  • The porous pellets were prepared from porphyry by slurry foaming method. The effect of sintering temperatures on pore structure of porous porphyry pellets with different extension ratio ($E_R$) was investigated by specific surface area, water absorption and porosity, which changed with sintering temperatures. When the sintering temperatures increased from $975^{\circ}C$ to $1075^{\circ}C$, specific surface area and water absorption of the all samples decreased. In case of the sample with an equal sintering temperature, $E_R=3.0$ pellets had little influence on pore structure compared to the $E_R=2.0$ pellets. As a results, it was shown by SEM that facilitated formation of micro pores at $E_R=2.0$ pellets shrunk increasingly after sintering process. At $E_R=3.0$ and sintering temperature at $1025^{\circ}C$, optimum conditions of the porous porphyry porous pellets was found. Also, Escherichia coli removal efficiency of the silver-containing porphoyry porous pellets was measured for the feasibility as a antibacterial media. The antibacterial activity of prepared silver-containing sample was maintained above 90% for 40 days.

  • Experimental work was carried out in order to produce a novel grade of ink-jet paper that has both high print-out quality and price competitiveness. Usually, silica and PVOH has been used for ink-jet paper to design the coating layer that has a hydrophilic and micro-porous structure. However, poor rheological characteristics and low productivity of the silica-PVOH system make the price of the ink-jet paper high. The main focus of this study was replacing the conventional silica (coating pigment) PVOH (binder) coating system with the new PCC (coating pigment) cationic starch (binder) coating system, and optimizing thecoating technology associated with PPC-cationic starch system. In this study, ink-jet print quality of PCC-coated papers was compared with that of silica-coated paper. Two types of PCC were used: conventional type and colloid type. It turned out that PCC C, a conventional coating pigment, has not given a desirable result: it showed high dot reproduction, but it gave low optical density. In spite of low dot reproduction, the qualities of PCC A were comparable or superior to those of silica in optical density, color reproduction, and the uniformity of printing surface. It was also shown that the problems that are happened when the dosage level of cationic starch was too low were varied with ink-type used in each printer. However, in the case of low binder level, the produced image was widely spread resulting fromtoo low optical density of images, or from the lack of bonding ability to set ink into coating surface.

  • The Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) of fuel cell, are required to provide both delivery of reactant gases to the catalyst layer and removal of water in either vapor or liquid form in typical PEMFCs. In this study, the fabrication of GDL containing Micro Porous Layer (MPL) made of the slurry of PVDF mixed with carbon black is investigated in detail. Physical properties of GDL containing MPL, such as electrical resistance, gas permeability and microstructure were examined, and the performance of the cell using developed GDL with MPL was evaluated. The results show that MPL with PVDF binder demonstrated uniformly distributed microstructure without large cracks and pores, which resulted in better electrical conductivity. The fuel cell performance test demonstrates that the developed GDL with MPL has a great potential due to enhanced mass transport property due to its porous structure and small pore size.

  • Commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) and Ti alloys (typically Ti-6Al-4V) display excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Although the chemical composition and topography are considered important, the mechanical properties of the material and the loading conditions in the host have, conventionally. Ti and its alloys are not bioactive. Therefore, they do not chemically bond to the bone, whereas they physically bond with bone tissue. The electrochemical deposition process provides an effective surface for biocompatibility because large surface area can be served to cell proliferation. Electrochemical deposition method is an attractive technique for the deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAp). However, the adhesions of these coatings to the Ti surface needs to be improved for clinical used. Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) enables control in the chemical com position, porous structure, and thickness of the $TiO_2$ layer on Ti surface. In addition, previous studies h ave concluded that the presence of $Ca^{+2}$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ ion coating on porous $TiO_2$ surface induced adhesion strength between HAp and Ti surface during electrochemical deposition. Silicon (Si) in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in bone formation and immune system regulation, and is also the most abundant trace element in bone. The objective of this work was to study electrochemical characteristcs of Zn and Si coating on Ti-6Al-4V by PEO treatment. The coating process involves two steps: 1) formation of porous $TiO_2$ on Ti-6Al-4V at high potential. A pulsed DC power supply was employed. 2) Electrochemical tests were carried out using potentiodynamic and AC impedance methoeds. The morphology, the chemical composition, and the micro-structure an alysis of the sample were examined using FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. The enhancements of the HAp forming ability arise from $Si/Zn-TiO_2$ surface, which has formed the reduction of the Si/Zn ions. The promising results successfully demonstrate the immense potential of $Si/Zn-TiO_2$ coatings in dental and biomaterials applications.

  • Gas diffusion layer(GDL) in PEMFC performs the discharge of water vapor smoothly. When GDL is revealed to cold environment, the freezing of the water droplet or water net in GDL occurs. The purpose of this work is to observe the cooling and freezing behavior of the water droplet which meets to the microporous surface and air under the various low temperature conditions. GDL was coated with waterproof material, which has three types of coating rate, 0, 40 and 60%. Water droplets in series of sizes on GDL were supercooled, frozen and crystalized orderly by circulating low temperature brine. The process of cooling was investigated with the temperature and the snapshot of the water droplet.

