  • The environmental capacity and watershed pollution load reduction of Yongdam reservoir were estimated by the simulation of water quality variation process with the target water quality establishment, pollution load estimation and flow analysis. The potable raw water $I{\sim}II$, COD $1.0{\sim}3.0$ mg/L and TP $0.01{\sim}0.03$ mg/L were selected as the target water quality Yongdam reservoir water quality model was constructed with WASP5 contained 42 segments and the correlation of calibrated results were BOD 0.73, $PO_4-P$ 0.98. The environmental capacity for target quality COD 2.0 mg/L and TP 0.02 mg/L were BOD $131,880{\sim}4,694$ kg/d, TP $7,855 {\sim}167$ kg/d which were less than exists, and the related reduction ratios were BOD $51{\sim}62%$, TP $47{\sim}67%$ which were middle amount in exists. The load reduction ratios to meet the potable raw water $I{\sim}II$ were BOD $72{\sim}16%$, TP $78{\sim}36%$ in existing conditions and BOD $81{\sim}44%$, TP $84{\sim}52%$ in new conditions. BOD was the least one and TP was the second least in 4 results. The effects of the load reduction assignment to subbasin were dominant in TP but little in COD.

  • The measurement methods for total nitrogen in wastewater containing a high concentration of nitrogen were evaluated. (1) The UV spectrophotometry, (2) reduction-distillation Kjeldahl, (3) total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and (4) ion chromatography methods were applied. The experimental procedure of the UV spectrophotometric method was simple, but it produced large errors deriving from the dilution of samples and calibration standards. While, the reduction-distillation Kjeldahl method didn't need dilution, but the amount of Devarda's alloy and NaOH lead to large errors up to 50 mg/L. The levels of total nitrogen measured by each method were as follows: reduction-distillation Kjeldahl ($568.6{\pm}38.7mg/L$) > UV spectrophotometry ($527.3{\pm}9.6mg/L$) > total Kjeldahl nitrogen method ($494.7{\pm}21.4mg/L$) > ion chromatography method ($417.9{\pm}7.3mg/L$). Therefore, the reduction-distillation Kjeldahl method is preferred for wastewater with the high concentration of nitrogen. Optimal conditions for each experimental procedure, however, are needed to be confirmed, and the Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) for total nitrogen is required for reliable measurements.

  • Toxic hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), was reduced to a less toxic trivalent chromium form by E. coli ATCC 33456. The suitable electron donor for Cr(VI) reduction was glucose. E. coli ATCC 33456 was more resistant to metal cations than other reported Cr(VI) reducing microorganisms. Cell growth was inhibited by the presence of Cr(VI) in a liquid medium and Cr(VI) reduction accompanied cell growth. With a hydraulic retention time of 20 h, Cr(VI) reducing efficiency was 100% to 84% when Cr(VI) concentration in the influent was in the range of 10 to 40 mg L$\^$-1/. Specific rate of Cr(VI) reduction was 2.41 mg Cr(VI) g DCW$\^$-1/ h$\^$-1/ when 40 mg L$\^$-1/ of Cr(VI) influent was used. This result suggested the potential application of E. coli ATCC 33456 for the detoxification of Cr(VI) in Cr(VI) contaminated wastewater.

  • To develop various usable water from coal seam gas (CSG) water that needs to be pumped out from coal seams for methane gas production, a feasibility study was carried out, evaluating and analysing a recent report (Coal Seam Gas Water Management Policy 2012) from Queensland State Government in Australia to suggest potential CSG water treatment options for fit-for-purpose usable water production. As CSG water contains intrinsically high salinity-driven total dissolved solid (TDS), bicarbonate, aliphatic carbon, $Ca^{+2}$, $Mg^{+2}$ and so on, it was found that appropriate treatment technologies are required to reduce the hardness below 60 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ by setting the reduction rates of $Ca^{+2}$, $Mg^{+2}$ and Na+ concentrations, as well as TDS reduction. Also, Along with fiber filtration and membrane separation, an oxidation degradation process was found to be required. Along with salinity reduction, as CSG water contains organic compounds (TOC: 248 mg/L, $C_6-C_9$: <20 mg/L and $C_{10}-C_{36}$: <60 mg/L), compounds with relatively high molecular weights ($C_{10}-C_{36}$) need to be treated first. Therefore, this study suggests a combined system design with filtration (Reverse osmosis) and oxidation reduction (electrolysis) technologies, offering proper operating conditions to produce fit-for-purpose usable water from CSG water.

