The droplet impact and merging process on a flat substrate with contact angle hysteresis is numerically studied. The droplet deformation is determined by an improved level-set method employing a sharp-interface technique for the stress condition at the liquid-gas interface and the contact angle condition at the liquid-gas-solid interline. Based on the computations, the droplet impact and merging pattern is investigated to find the optimal condition in manufacturing a micro-line. The effects of dynamic contact angles and droplet spacing on droplet motion are quantified.
Flow visualization of a droplet passing through a straight channel and a diverging channel has been carried out using micro-PIV. Diverging channel is frequently used in lab-on-a-chip and microfluidic devices, where flow pattern inside the droplet passing is quite different from that through a straight channel. In the present study, we visualized the droplet flow in three different regions. The first region is where the droplet has a wide contact area with the channel wall, the second region is characterized with a narrow contact area and the third region is where droplet is detached from the channel wall. Visualization results show that the internal flow inside the droplet passing through the straight channel moves in the opposite direction to the droplet velocity in the near wall exhibiting complex flow patterns. But in the diverging channel the internal flow inside the droplet moves in the same direction as the droplet velocity due to the shear induced by oil phase flow exhibiting rather simple flow pattern.
We developed inkjet based measurement system for micro-droplet behavior on a substrate. By using the inkjet dispenser, a droplet, which is as small as few pico-liter in volume, can be jetted and the amount can be controlled. After jetting, the droplet image on the substrate is acquired from side view camera. Then, droplet profile is extracted to measure droplet volume, contact angle and evaporation characteristics. Also top view image of the droplet is acquired for better understanding of droplet shape. The previous contact angle measurement method has limitations since it mainly measures the ratio of height and contact diameter of droplet on a substrate. Unlike previous measurement system, our proposed method has advantages because various behavior of droplet on substrate can be effectively analyzed by extracting the droplet profile.
The recent industrial application requires technical methods to get the cutting fluid droplet surfaces in particular from the viewpoint of topography and micro texture. To characterize the surface topography of droplet, the combination of the confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and wavelet filtering is well suited for obtaining the droplet geometry encountered in tribological research. This technique indicates a better agreement in obtaining an appropriate droplet surface obtained by the CLSM over a detail range of surface accuracy (resolution: $2{\mu}m$). And the results allow an excellent accuracy in a measurement of a droplet surface. The combination of extended focal depth measurement configured and multi-scale wavelet filtering has proven that it can construct a droplet surface in a successive and accurate way. A multi-scale approach of wavelet filtering was developed based on the decomposition and reconstruction of droplet surface by 2D wavelet transform using db9 (a mother wavelet of daubechies). Also this technique can be extended to characterize the quantification of droplet properties and other field in a wide range of scales. Finally this method is verified to be a better droplet surface modeling in a micro scale arising in a mist machining.
One of the fascinating prospects is the possibility of new hydrodynamics technology on micro-scale system since oscillations of micro-droplets are of practical and scientific importance. It has been widely conceived that the lowest oscillation mode of a pendant droplet is the longitudinal vibration, i.e. periodic elongation and contraction along the longitudinal direction. Nonlinear and forced oscillations of supported viscous droplet were focused in the present study. The droplet has a free contact line with solid plate and inviscid fluid. Natural frequencies of a pendant droplet have been investigated experimentally by imposing the acoustic wave while the frequency is being increased at a fixed amplitude. It is found that a pendant droplet shows the resonant behaviors at each mode similar to the theoretical analysis. The rotation of the droplet about the longitudinal axis is the oscillation mode of the lowest resonance frequency. This rotational mode can be invoked by periodic acoustic forcing and is analogous to the pendulum rotation. It is also found that the natural frequency of a pendant droplet is independent of the drop density and surface tension but inversely proportional to the square root of the droplet size.

