Characteristics of micro carbon structures fabricated with laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) are investigated. An argon ion laser (λ=514.5nm) and ethylene gas were utilized as the energy source and precursor, respectively. The laser beam was focused onto a graphite substrate to produce carbon deposit through thermal decomposition of the precursor. Average growth rate of a carbon rod increased for increasing laser power and pressure. Micro carbon rods with good surface quality were obtained at near the threshold condition. Micro carbon rods with aspect ratio of about 100 and micro tubular structures were fabricated to demonstrate the possible application of this method to the fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis of the micro carbon structures revealed that the carbon rods are consisting of amorphous carbon.

Recently, with the development of bio-technology the interests in the micro-fluidic devices for analysis in the fields of biology and medical science have been steadily increasing. Although polymer is considered as one of the best materials for micro-fluidic devices. glass or silicon molds fabricated by photo-lithographic technique have been commonly used. However, it is generally perceived that the conventional photolithographic technique has the limitation for fabricating micro-channels for micro-fluidic devices. In this work, the possibility of fabrication of micro-fluidic channels on PDMS by using the mechano-chemical process and the effect of surface states on the fluid flow were investigated. Experimental results revealed that PDMS mold fabricated by the mechano-chemical process could be used effectively to replicate micro-fluidic channels with high reproducibility and dimensional accuracy. It was also found that the fluid flow generation and flow speed were largely affected by the hydrophilicity and the surface roughness of the micro-channel surfaces.

We describe here a novel micro total analysis system for the purification and identification of the affinity-captured proteins. Also we demonstrated the mass analysis of the Carcinoembrionic antigen (CEA) and Alpha femtoprotein which were chosen as the target cancer marker. For MALDI-TOF analyses, the proteins should to be separated from a protein mixture and be concentrated when needed. This procedure usually takes a long time even before protease-digested samples are to be obtained from them. Here, we describe integrated and efficient micro chip for protein purification and digestion for MALDI-TOF analyses. At first, disease protein is purified by passing the micro chamber from a protein mixture or human whole serum and released from the micro affinity beads by thermal heating. Purified protein is then transfer to the hole for trypsin digestion. The final sample is analyzed by MALDI-TOF. All the processes could be finished successfully within one hour, which renders MALDI-TOF analyses of a target protein quite simple.

FIB equipment can perform sputtering and chemical vapor deposition simultaneously. It is very advantageously used to fabricate a micro structure part having 3D shape because the minimum beam size of ${\phi}$ 10nm and smaller is available. Currently FIB is not being applied in the fabrication of this micro part because of some problems to redeposition and charging effect of the substrate causing reduction of accuracy with regards to shape and productivity. Furthermore, the prediction of the material removal rate information should be required but it has been insufficient for micro part fabrication. The paper have the targets that are FIB-CVD characteristic analysis and minimum line pattern resolution achievement fur 3D micro fabrication. We make conclusions with the analysis of the results of the experiment according to beam current, pattern size and scanning parameters. CVD of 8 pico ampere shows superior CVD yield but CVD of 1318 pico ampere shows the pattern sputtered. And dwell time is dominant parameter relating to CVD yield.
A study was carried out to evaluate the solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) for formaldehyde emission analysis of uncoated plywood. In SPME, formaldehyde was on-fiber derivatized through headspace extraction and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The SPME was compared with desiccators (DC-JAS 233), small-scale chamber (SSC-ASTM D6007) and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE-EPA 556) methods which were performed in accordance with their respective standards. Compared to SSC (RSD 4.3%) and LLE (RSD 5.0%), the SPME method showed better repeatability (RSD 1.8%) and not much difference from DC (RSD 1.4%). The SPME has proven to be highly precise (at 95% confidence level) with better recovery (REC 102%). Validation of the SPME method for formaldehyde quantitative analysis was evidenced. In addition, the SPME by air sampling directly from plywood specimens (SPME-W) correlated best with DC ($r^2$ = 0.983), followed by LLE ($r^2$ = 0.950) and SSC ($r^2$ = 0.935).
A microcantilever is a well-known MEMS structure for sensing bio-chemical molecules. When bio-chemical molecules are adsorbed on the microcantilever's surface, resonance frequency shift is generated. There are two issues in this phenomena. The first one is which one between mass change and surface stress change effects is more dominant on the resonance frequency shift. The second one is what will be the performance change when the boundary condition is changed from cantilevers to double clamped beams. We have studied the effect of surface stress change and compared it with that of mass change by using FEM analysis. Furthermore, for microstructures having different boundary conditions, we have studied Q-factor, which determines the detection limit of micro/nano mechanical sensors.