  • This paper was performed for a cost-effectiveness analysis of pharmacologic treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Agents modeled were cholestyramine, gemfibrozil. bezafibrate, lovastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin. Pharmacologic effectiveness was estimated by regression from reported clinical trials. Pharmacologic effects were expressed as the percent change of blood cholesterol level. Cost estimates included patients' travel expenses and time loss as well as resource consumption in the health care sector. Bezafibrate was the most efficient agent for reducing total cholesterol levels, having an cost over 1 year of ₩31.400 per percent reduction in total cholesterol. Simvastatin (10mg/d) was also efficient(₩33,100 per percent reduction). Chole styramine(8g/d) was least efficient at ₩90,200. For low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. simvastatin(10mg/d) was most efficient, at ₩23,200 per percent reduction, followed by lovastatin(20mg/d) at ₩28,000. Gemfibrozil was least efficient at ₩77,800 per percent reduction. For high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. bezafibrate(400mg/d) was most efficient at ₩39,300 per percent increase of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Cholestyramine was least efficient at ₩514,700. Analyses combining low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density cholesterol effects suggest that bezafibrate(600mg/d) and simvastatin (10mg/d) were most efficient for reducing cardiovascular risk. The cost-effectiveness analysis results show that both simvastatin and bezafibrate could be efficient treatment. Simvastatin provide more effective treatment at higher cost, whereas bezafibrate is more cost-effective, as it may be less effective, at lower cost. Therefore, clinicians should choose reasonable treatment according to the patient's needs This pharmacoeconimc analysis will provide a guideline for efficient pharmacologic treatment and also be reference data for pricing new drugs.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Various sodium reduction policies have been implemented. However, there are limitations in the aspect of actual field applicability and efficiency. For effective sodium reduction, cooperation with the field is required and consumer preference must be considered. Thus, this study aimed to develop a low-sodium burger considering field applicability and consumer preference. MATERIALS/METHODS: Focus group interviews and in-depth interviews on the sodium reduction measures were conducted with nine professionals in related fields to discuss practical methods for sodium reduction from September 7 to 21, 2018. By reflecting the interview results, a burger using a low-sodium sauce was developed, and preference analysis for sodium in the burger sauces and finished products was performed. The consumer preference for low-sodium burgers was evaluated on 51 college students on November 12, 2018. RESULTS: The results of the professional interview showed that it is desirable to practice sodium reduction gradually, and by reflecting this, the burger sauce was prepared by adjusting the ratio of refined salt to 15%, 30%, and 50%. The sodium content of the burger using low-sodium sauce was 399 mg/100 g in the control group, 362 mg/100 g in the H1 group, and 351.5 mg/100 g in the H2 group, showing a 9.3-11.9% decrease in sodium in the H1 and H2 groups. The preference evaluation on the low-sodium burgers showed a higher preference for burgers with 9.3-11.9% sodium reduction, which did not affect the overall taste. CONCLUSIONS: This study examined the potential for sodium reduction in the franchise foodservice industry. An approximate 10% sodium reduction resulted in an increase in consumer preference without affecting the strength of the taste. Thus, if applied gradually, sodium reduction at practical levels could increase the consumer preference without changing the taste or quality and could be applied in the franchise foodservice industry.

  • The Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic(OSA) process is a modified activated sludge processes for sludge reduction. It is evaluated that the sludge production in OSA process can decrease to 88% because of biomass decay and kinetic parameter($Y_H$ 0.237mgVSS/mgCOD, $b_H$ $0.195d^{-1}$) in anaerobic reactor, when compared with CAS process. However, it has problems caused by sludge reduction such as increase of nutrient loading. In case that the anoxic condition through the introduction of the intermittent aeration for the enhancement of nitrogen removal ability build up and enough rbCOD is suppled, maximum 88% of nitrogen is removed in the OSA process. If the OSA process optimizing the intermittent aeration cycle is applied to the separate sewage system with high rbCOD fraction, it can be converted to advanced process in terms of the sludge reduction and nitrogen removal, simultaneously.

  • In order to reduce operating voltage of the GaN based blue-violet laser diodes, the effect of highly Mg doped GaN layer, which was grown below ohmic contact metals, on contact resistivity as well as operating voltage has been investigated. The addition of the highly Mg doped GaN layer greatly reduced contact resistivity of Pd/Pt/Au ohmic contacts from $5.2 \times {10}^-2 \Omegaㆍ$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 7.5 \times {10}^-4 \Omegaㆍ$\textrm{cm}^2$$. In addition, it also decreased device voltage at 20 mA by more than 3 V. Temperature- dependent sheet resistivity of the highly Mg doped GaN layer suggested that the reduction of the contact resistivity could be attributed to predominant current flow at the interface between the Pd/Pt/Au contacts and p-GaN through a deep level defect band, rather than the valence band.

  • Titanium sponge is industrially produced by the Kroll process. In order to understand the importance of the emerging smelting and recycling process, it is necessary to review the conventional production process of titanium. Therefore this paper provides a general overview of the conventional titanium manufacturing system mainly by the Kroll process. The Kroll process can be divided into four sub-processes as follows: (1) Chlorination of raw TiO2 with coke, by the fluidized bed chlorination or molten salt chlorination (2) Magnesium reduction of TiCl4 and vacuum distillation of MgCl2 and Mg by reverse U-type or I-type with reduction-distillation integrated retorts (3) Electrolysis process of MgCl2 by monopolar cells or multipolar cells to electrolyze into chlorine gas and Mg. (4) Crushing and melting process in which sponge titanium is crushed and then melted in a vacuum arc furnace or an electron beam furnace Although the apparatus and procedures have improved over the past 80 years, the Kroll process is the costly and time-consuming batch operation for the reduction of TiCl4 and the separation of MgCl2.