In order to study the characteristics of cloud, a real-scale experiment for cloud generation was carried out using an extinct vertical mine (430 m height) located in the northeastern Honshu, Japan. The dry particles generated from the three-step concentrations of NaCl solutions were used for cloud generation. The number size distributions of initial dry particles and cloud droplets were monitored by Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP) at bottom and upper sites of pit, respectively. The polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) method was employed to measure liquid water content ($W_L$) as a function of droplet size. Moreover the chemical properties of individual droplet replicas were determined by micro-PIXE. The CCN number concentration shows the lognormal form in dependence of the particle size, while the number size distributions of droplets are bimodal showing the peaks around $9{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$ for every case. In comparison to background mineral particles, right shifting of size distribution line for NaCl particles was occurred. When NaCl solutions with three-step different concentrations were neulized, $W_L$ shows the strong droplet size dependence. It varied from $10.0mg\;m^{-3}$ up to $13.6mg\;m^{-3}$ with average $11.6mg\;m^{-3}$. A good relationship between $W_L$ and cloud droplet number concentration was obtained. Both chemical inhomogeneities (mixed components with mineral and C1) and homogeneities (only mineral components or C1) in individual droplet replicas were obviously observed from micro-PIXE elemental images.
Recently, researches for droplet impact phenomena have been faced a new phase in the direction of studying the effect of complex external conditions (e.g. wettability, temperature, morphology, electric field, etc.) for depth understanding and precise controlling in various applications. Hence, here we investigated the electrified droplet impact phenomena, because there were few quantitative researches for electrified droplet impact when we considering many real applications such as electrospray, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jet printing. To observe interaction effect of surface charge between substrate and droplet simultaneously, micro-droplets with various Reynolds number (Re) and Weber number (We) were dripped on super-hydrophobic surface with existence and nonexistence of electrical surface charge. It shows three kinds of impact behaviors, fully bouncing, partial bouncing, and splashing with different We. Also, charged droplet bounced higher on electrically charged surface than on non-charged surface. Additionally, transition regions of three impact behaviors were classified quantitatively with water hammer pressure value, which means instant pressure inside droplet at the impact moment.

Droplet impinging into a cavity at micro-scale is one of important fluidic issues for microfabrications, e.g. bio-chip applications and inkjet deposition processes in the PLED panel manufacturing. The droplets generally dispensing from an inkjet head, which contains an array of nozzles, have a volume in several picoliters, while each nozzle jets the droplets into cavities with micron-meter size located on substrates. Due to measurement difficulties at micro-scale, the numerical simulation could serve as an efficient and preliminary way to evaluate the micro-sized droplet impinging behavior into a cavity. The micro-fluidic flow is computed by solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations through a finite volume discretization. The droplet front is predicted by a volume-of-fluid approach, in which the surface tension is modeled as a function of the fluid concentration. This paper discusses the influence of fluid properties, such as surface tension and fluid viscosity, on micro-fluidic characteristics at different jetting speeds in the deposition process via the proposed numerical approach.
Recently micro-nano structures has widely been reported to improve the performance of waterproof, heat isolation, sound and light absorption in various fields of electric devices such as mobiles, battery, display and solar panels. A lot of micro-sized holes on the surface of thin film provide excellent sound, or heat, or light transmission efficiency more than solid film and simultaneously nano-sized protrusions around micro hole increase the hydrophobicity of the surface of thin film because of lotus leaf effects as generally known previously. In this paper new rapid fabrication process with 355 nm UV laser ablation was proposed to get micro-nano structures on the surface of thin film, which have only been observed at higher laser fluence. Developed thin micro-nano structured film was also investigated the hydrophobic property by measuring the contact angle and demonstrated the possibility to apply to water droplet separation.
This experiment has been carried out to measure the process of droplet formation between water phase fluid$(PVA\;3\%)$ and organic phase fluid(oil), Internal and External flow fields measured by a Dynamic Micro-PIV method Water-in-oil(W/O) droplets successfully generated at a cross junction and Y junction. Internal and external flow fields were measured when the droplet grew up, stretched and separated.
