A Study on Toponymical Characteristics of Station Names of Seoul Metropolitan Railway System (수도권 전철 역명의 지명학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal general features and toponymical characteristics of station names of Seoul metropolitan railway system. Principal results of this study are as follows. At the present time of December, 2009, the number of station which is run is 508, the number of transfer station is 61 and the number of station which has another name is 89. Two-letter station names are 61.99%, and three-letter station names are 20.59%. Geographical names used as station name are classified into three types : administrative, physical, and human placename. In the three types, administrative placename is the most and physical placename is the least. In the administrative placename, the name of 'Dong' is the most. In the physical placename, the name of mountain is the most. In the human placename, the name of facilities is the most.

  • Automatic Train Stop (ATS) is a device that automatically stops or decelerates a train when the train exceeds the permitted speed limits or violates the signal regulations. The railway signaling system has been evolved to an automatic train control system (ATC), and is being developed into Distance-to-Go and Communication Based on Train Control (CBTC). In spite of that, the ATS system is currently being operated in Seoul Metro (line 1 and 2) and most of railway lines in Korea as well as overseas. In this study, we presents the technical methodology to prevent human errors in order to secure the safety in operation of the ATS system.

  • The integrated transit fare system of Seoul metropolitan area has given positively evaluated with reduction of user cost and activating the transfer behavior from its opening year, July 2007. However, there were only few research about railway demand forecasting methodology, especially mode share, has conducted under the integrated fare system. This study focuses on the utility estimation by each mode under the integrated fare system, and on the coefficient actualization relates on travel time and travel cost estimation with Household Travel Survey Data 2006. Also the railway demand analysis methodology under various fare systems is presented. The methodology from this study is expected to improve accuracy and usefulness in railway demand analysis.

  • Nowadays, Light railway system is attracted public attention as solution for metropolitan traffic congestion. But it is difficult to decide an appropriate light railway system. It is especially hard in the Seoul metropolitan to decide an appropriate system, because there are many factors that must considered. So we research application status of light railway system that is scheduled or promoted in the Korea and the foreign nations. And we selected systems by types of city. In this paper, we divided into 6 types of city through factor analysis and cluster. And we considered various factor such as technology, transportation, environment etc that used previous research and feasibility study. To determine the priority among the factors, AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) was applied as a method for multi-standard decision method.

A study of comparing the travel time between urban railways and arterials in the Seoul metropolitan area (수도권 교통축별 도시철도와 간선도로 승용차 이용자 통행속도 비교연구)

  • The aim of tins study is to compare the travel time of urban railway with that of arterial roads in the Seoul metropolitan area, focusing on the five main railways and arterials - Ilsan, Bundang, Kwacheon, Kyoungwon, and Kyoungin in order to make suggestions about improvements of railways. We found that the travel times of railways and arterials are about one and a half hour and an hour respectively, also the ratio of railway travel time to arterial travel time is 1.34 at peak and 1.58 at off-peak. We conclude that the competitiveness of the railroads is lower than the arterials. It will be necessary that we research the ways to improve the service of railways and investment ranking among the five main railways.

  • A diversity of railway network function enhancement projects such as the double tracking, electrification, and direct operation have been actively executed to improve the railway service. When the new rapid railway is provided, how many people will use it instead of other transports? How will the railway choice behavior be changed? Accordingly, in this paper, the applicability of diverted travel demand forecast method by Stated Preference(SP) and Transfer Price(TP) data was reviewed for Daegu metropolitan railway service. As the result of implementing the Revealed Preference(RP) and RP+SP model, the total travel time and travel cost parameters are of the right sign and are highly significant. In particular, when TP data is used as the complementary investigation of SP, the boundary value of diverted travel demand can be easily identified by railway fare and travel time service level. Therefore, it is considered that this will practically apply even in other regions as well as Daegu metropolitan railway.

  • This study shows that access to urban railway station affects the development of railway station's surrounding zone (RSSZ). For instance, the value of the property in RSSZ is likely to rise on the basis of the before and after the opening of a urban railway. Urban railway system is believed as an important solution to resolve worsening transport problems in metropolitan city. Also, the opening of a urban railway line is expected to affect the change of urban spatial structure, and to have more influence on land price of RSSZ.

  • The voltage drop is important in electric railway for feeding a huge power of train on fixed feeding area. Nowadays it is tried to operate a high speed trains on conventional lines and there is problem on the voltage drop too. It is simulated on the conditions increased the turn ratio of trolley, installed autotransformer neutral line with variable taps. In result, it is compensated the voltage drop between ATs and better on last AT, not on the position of AT. And it is decreased a return current and neutral current of AT because of unbalance between trolley and feeder. It should be studied faster and more controllable the solid state switchs instead of the mechanical one in order to utilize this system.

  • Metropolitan railway headway is calculated and decided by external conditions such as appropriate level of service and competitiveness rather than passenger demand for the peak time which is based on transport passenger capability of train. On contrast of inter-city urban railways, train time intervals of sub-urban metropolitan railway were fixed more than 20 mins in the peak time which results in low level of convenience. Big gap of headway brings a vicious circle of deteriorating competitiveness and decreasing the number of customers. Also this time gap of train interval results in stagnation of passenger demand, and makes it difficult to reduce headway. This thesis is a basic research to identify headway problems and their solutions of metropolitan railway. This thesis suggests passenger demand and the calculated standard for setting the headway, and reviews the level of passenger crowdedness, the numbers of coach for each train and time-competitiveness. At the last, thesis suggests the need for making headway by means of train services throughout benefit & cost analysis. And it also recommends the improved calculating method of setting up headway considering the different train headway standards by regional situation, flexibility in the number of coaches for a train, government policy to activate railway business and the need for setting up the standard for train service level.

Evaluation Factors for Selecting Urban Railway System (도시철도사업에서의 철도시스템 선정방안 연구)

  • Selecting an appropriate railway system in urban railway project is an important step for an efficient public transport policy. This paper attempts to solve the railway system selection problems in the (pre)feasibility study or preliminary research of urban railway project, by the rough transportation demand forecasting and financial analysis. There are two stages in this paper: in stage one, we review the worthwhile and various criteria which presented in precedent studies; whereas in stage two, an structured selection criteria is proposed for determining the appropriate railway system in urban railway project. The utilization of the proposed criteria is demonstrated with the case of a newtown in the metropolitan area. The results show that proposed criteria can be used to make the rational decision for governmental financial condition and social benefit.
