  • A variety of minor alloying elements such as Zr, Sr, Y, and Gd were added to Mg-3%Zn-0.5%Sn base alloy to form various fine precipitates and their effects on the microstructure, tensile properties, and sheet metal formability were investigated. Various very fine precipitates along with fine second phases were observed by the additions. It was found that Zr or Gd additive has a role to suppress the grain coarsening of alloy sheets during the hot working process. The Zr-added alloy showed the highest tensile elongation at $250^{\circ}C$ whereas the Gd-added alloy exhibited the best sheet metal forming characteristics in terms of CCV (conical cup value) and spring-back tendency.

  • Al-Si-SiC composite powders with intra-granular SiC particles were prepared by a gas atomization process. The composite powders were mixed with Al-Zn-Mg alloy powders as a function of weight percent. Those mixture powders were compacted with the pressure of 700 MPa and then sintered at the temperature of $565-585^{\circ}C$. T6 heat treatment was conducted to increase their mechanical properties by solid-solution precipitates. Each relative density according to the optimized sintering temperature of those powders were determined as 96% at $580^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders (composition A), 97.9% at $575^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders with 5 wt.% of Al-Si-SiC powders (composition B), and 98.2% at $570^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders with 10 wt.% of Al-Si-SiC powders (composition C), respectively. Each hardness, tensile strength, and wear resistance test of those sintered samples was conducted. As the content of Al-Si-SiC powders increased, both hardness and tensile strength were decreased. However, wear resistance was increased by the increase of Al-Si-SiC powders. From these results, it was confirmed that Al-Si-SiC/Al-Zn-Mg composite could be highly densified by the sintering process, and thus the composite could have high wear resistance and tensile strength when the content of Al-Si-SiC composite powders were optimized.

  • The influences of a small amount of CaO addition on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of AZ81 casting alloy have been investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, immersion and electrochemical tests. The added CaO led to the refinement of ${\alpha}$-Mg grains and the decrease in ${\beta}$ precipitate content by the formation of an $Al_2Ca$ phase. The AZ81-CaO alloy had a better corrosion resistance than the AZ81 alloy. The microstructural characterization on the corroded surface revealed that the enhanced corrosion resistance of the CaO-containing alloy may well be ascribed to the increased barrier effect of precipitates formed more continuously along the grain boundaries and the incorporation of Al and Ca elements into the corrosion film, by which it became more protective.

  • This study was performed to investigate types and formation mechanism of cracks in two Al alloy welds, A5083 and A7N01 spot-welded by pulse Nd : YAG laser, using SEM, EPMA and Micro-XRD. In the weld zone, three types of crack were observed : center line crack({TEX}$C_{C}${/TEX}), diagonal crack({TEX}$C_{D}${/TEX}), and U shape crack({TEX}$C_{U}${/TEX}). Also, HAZ crack({TEX}$C_{H}${/TEX}) was observed in the HAZ region, furthermore, mixing crack({TEX}$C_{M}${/TEX}) consisting of diagonal crack and HAZ crack was observed. White film was formed at th hot crack region in the fractured surface after it was immersed to 10% NaOH water. In the case of A5083 alloy, white films in {TEX}$C_{C}${/TEX} crack and {TEX}$C_{D}${/TEX} crack region were composed of low melting phases, {TEX}$Fe_{2}SiAl_{8}${/TEX} and eutectic phases, $Mg_2$Al$_3$ and $Mg_2$Si. Such films observed $CuAl_2$, {TEX}$Mg_{32}(Al,Zn)_{3}${/TEX}, MgZn$_2$, $Al_2$CuMg and $Mg_2$Si were observed in the whitely etched films near {TEX}$C_{C}${/TEX} crack and {TEX}$C_{D}${/TEX} crack regions. The formation of liquid films was due to the segregation of Mg, Si, Fe in the case of A5083 alloy and Zn, Mg, Cu, Sim in the case of A7N01 alloy, respectively. The {TEX}$C_{C}${/TEX} and {TEX}$C_{D}${/TEX} cracks were regarded as a result of the occurrence of tensile strain during the welding process. The formation of {TEX}$C_{M}${/TEX} crack is likely to be due to the presence of liquid film at the grain boundary near the fusion line in the base metal as well as in the weld fusion zone during solidification. The {TEX}$C_{U}${/TEX} crack is considered a result of the collapsed keyhole through incomplete closure during rapid solidification.

