Dissolved air flotation (DAF), in which suspended solids are removed from water by means of micro-size air bubbles raising slowly up in water and lifting solids from water (smaller than those) attached onto the micro-bubbles as well as those (larger than solids) being attached on these, have been used in water and wastewater since 1920s. The dissolved air flotation technology was originally based on the laminar flow conditions prevailing in water to be treated, but the latest development in that technology has led now to a situation, in which the flow conditions may also be turbulent ones in the modem dissolved air flotation units. Despite of that, the flotation phenomenon used in this unit operation for removal suspended solids from water or wastewater is still the same.

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) has been well known for the gravity separation process. The solids to be separated are transferred from the water body to the water surface using micro-air bubbles. DAF has also been used for enhancing solids-liquid separation of industrial and municipal wastewater by adding a its unit parallel to a sedimentation unit to reduce the hydraulic loading in the sedimentation clarifier. This study was to investigate flotation characteristics of activated sludge by the recent DAF technique without chemical agents. In addition, the effect on temperature in flotation of activated sludge and the thickening degree of activated sludge were studied.
Although DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) has been successfully accepted for water and wastewater treatment, the fundamental characteristics of the process have not been fully investigated. Water is saturated with compressed air to dissolve the air into the water at high pressure in saturation tank. Then the water containing dissolved air is released into a floatation tank at a lower pressure, generating micro-bubbles that rise gently through the water and carry the suspended matter to the surface. This study investigated the removal of sewage using automatic mixture type DAF pump and non-powered flotation tank. Characteristics of two devices were compared and analyzed with samples. The results showed that the PAC exhibited higher performance than other coagulants. When air dosage was 2.5ml/l/min, treatment was stable in operation. In the DAF pump with a pressure of 4 atm., the average size of bubbles was 36.2${\mu}m$. Removal efficiency of SS was 80%. At this time removal efficiency of COD was about 80%, of T-N was 30% and T-P was 70% in stable operation. It was concluded that DAF pump system with micro bubble performed higher efficiencies compared to general DAF system for treating wastewater.
The purpose of this study is to convert hydrophobic dyestuff to hydrophilic dyestuff by reacting cationic collector with anionic dyestuff and reaction anionic collector with cationic dyestuff. The removal of colors from aqueous solutions and/or dispersions has been studied by dispersed-air flotation in a batch column. In this studies used generated micro bubble by ceramic gas diffuser having micro pore size for air flotation process. In this study, a ceramic gas diffuser with micro pore size was used to generate micro bubbles for the air flotation process. Two colours were used for the experiments: Basic Yellow 1 (cationic dyestuff) and Direct Orange 10 (anionic dyestuff). All two were effectively removed by flotation within 8 mins. Sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium oleate (an anionic collector), and amines (a cationic collector) were found to be effective as collectors in the removal of color, which was found to be related to the pH of the solution and the amount of collector added to it, with high collector dosages causing the process to become pH-independent.

The saturator and injection nozzle are important facilities on the dissolved air flotation process. To increase the formation of micro bubble, it is required to improve the air dissolving performance in the saturator and keep the pressure uniform from the saturator to the nozzle. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the saturator and the hydraulic effect of the nozzle and the pipe structure. The air volume concentration, bubble size and bubble residual time were measured in the test. The saturator, which had mounted with the spray nozzle, showed a good performance for bubble formation. Also, the characteristics of micro bubble formation were influenced by pressure uniformity and flow velocity through the orifice in the nozzle.

