  • Catalytic combustion is one of the suitable methods which is applicable to micro heat source due to high energy density and no flame quenching. And hydrogen can be oxidized at room temperature with platinum catalyst. So hydrogen-fueled micro catalytic combustor with platinum catalyst can be good and easy-handling heat source for another micro devices. In this work we focused on general catalytic combustion characteristics of hydrogen-air premixed gas in 10mm scale catalytic combustor for the further application to micro scale. Platinum was coated on dense ceramic monolith which can be installed in simple-structured catalytic combustor. We investigated the effect of flow rate, heat loss and platinum percentage in catalyst-coated monolith on catalytic combustion performance by temperature distribution in the combustor. By those results we confirmed catalytic reactivity and estimated reaction area. And we simulated micro scale catalytic reaction by sliced monolith. The results of this work will be important design factors for micro scale catalytic combustor.

  • In this paper research on micro solid propellant thruster is reported. Micro solid propellant thruster has four basic components; micro combustion chamber, micro nozzle, solid propellant and micro igniter. In this research igniter, solid propellant and combustion chamber are focused. Micro igniter was fabricated through typical micromachining and the effect of geometry was evaluated. The characteristic of solid propellant was investigated to observe burning characteristic and to obtain burning velocity. Change of thrust force and the amount of energy loss following scale down at micro combustion chamber were estimated by numerical simulation based on empirical data and through the calculation normalized specific impulses were compared to figure out the efficiency of combustion chamber.

  • Microsystem technology has been applied to space technology and became one of the enabling technology by which low cost and high efficiency are achievable. Micro propulsion system is a key technology in the miniature satellite because micro satellite requires very small and precise thrust force for maneuvering and attitude control. Micro solid propellant thruster has four basic components; micro combustion chamber, micro nozzle, solid propellant and micro igniter. • Catalytic combustion is one of the suitable methods for micro power source due to high energy density and it can be applied to micro structured chamber without consideration of quenching since it is flameless combustion. Catalyst loading in the micro structured combustion chamber is one of the most important issues in the development of micro catalytic combustors. In this research, to coat catalyst on the chamber wall, two methods were investigated. First, $Al_2O_3$ was selected as a support of Pt and $Pt/Al_2O_3$ was synthesized through the alumina sol-gel procedure. To improve the coating thickness and adhesion between catalyst and substrate, heat resistant and water solvable organic-inorganic hybrid binder was used. Porous silicon was also investigated as a catalyst support for platinum. Through the parametric studies of current density and etching time, fabrication process of $1{\sim}2{\mu}m$ of diameter and about $25{\mu}m$ depth pores was confirmed. Coated substrates were test in the micro channel combustor which was fabricated by the wet etching and machining of SUS 304. Using $Pt/Al_2O_3$ coated substrate and Pt coated porous silicon substrate, conversion rate of fuel was over 95 % for $H_2/Air$ premixed gas.

  • Optimization of engine desist and operation parameters using a genetic algorithm was demonstrated for direct injection diesel engine combustion. A micro genetic algorithm and a modified KIVA-3V code were used for the analysis and optimization of the engine combustion. At each generation of the optimization step the micro genetic algorithm generated five groups of parameter sets, and the five cases of KIVA-3V analysis were to be performed either in series or in parallel. The micro genetic algorithm code was also parallelized by using MPI programming, and a multi-CPU parallel supercomputer was used to speed up the optimization process by four times. An example case for a fixed engine speed was performed with six parameters of intake swirl ratio, compression ratio, fuel injection included angle, injector hole number, SOI, and injection duration. A simultaneous optimization technique for the whole range of engine speeds would be suggested for further studies.

  • Combustion characteristics of a 1-butanol gel fuel were studied in atmospheric pressure condition. The butanol gel fuel was manufactured by adding hydroxypropyl-methyl cellulose (HPMC) as a gellant and the effect of the gellant concentration was observed. The combustion process of a single butanol gel droplet was divided into 3 stages including droplet heating, microexplosion, and gellant combustion. The flame was distorted compared to butanol + water mixture because of micro-explosion during the combustion. Increase of gellant concentration delayed the droplet ignition, but the combustion rate was improved due to the mass ejection during the micro-explosion.

  • A theoretical and experimental study on the combustion process in a constant volume micro combustor is described. Unlike in a macro scale constant volume combustor, the heat loss to the wall plays a major role in flame propagation in a micro micro combustor. In order to analyze the effect of heat loss on combustion phenomena, pressure transition from ignition was measured. A number of cylindrical micro combustors with different diameter and depth were used for experiment to study the effect of length scales and shape factor. The diameter of combustor ranged from 7.5mm to 22.5 mm and the height of cylinder was from 1mm to 4mm. Initial pressure was also varied for the experiment. The diagnostic methods were severely limited due to the size of the apparatus and uncertainties of certain quantities to be measured in a small-scale environment. An analytical method to derive physical quantities that are essential for performance prediction from the pressure measurements is described.

  • The combustion test of LMP-103S, a propellant based on ADN(Ammonium Dinitramide), was performed with a 50 mN scale micro-thruster. The micro-thruster was made with photosensitive glass using MEMS manufacturing process. $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was used as a catalyst to decompose LMP-103S. After injecting 90 wt.% hydrogen peroxide into combustion chamber to preheat the catalyst, LMP-103S was injected for the combustion test. As a result, the ignition and combustion of LMP-103S was confirmed in platinum catalyst environment with the combustion chamber temperature going up to $650^{\circ}C$.

  • A numerical analysis of a lean premixed combustor in a micro gas turbine was carried out to investigate the correlation between the turbulent mixing and emission characteristics on the combustor geometries. The interaction between the burners, by flow direction and momentum, significantly influenced on the turbulent mixing and combustion characteristics. The vortex which was generated by thermal expansion was observed during the combustion process, this was distinguished from the combustor geometries. The results showed that these characteristics can affect the NOx emission.

  • An experimental study has been carried on single fuel droplets of water-in-light oil emulsions in an electric furnace to elucidate the dominant factor for the occurrence of micro-explosions. The tests were carried out by changing the following four parameters; the surfactant, the ratio of water to light oil, ambient temperature in electric furnace, and four kinds of fuels having different viscosity(light-oil, kerosene, iso-octane, bunker fuel). The result shows that micro-explosion phenomena is dominated without surfactant and below 30% of water content. Explosion-time is affected by ambient temperature and viscosity of used fuel.