  • Pd-ceramic composite membranes and catalytic membrane reactors(CMR) have been studied for hydrogen and its isotopes (deuterium and tritium) purification and recovery in the fusion reactor fuel cycle. Particularly a closed-loop process has been studied for recovering tritium from tritiated water by means of a CMR in which the water gas shift reaction takes place. The development of the techniques for coating micro-porous ceramic tubes with Pd and Pd/Ag thin layers is described : P composite membranes have been produced by electroless deposition (Pd/Ag film of 10-20 $\mu$m) and rolling of thin metal sheets (Pd and Pd/Ag membranes of 50-70 $\mu$m). Experimental results of the electroless membranes have shown a not complete hydrogen selectivity because of the presence of some defects(micro-holes) in the metallic thin layer. Conversely the rolled thin Pd and Pd/ag membranes have separated hydrogen from the other gases with a complete selectivity giving rise to a slightly larger (about a factor 1.7) mass transfer resistance with respect to the electroless membranes. Experimental tests have confirmed the good performances of the rolled membranes in terms of chemical stability over several weeks of operation. Therefore these rolled membranes and CMR are adequate for applications in the fusion reactor fuel cycle as well as in the industrial processes where high pure hydrogen is required (i.e. hydrocarbon reforming for fuel cell)

  • A study on frost prevention of fin-tube heat exchanger is experimently performed by spreading antifreezing solution on heat exchanger surface. It is desirable that the antifreezing solution spreads completely on the surface forming thin liquid film to prevent frost nucleation and crystal growth and to reduce the thermal resistance across the liquid film. A small amount of antifreezing solution falls in drops on heat exchanger surface using two types of supplying devices, and a porous layer coating technique is adopted to enhance the wettedness of antifreezing solution on the surface. It is observed that the antifreezing solution liquid film prevents fin-tube heat exchanger from frosting, and heat transfer performance does not degrade through the frosting tests. The concentration of supplied antifreezing solution can be determined by heat transfer analysis of the first row of heat exchanger to avoid antifreezing solution freezing due to dilution by moisture absorption.

  • The effect of the addition of a polyvinylchloride (PVC) non-solvent to a PVC-tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution on the surface properties of the PVC thin film was analyzed. The non-solvents used were composed of alcohol-based and non-alcoholic ones. Surface morphologies of PVC thin films according to the addition of the non-solvent were compared. In addition, the hydrophobic properties relying on the surface characteristics were compared. The micro-bubbles generated in the preparation of PVC-THF solution affected the surface morphology of the thin film. In order to implement the normal surface physical properties of the coating thin film at the relatively high concentration of PVC-THF solution, the selection of appropriate drying method was required. When an alcohol-based non-solvent was added, a PVC thin film having a granular porous surface was obtained and exhibited super hydrophobic properties. The volume ratio of the PVC-THF solution to the non-solvent affects the surface shape of the coating thin film. The larger the amount of non-solvent was added, the more advantageous it was to form a super hydrophobic PVC thin film.

  • This paper presents a brief summary on a relatively new plasma aided electrolytic surface treatment process for light metals. A brief discussion regarding the advantages, principle, process parameters and applications of this process is discussed. The process owes its origin to Sluginov who discovered an arc discharge phenomenon in electrolysis in 1880. A similar process was studied and developed by Markov and coworkers in 1970s who successfully deposited an oxide film on aluminium. Several investigation thereafter lead to the establishment of suitable process parameters for deposition of a crystalline oxide film of more than $100{\mu}m$ thickness on the surface of light metals such as aluminium, titanium and magnesium. This process nowadays goes by several names such as plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), micro-arc oxidation (MOA), anodic spark deposition (ASD) etc. Several startups and surface treatment companies have taken up the process and deployed it successfully in a range of products, from military grade rifles to common off road sprockets. However, there are certain limitations to this technology such as the formation of an outer porous oxide layer, especially in case of magnesium which displays a Piling Bedworth ratio of less than one and thus an inherent non protective oxide. This can be treated further but adds to the cost of the process. Overall, it can be said the PEO process offers a better solution than the conventional coating processes. It offers advantages considering the fact that he electrolyte used in PEO process is environmental friendly and the temperature control is not as strict as in case of other surface treatment processes.

  • Sol-gel methods offer many advantages over conventional slip-casting, including the ability to produce ceramic membranes. They are purer, more homogeneous, more reactive and contain a wider variety of compositions. We produced ormosil sol using sol-gel process under various molecular weight of polymer species[polyethylene glycol(PEG)] in total system [Tetraethyl ortho silicate(TEOS)-polyethylene glycol(PEG)]. The properties of as-prepared ormosil sol such as viscosity and gelation time are characterized. Also, the ceramic membrane was prepared by dip-coating with synthetic sol and its microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The permeability and rejection efficiency of membrane for oil/water emulsion were evaluated as crossflow apparatus. The ormosil sol coated membrane was easily formed by steric effect of polymer and it improved flux efficiency because infiltration into porous support decreased. Its flux efficiency was elevated about $200\;l/m^2h$ compared with colloidal sol coated membrane at point of five minutes from starting test.
