8/20$[\mus]$ 5[kA] with separation time of 30~120[ms] is designed and fabricated. The total energy applied to the arrester block at each impulse is about 1,200[J]. In experiment, various parameters such as leakage current component, reference voltage, and temperature are measured with the number of applied impulse current. Also, micro-structure changes of the ZnO blocks after applying the single and the multiple-lightning impulse currents of 200 times are compared. The experimental results indicate that the types of arrester blocks are more vulnerable to deterioration or damage by multiple-lightning impulse currents.

  • This paper deals with the change of the micro-structure of ZnO associated with lightning surge current and ageing test. In this work, a surge current generator which can produce 8/20 [${\mu}s$], 6 [kA] impulse current is designed and fabricated to simulate the lightning impulse current. The residual voltage and leakage current flowing to ZnO blocks are observed. Also a compensation circuit was used in resistive current measurement. The micro-structures of ZnO arrester block were significantly changed by lightning surge current and accelerated temperature ageing test.

  • This paper presents the effect of lightning impulse current on ZnO varistors(390[V], 6.5[kA]) used in low-voltage AC mains as a protective device against transient overvoltages. The electrical characteristics of ZnO varistors are deteriorated by overtime impulse current, and a deteriorated ZnO varistor is brought to a thermal runaway and finally destroyed even in normal operating voltage. Therefore, it is important to estimate the changes of the electrical characteristics of ZnO varistors. A lightning impulse current standardized in IEC 61000-4-5 is applied to the varistors to accelerate deterioration, and the energy applied to the varistor at each time is about 12 [J].

  • In this paper, a method of designing the efficient batch blind equalization with low complexity using a micro genetic algorithm (GA), is presented. In general, the blind equalization techniques that are focused on the complexity reduction might be carried out with minor effect on the performance. Among the advanced various subjects in the field of GAs, a micro genetic algorithm is employed to identity the unknown channel impulse response in order to reduce the search space effectively. A new cost function with respect to the constant modulus criterion is suggested considering its relation to the Wiener criterion. We provide simulation results to show the superiority of the proposed techniques compared to other existing techniques.

  • Crystallographic phases of Plasma electrolytic oxidized Al alloy, A1100, A5052, A6061, A6063, A7075, were investigated. Two types of electrolyte $Na_2Si_2O_3$ and Na2P2O7 were also compared. Bipolar pulse, $2000{\mu}sec$ with $400{\mu}sec+420V$ impulse and $300{\mu}sec$ - impulse were applied for 20 min. ${\alpha}-alumina$, ${\gamma}-alumina$, ${\eta}-alumina$, $Al_{4.95}Si_{1.05}O_{9.52}$, and $(Al_{0.9}Cr_{0.1})_2O_3$ were mainly observed. Si, component of electrolyte, were moved into the PEO layer by bipolar pulse. Glassy phase was also observed at the surface of $Na_2Si_2O_3$ electrolyte treated PEO layer, and increased with the Mg content of Al alloy. It is concluded that at first glassy phase was formed by the micro plasma, and the high temperature of plasma turns glassy phase to several crystalline phases. And we could expect that many other crystalline phase could be formed by PEO process.