  • An amorphous single phase and coexistent amorphous and hcp-Mg phases in Mg-Zn-Ce system were found to form in the composition ranges of 20 to 40% Zn, 0 to 10% Ce and 5 to 20% Zn, 0 to 5% Ce, respectively. A $Mg_{85}Zn_{12}Ce_{3}$ amorphous alloy containing nanoscale hcp-Mg particles was found to form either by melt spinning or by heat treatment of melt -spun ribbon. The particle size of the hcp-Mg phase can be controlled in the range of 4 to 20 nm. The mixed phase alloy prepared thus has a good bending ductility and exhibits high ultimate tensile strength($\sigma_{B}$) ranging from 670 to 930 MPa and fracture elongation($\varepsilon_{f}$) of 5.2 to 2.0%. The highest specific strength($\sigma_{B}$/density =$\sigma_{s}$)$3.6 \times 10^5N \cdot m/kg$. It should be noted that the highest values of flB, US and ?1 are considerably higher than those (690MPa,$2.5 \times 10^5N \cdot m/kg$and 2.5%) for amorphous Mg-Zn-Ce alloys. The increase of the mechanical strengths by the formation of the mixed phase structure is presumably due to a dispersion hardening of the hcp supersaturated solution which has the hardness higher than that of the amorphous phase with the same composition.

  • Creep tests were conducted under a condition of constant stress on two aluminum-based alloys containing particles: Al-5% Mg-0.25% Fe and Al-5% Zn-0.22% Fe. The role of grain boundary sliding was examined in the plane of the surface using a square grid printed on the surface by carbon deposition and perpendicular to the surface using two-beam interferometry. Estimates of the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total strain, $\varepsilon_{gbs}/\varepsilon_t$ reveal two trends; (i) the sliding contribution is consistently higher in the Al-Mg-Fe alloy, and (ii) the sliding contribution is essentially independent of strain in the Al-Mg-Fe alloy, but it shows a significant decrease with increasing strain in the Al-Zn-Fe alloy. Sliding is inhibited by the presence of particles and its contributions to the total strain are low. This inhibition is attributed to the interaction between the grain boundary dislocations responsible for sliding and particles in the boundaries.

  • The effects of Zn and Mg amounts on the solidification characteristics, microstructure, thermal conductivity and tensile strength of Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys were investigated for the development of high thermal conductivity aluminium alloys for die casting. Zn and Mg amounts in Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys had a little effect on the liquidus / solidus temperature, the latent heat for solidification and the fluidity of Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys. Thermo-physical modelling of Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys by JMatPro program showed $MgZn_2$, AlCuMgZn and Al3Fe phases on microstructure of their alloys. Increase of Zn and Mg amounts in Al-Zn-Mg-Fe alloys resulted in gradual reduction of the thermal conductivity of their alloys. Increase of Mg amounts in Al-2%Zn-Mg-Fe alloys had little effect on the tensile strength of their alloys, but increase of Mg amounts in Al-4%Zn-Mg-Fe alloys resulted in steep increase of the tensile strength of their alloys.

  • In order to improve the weak mechanical properties of cast Mg alloys, Mg-$Zn_1Y_2$ (at%) alloy powders were synthesized using gas atomization, a typical rapid solidification process. The powders consist of fine dendrite structures less than 3 ${\mu}m$ in arm spacing. In order to fabricate a bulk form, the Mg powders were compacted using magnetic pulse compaction (MPC) under various processing parameters of pressure and temperature. The effects of the processing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated.