It is well known that volatile compounds including disinfection by-products as well as emissive dissolved gas in water can be removed effectively by air stripping. The micro-bubbles of flotation unit are so tiny as microns while the diameter of fine bubbles applied to air stripping is ranged from hundreds to thousands of micrometer. Therefore, the micro-bubbles in flotation can supply very wide specific surface area to transfer volatile matters through gas-liquid boundary. In addition, long emission time also can be gained to emit the volatile compound owing to the slow rise velocity of micro-bubbles in the flotation tank. There was a significant difference of the THMs species removal efficiency between air stripping and flotation experiments in this study. Moreover, the results of comparative experiments on the removal characteristics of THMs between air stripping and flotation revealed that the mass transfer coefficient, $K_La$ showed obvious differences. To overcome the limit of low removal efficiency of dissolved volatile compounds such as THMs in flotation process, the operation range of bubble volume concentration is required to higher than the operation condition of conventional particle separation.
The sludge flotation/thickening apparatus equipped a micro-bubble generating pump was used to investigate micro-bubble generating properties on operational parameters. We evaluated micro-bubble generating properties as results to be operated the apparatus by operational parameters which are pump discharge pressure, air/water ratio(A/W ratio), air flow rate, and water flow rate. Micro-bubble generating efficiencies in pumps without recycling flow and with 50% of recycling flow was found to be very efficient on optimum A/W ratio from 1.06 to 3.62% and optimum A/W ratio from 1.05 to 4.06%, respectively. In condition of 3.6% of A/W ratio, we showed that the apparatus could be generated 36,000 ppm of micro-bubble concentration to be optimum treatment efficiency in sludge thickening process.
A flotation process has a shorter processing time and needs less space than a sedimentation process. Dissolved air flotation process (DAF) is an efficient flotation method and used in a conventional wastewater treatment process. However, DAF requires the circulation of water containing compressed air and requires expensive installation and operation cost. Plasma Air Flotation (PAF) process is able to float flocs by micro bubbles generated from underwater plasma without the circulation of bubbly water and additional saturators. Therefore, PAF can be an alternative solution overcoming economic barriers. In this study, Humic acid removal efficiency by PAF process was compared with that of sedimentation process. 44.67% and 87.3% reduction rate based on UV 254 absorbance has been measured in sedimentation and PAF respectively. In particular, PAF in the flocculation zone can dramatically remove humic acid from water. In flocculation zone, PAF can separate organic matters but sedimentation cannot.
Dissolved air flotation is a solid-liquid separation system that uses fine bubbles rising from bottom to remove particles in water. In order to enhance the flotation velocity and removal efficiency of flocs in the flotation process, we tried to obtain pretreatment conditions for the optimum DAF process operation by comparing and evaluating features of actual floc formation and flotation velocity etc, according to coagulant types and conditions for flocculation mixing intensity by using PIA, PDA, and FSA. Accordingly, generating big flocs that have low density at low flocculation mixing intensity may reduce treatment efficiency. In addition, generating small flocs at high flocculation mixing intensity makes floc-bubbles smaller, which reduces flotation velocity, In this study, it was found that high flocculation mixing intensity could not remove the remaining micro-particles after flocculation, which had negative effects on treated water quality, Therefore, in order to enhance treatment efficiency in a flotation process, flocculation mixing intensity around $50sec^{-1}$ is effective.

Techniques such as dissolved air flotation and electroflotation, which utilize micro bubbles, are increasingly used for water and wastewater treatment. Most studies have concentrated on particle characteristics. Pretreatments that manipulate particle size and zeta potential were considered important. A recent study, which modeled the collision mechanism between micro bubbles and particles in dissolved air flotation, suggested bubble characteristics should also be important. Hydrogen micro bubbles were generated electrolytically and their zeta potentials measured under various conditions using a novel electrophoresis method. Effects of several parameters were investigated. Bubble zeta potentials were found to be pH dependent, and to have a negative value around neutral pH, becoming zero or positive at lower pH. The pH at zero zeta potential was 5.0 under study conditions. Using artificial solution and tap water, at fixed pH, bubble zeta potentials varied with solution composition. Zeta potentia]s of bubbles were affected by the types of cations and anions in solution but not by the voltage applied. These findings will help improve efficiencies of particle removal processes that utilize micro bubbles. As bubble zeta potential varies with solution composition, it needs to be measured for each composition to understand those effects, which increase removal efficiency.