Recently, expansion of micro-technology parts requires micro-precision machining technology. Micro-groove machining is important to fabricate micro-grating lens and many micro-parts such as microscope lens, fluidic graphite channel etc. Conventional groove fabrication methods such as etching and lithography have some problems in efficiency and surface integrity. But, mechanical micromachining methods using single crystal diamond tools can reduce these problems in chemical process. For this reason, microfabrication methods are expected to be very efficient, and widely studied. This study deals with machinability in micro-precision V-grooves machining of nickel plated layer using non-rotational single crystal diamond tool and 3-axis micro stages. Micro V-groove shape, chip formation and tool wear were investigated for the analysis of machinability of Ni plated layer.
The core ingredient of traditional Korean style soy sauce is soy bean without any wheat or rice incorporated. National brands as well as regional micro-brewed companies constitute the soy sauce market in Korea. The present study investigated the physico-chemical and sensory properties of soy sauces produced by small-scale or mass-production. Additionally, the key physico-chemical parameters sufficiently representing the critical sensory characteristics have been identified. Ten types of soy sauce brewed by the Korean traditional method were selected for the study. Among these samples, seven types were brewed in small-scales in the Gyeonggi-do region whereas the other 3 types were mass-production products of major national brands. The total solid, reducing sugar, salinity, sugar content, amino nitrogen, CIELAB, acidity, and pH of soy sauce samples were measured for the physico-chemical analysis. A generic descriptive analysis was conducted to analyze the sensory characteristics of the samples using six trained panelists. The descriptive panel developed 21 sensory attributes. The data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA, PCA and PLSR. Overall, the micro-brewed products showed significantly higher value of salinity and acidity but lower content of reducing sugar than the mass-production products. The micro-brewed soy sauces elicited stronger fermented flavor, sourness, and bitterness whereas the national brand products elicited stronger alcoholic odor, sweetness and umami taste. Sugar content, acidity, and amino nitrogen showed strong relationships with fish sauce flavor, umami taste, and rich flavor. Salinity was closely related to the overall flavor intensity.
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the chemical characteristics of Asian dust (hereafter called "AD") particles with the aid of the most advanced micro-PIXE (Particle-induced X-ray emission) analytical technique. To this end, size-selected particles were sampled on a rural peninsula of Korea (Byunsan, 35.37N; 126.27E) during AD and non-AD periods in 2004. The coarse particle (> $2{\mu}m$) number density during an AD event were 170 times higher than those of the non-AD counterpart. The average net-count of silica in individual particles collected on AD event was roughly 11 times higher than that of non-AD counterpart. The X-ray net-counts of trace elements (Zn, Co, Mn, and V) were also considerably high in AD relative to the non-AD day. Particle classification based on the inter ratio analysis of elemental net-count suggests that a large portion of the coarse particles collected during AD event underwent chemical transformation to a certain degree. The visual interpretation of micro-PIXE elemental maps and elemental localization data in and/or on individual AD particles clarified the internal mixture of AD particles with sea-salt and artificial metallic particles.
Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a multifaceted surface sensitive methodology which exploits spectroscopy-based analysis for various applications. This technique is based on the massive amplification of Raman signals which were feeble previously in order to use them for appropriate identification at qualitative and quantitative in chemical as well as biological systems. This novel powerful technique can be utilized to identify pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. As far as SERS is concerned, one of the most studied problems has been functionalization of SERS active substrate. Metal colloids and nanostructures or microstructures synthesized using noble metals such as Au, Ag and Cu are considered to be SERS active. Silver and gold are extensively used as SERS active substrates due to chemical inertness and stability in air compare to copper. However, use of Cu as a suitable alternative has been taken into account as it is cheap. Herein, we have synthesized air-stable copper microstructures/nanostructures by chemical, electrochemical and microwave-assisted methods. In this paper, we have also discussed the use of as synthesized copper micro/nanostructures as inexpensive yet effective SERS active substrates for the fast identification of micro-organisms like Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
