  • We investigated the programmable memory characteristics of nanoparticle-based memory devices based on the elementary metal nanoparticles (Co and Au) and their binary mixture synthesized by a micellar route to ordered arrays of metal nanoparticles as charge trapping layers. According to the metal nanoparticle species quite different programming/erasing efficiencies were observed, resulting in the tunable memory characteristics at the same programming/erasing bias conditions. This finding will be a good implication for further device scaling and novel device applications since most processes are based on the conventional semiconductor processes.

  • Antioxidative ability of anthocyanins in water-in-oil microemulsion was examined. Microemulsion was prepared by solubilizing crude anthocyanins extracted from grape skin (Cambell early) in organic solvent (hexane) containing anionic surfactant [bis (2-ethylhexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate, AOT] and linolenic acid (10%, w/v). Lipid oxidation significantly decreased with increasing concentration of anthocyanins ($5-20\;{\mu}M$) at micellar phase, and increasing micelle size ($Wo=5-20\;{\mu}M$). At given micelle size (Wo=10), lipid oxidation decreased as number of micelles decreased. These results indicate antioxidative ability of anthocyanins is critically affected by water core and micelle structure formed by surfactant. Interactions between AOT and anthocyanins decreased antioxidative ability of anthocyanins. Antioxidative ability of anthocyanins significantly increased when ${\alpha}$-tocopherol was added into organic phase. This indicates of synergism between the two antioxidants.

  • Oxidation of glutamic acid is performed in aqueous acid media at $30^{\circ}C$ under the kinetic condition [glutamic acid]$_T{\gg}[Cr(VI)]_T$. Effect of combination of micellar catalyst (SDS, TX-100) and promoter (PA, bpy, phen) has been studied. Among the promoters phen accelerates the reaction most in aqueous media. But the rate acceleration is small in the case. Combination of promoter and catalyst produces much better result. Maximum rate enhancement occurs in presence of the combination of bpy and SDS.

  • Oil pollution seriously endangers the biological environment and human health. Due to the diversity of oils and the complexity of oil composition, it is of great significance to identify the oil contaminants. The 3-D fluorescence spectrum combined with a second order correction algorithm was adopted to measure an oil mixture with overlapped fluorescence spectra. The self-weighted alternating trilinear decomposition (SWATLD) is a kind of second order correction, which has developed rapidly in recent years. Micellar solutions of #0 diesel, #93 gasoline and ordinary kerosene in different concentrations were made up. The 3-D fluorescence spectra of the mixed oil solutions were measured by a FLS920 fluorescence spectrometer. The SWATLD algorithm was applied to decompose the spectrum data. The predict concentration and recovery rate obtained by the experiment show that the SWATLD algorithm has advantages of insensitivity to component number and high resolution for mixed oils.

  • A series of elastin-like proteins, $SKGPG[V(VKG)_3VKVPG]_n$-(ELP1-90)WP (n = 1, 2, 3, and 4), were biosynthesized based on the hydrophobic and lysine linkage domains of tropoelastin. The formation of self-assembled hydrophobic aggregates was monitored in order to determine the influence of cationic segments on phase transition properties as well as the sensitivity to changes in salt and pH. The thermal transition profiles of the proteins fused with only one or two cationic blocks (n = 1 or 2) were similar to that of the counterpart ELP1-90. In contrast, diblock proteins that contain 3 and 4 cationic blocks displayed a triphasic profile and no transition, respectively. Upon increasing the salt concentration and pH, a stimulus-induced phase transition from a soluble conformation to an insoluble aggregate was observed. The effects of cationic segments on the stimuli sensitivity of cationic bimodal ELPs were interpreted in terms of their structural and molecular characteristics.

  • Molecular self-assembled of surfactant viologen are of recent interest because they can from functional electrodes as well as micellar assemblies, which can be profitably utilized for display devices, photoelectrochemical studies and electrocatalysis as electron acceptor or electron mediator. Fromherz et al studied the self-assembly of thiol and disulfide derivatives of viologens bearing long n-alkyl chains on Au electrode surface[1]. The electrochemical behavior of self-assembled viologen monolayer has been investigated with QCM, which has been known as nano-gram order mass detector. The self-assembly process of viologen was monitored using resonant frequency(ΔF) and resonant resistance(R). The redox process of viologen was observed with resonant frequency(ΔF).

  • Several forms of gangliosides have been separated from various types of biological matrices using cyclodextrin-modified capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). Quantitative analysis of phospholipids from biological fluids was achieved by micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) using 35mM sodium dodecyl sulfate. Phosphorylation, one of the most important post-translational modifications of proteins at serine, threonine and tyrosine residues in small peptides were identified and quantitative analyses of phosphopeptides were performed. Seven different neuropeptides which are relative the pain reachanism in the vertebrate central nervons system were also separated by CZE.

  • The microphase adsorption - spectral correction (MPASC) technique was described and applied to study the interaction of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) with cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The synergism mechanism of micelle was analyzed and discussed. The aggregation of FITC on CTAB obeys the Langmuir monolayer adsorption. Results showed that the monomer and micellar aggregate is $FITC-CTAB_3$ and $(FITC-CTAB_3)_{29}$, respectively at pH 9.62. The adsorption constant of the CTAB-FITC aggregate was determined to be $2.10{\times}10^5$. Interestingly, it was observed for the addition of an anionic surfactant to desorb FITC from its CTAB aggregate and this has been applied to the quantitative determination of trace amounts of anionic detergent (AD) in sewage.

  • Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is perceived as an attractive tool for the analysis of pharmaceuticals and biological materials because of their high separation efficiency, easy separation and low running cost. New concept of micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) expanded the application of CE to the separation of neutral molecules. Validation of CE as an analytical technique for quality control of pharmaceuticals should be confirmed by quantitative analysis and the peak confirmation. In this study, the quantitative analyses of various types of neutral, acidic and basic components (acetaminophen, caffeine, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, thiamine, chlorpheniramine, phenylpropanolamine, dl-methylephedrine and dextromethorphan) in complex cold medicines have been accomplished using CE. Combined methods of MECC using SDS and capillary zone electrophoresis lowering the pH of running buffer were adopted to determine the ingredients in capsule type or liquid formula complex medicines without particular sample pretreatment. The results indicate that CE is a promising technique for quality control analysis of pharmaceuticals as a validation method.
