  • This paper presents a new scheme of neural network controller to improve to improve the robustuous of robot manipulator using digital signal processors. Digital processors, DSPs, are micro-processors that are particularly developed for fast numerical computations involving sums and products of variables. Digital version of most advanced control algorithms can be defined as sums and producrs of measured variables, thus it can be programmed and executed through DSPs. In addition, DSPs are as fist in computation as most 32-bit micro-processors and yet at a fraction of their prices. These features make DSPs a viable computational tool in digital implementation of sophisticated controllers. During past decade it was proposed the well-established theorys for the adaptive control of linear systems, but there exits relativly little gensral theoral for the adaptive control of nonlinear systems. Perforating of the proposed controller is illustrated. This paper describes a new approach to the design of adaptive controller and implementation of real-time control for assembling robotic manipulator using digital signal processor. Digital signal processors used in implementing real time adaptive control algorithm are TMS320C50 series made in TI'Co..

  • In this paper, output precision characteristics of a planar 6 degree-of-freedom parallel mechanisms are investigated, where the 6 degree-of-freedom mechanism is formed by adding an additional link along with an actuated joint in each serial subchain of the planar 3 degree-of-freedom parallel mechanism. Kinematic analysis for the parallel mechanism is performed, and its first-order kinematic characteristics are examined via kinematic isotropic index, maximum and minimum input-output velocity transmission ratios of the mechanisms. Based on this analysis, two types of planar 6 degrees-of-freedom parallel manipulators are selected. Then, dynamic characteristics of the two selected planar 6 degree-of-freedom parallel mechanisms, via Frobenius norms of inertia matrix and power modeling array, are investigated to compare the magnitudes of required control efforts of both three large actuators and three small actuators when the link lengths of three additional links are changed. It can be concluded from the analysis results that each of these two planar 6 degrees-of-freedom parallel mechanisms has an excellent control-in-the-small characteristics and therefore, it can be very effectively employed as a high-precision macro-micro manipulator when both its link lengths and locations of small and large actuators are properly chosen.

  • In this study, two new types of micro-grippers in which micro-fingers are actuated by piezoelectric multi-layer benders and stacks are introduced for the manipulation of micrometer-sized objects. First, we constructed a 3-chopstick-mechanism tungsten gripper, which is composed of three chopsticks: two are designed to grip micro-objects, and tile third is used to help grasp and release the objects through overcoming especially electrostatic force among some surface effects including electrostatic, van der Waals forces and surface tension. Second, a 2-chopstick-mechanism silicon micro-gripper that uses an integrated force sensor to control the gripping force was developed. The micro-gripper is composed of a piezoelectric multilayer bender for actuating the gripper fingers, silicon fingertips fabricated by use of silicon-based micromachining, and supplementary supports. The micro-gripper is referred to as a hybrid-type micro-gripper because it is composed of two main components; micro-fingertips fabricated using micromachining technology to integrate a very sensitive force sensor for measuring the gripping force, and piezoelectric gripper finger actuators that are capable of large gripping forces and moving strokes. The gripping force signal was found to have a sensitivity of 667 N/V. To the design of each of components of both of the grippers. a systematic design approach was applied, which made it possible to establish the functional requirements and design parameters of the micro-grippers. The micro-grippers were installed on a manual manipulator to assess its performance in tasks such as moving micro-objects from one position to a desired position. The experiment showed that the micro-grippers function effectively.

  • This paper describes the real-time implementation of an adaptive controller fur the robotic manipulator. Digital signal processors(DSPs) are special purpose micro-processors that are particularly powerful for intensive numerical computations involving sums and products of variables. TMS320C50 chips are used in implementing real time adaptive control algorithms to provide an enhanced motion for robotic manipulators. In the proposed scheme, adaptation laws are derived from the improved Lyapunov second stability analysis based on the direct adaptive control theory. The adaptive controller consists of an adaptive feedforward controller and feedback controller. The proposed control scheme is simple in structure, fast in computation, and suitable for real-time control. Moreover, this scheme does not require any accurate dynamic modeling, nor values of manipulator parameters and payload. Performance of the adaptive controller is illustrated by simulation and experimental results for a assembling robot.

  • This paper describes a real-time control architecture for DUSAUV (Dual Use Semi-Autonomous Underwater Vehicle), which has been developed at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO), KORDI, for being a test-bed oj development of technologies for underwater navigation and manipulator operation. DUSAUV has three built-in computers, seven thrusters for 6 degree of freedom motion control, one 4-function electric manipulator, one pan/tilt unit for camera, one ballasting motor, built-in power source, and various sensors such as IMU, DVL, sonar, and so on. A supervisor control system for GUI and manipulator operation is mounted on the surface vessel and communicates with vehicle through a fiber optic link. Furthermore, QNX, one of real-time operating system, is ported on the built-in control and navigation computers of vehicle for real-time control purpose, while MicroSoft OS product is ported on the supervisor system for GUI programming convenience. A hierarchical control architecture which consist of three layers (application layer, real-time layer, and physical layer) has been developed for efficient control system of above complex underwater robotic system. The experimental results with implementation of the layered control architecture for various motion control of DUSAUV in a basin of KRISO is also provided.

  • A new 6 degrees-of-freedom micro stage, based on parallel mechanisms and actuated by using piezoelectric elements, has been developed for the application of micro positioning such as semiconductor manufacturing devices, high precision optical measurement systems, and high accurate machining. The micro stage structure consists of a base platform and an upper platform(stage). The base platform can effectively generates planar motion with yaw motion, while the stage can do vertical motion with roll and pitch motions with respect to the base platform. This separated structure has an advantage of less interference among actuators. The forward and inverse kinematics of the micro stage are discussed. Also, through linearization of kinematic equations about an operating point on the assumption that the configuration of the micro stage remains essentially constant throughout a workspace is performed. To maximize the workspace of the stage relative to fixed frame, an optimal design procedure of geometric parameter is shown. Hardware description and a prototype are presented. The prototype is about 150mm in height and its base platform is approximately 94mm in diameter. The workspace of the prototype is obtained by computer simulation. Kinematic calibration procedure of the micro stage and its results are presented.

  • The error back-propagation(BP) algorithm is widely used for finding optimum weights of multi-layer neural networks. However, the critical drawback of the BP algorithm is its slow convergence of error. The major reason for this slow convergence is the premature saturation which is a phenomenon that the error of a neural network stays almost constant for some period time during learning. An inappropriate selections of initial weights cause each neuron to be trapped in the premature saturation state, which brings in slow convergence speed of the multi-layer neural network. In this paper, to overcome the above problem, Micro-Genetic algorithms(.mu.-GAs) which can allow to find the near-optimal values, are used to select the proper weights and slopes of activation function of neurons. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms will be demonstrated by some computer simulations of two d.o.f planar robot manipulator.

  • The force sensor is essentially required in controlling robot manipulator in such applications as precise assembly of mechanical parts, deburring and polishing and various kinds of 6-axis force sensors are developed for these application. This paper presents the algorithm of horizontal assembly of circular cross-sectional workpiece using 3-axis force sensor and procedure to develop the sensor. The sensor is calibrated and tested using AID converter and 16 bit micro computer. The result is $\pm$0.03% FS of zero stability, 0.1%FS of linearity and $\pm$0.05% FS of resolution. The sensor will be used in the research of robot application such as assembly and deburring interfaced with micro computer based robot controller which is under development at the robotics lab.
