  • This study investigated changes of mechanical characteristics of the trabecular and cortical bone in the lumbar vertebrae of the ovariectomised (OVX) rat. In previous researches, there were many studies for morphology of osteoporotic bones based on Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT). However, there were few studies for detecting and tracking changes of mechanical characteristics of the trabecular and cortical bone in the lumbar vertebrae of the OVX rat. For this study, the 4th lumbar of the OVX rat (female Sprague-Dawley) was utilized as a specimen. An OVX rat was scanned at week 0 (just before surgery), at week 4, and week 8 after surgery. Micro-finite element (${\mu}-FE$) analysis was used to investigate mechanical characteristics of the trabecular and cortical bone in the lumbar vertebrae for an OVX rat. When the OVX rat (at week 8) was compared with the OVX rat (at week 0), the structural modulus of cortical and trabecualr bone was decreased by 52% and 99%, respectively. This study showed the change of mechanical characteristics of cortical bone as well as trabecular bone of an OVX rat. Detecting and tracking changes of mechanical characteristics could greatly contribute to an experiment test for the trabecular and cortical bone in the lumbar vertebrae of an OVX rat by using In-vivo Micro-CT.

  • Composite materials, when damaged under thermal or mechanical loadings, show property changes. Among many mechanical properties of composite materials. the stiffness tend to be reduced due to micro-cracking, debonding, or delamination caused by external loadings. This research presents results regarding the detecting technique of internal damages within composite that experienced low-velocity impacts. Post-damage evaluations were made experimentally using flexural and compression loadings. Preliminary finite element analysis was made and compared with analytical solutions. The experimental results to determine the degree of damage will be compared with finite element results.

  • This paper presents the results of thermoelastic wear behaviors in ventilated disk brakes for a high-speed automotive and train using the finite element method. The computed results show that the sinusoidal distortions due to non-uniform distributions of temperature profiles may lead to thermoelastic wears on the rubbing surface. This may decrease the service life of a disk brake and produce micro-cracks, noise and squeals between two rubbing surfaces.

  • This paper describes an optimal design system for multi-disciplinary structural design. An automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation technique, which is based on the fuzzy knowledge processing and computational geometry technique, is incorporated into the system, together with a commercial FE analysis code and a commercial solid modelers. An optimum design solution or satisfactory solutions are then automatically searched using the genetic algorithms modified for real search space, together with the automated FE analysis system. With an aid of genetic algorithms, the present design system allows us to effectively obtain a multi-dimensional solutions. The developed system is successfully applied to the shape design of a micro accelerometer based on a tunnel current concept.

  • The optimum design of power yacht belongs to the nonlinear constrained optimization problems. The determination of scantlings for the bow structure is a very important issue with in the whole structural design process. The derived design results are obtained by the use of real-coded micro-genetic algorithm including evaluation from Lloyd's Register small craft guideline, so that the nominal limiting stress requirement can be satisfied. In this study, the minimum volume design of bow structure on the power yacht was carried out based on the finite element analysis. The target model for optimum design and local structural analysis is the bow structure of a power yacht. The volume of bow structure and the main dimensions of structural members are chosen as an objective function and design variable, respectively. During optimization procedure, finite element analysis was performed to determine the constraint parameters at each iteration step of the optimization loop. optimization results were compared with a pre-existing design and it was possible to reduce approximately 19 percents of the total steel volume of bow structure from the previous design for the power yacht.

  • The mechanical properties of polycrystalline thin-films, critical for Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) components, are known to have the size effect and the scatter in the length scale of microns by the numbers of intensive investigation by experiments and simulations. So, the consideration of the microstructure is essential to cover these length scale effects. The lattice based stochastic model for the microstructure evolution is used to simulate the actual microstructure, and the fast and reliable algorithm is described in this paper. The kinetics parameters, which are the key parameters for the microstructure evolution based on the nucleation and growth mechanism, are extracted from the given micrograph of a polycrystalline material by an inverse method. And the method is verified by the comparison of the quantitative measures, the number of grains and the grain size distribution, for the actual and simulated microstructures. Finite element mesh is then generated on this lattice based microstructure by the developed code. And the statistical finite element analysis is accomplished for selected microstructure.

  • Existence of physical moving parts (ex. check valve) produces several problems (mechanical abrasion, deterioration of reliability, limited temperature performances etc.) in driving pumps. To overcome such problems, we proposed a valveless piezoelectric micro-pump which has new type volume transferring mechanism. The proposed micro-pump has a double faced disk type vibrator that can generate peristaltic motion formed by traveling wave in each surface of a disk. This type of micro-pump is able to apply to a fluid supply system that provides two different kinds of fluid simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a simple and novel design of piezoelectric micro-pump that is peristaltically by piezoelectric actuators and allows the removal of the need for valves of other physically moving parts. The finite elements analysis on the proposed pump model was carried out to verify its operation principle using the commercial analysis software.

  • Purpose: To investigate the relationship between 3D bone architectural parameters and direction-related elastic moduli of cancellous bone of mandibular condyle. Materials and Methods: Two micro-pigs (Micro-$pig^R$, PWG Genetics Korea) were used. Each pig was about 12 months old and weighing around 44 kg. 31 cylindrical bone specimen were obtained from cancellous bone of condyles for 3D analysis and measured by micro-computed tomography. Six parameters were trabecular thickness (Tb. Th), bone specific surface (BS/BV), percent bone volume (BV/TV), structure model index (SMI), degree of anisotropy (DA) and 3-dimensional fractal dimension (3DFD). Elastic moduli of three orthogonal directions (superior-inferior (SI), medial-lateral (ML), andterior-posterior (AP) direction) were calculated through finite element analysis. Results: Elastic modulus of superior-inferior direction was higher than those of other directions. Elastic moduli of 3 orthogonal directions showed different correlation with 3D architectural parameters. Elastic moduli of SI and ML directions showed significant strong to moderate correlation with BV/TV, SMI and 3DFD. Conclusion: Elastic modulus of cancellous bone of pig mandibular condyle was highest in the SI direction and it was supposed that the change into plate-like structure of trabeculae was mainly affected by increase of trabeculae of SI and ML directions.

  • The present paper presents multiscale modelling via coupling of the discrete and finite element methods. Theoretical formulation of the discrete element method using spherical or cylindrical particles has been briefly reviewed. Basic equations of the finite element method using the explicit time integration have been given. The micr-macro transition for the discrete element method has been discussed. Theoretical formulations for macroscopic stress and strain tensors have been given. Determination of macroscopic constitutive properties using dimensionless micro-macro relationships has been proposed. The formulation of the multiscale DEM/FEM model employing the DEM and FEM in different subdomains of the same body has been presented. The coupling allows the use of partially overlapping DEM and FEM subdomains. The overlap zone in the two coupling algorithms is introduced in order to provide a smooth transition from one discretization method to the other. Coupling between the DEM and FEM subdomains is provided by additional kinematic constraints imposed by means of either the Lagrange multipliers or penalty function method. The coupled DEM/FEM formulation has been implemented in the authors' own numerical program. Good performance of the numerical algorithms has been demonstrated in a number of examples.
