The analytical instrument method was applied to analyze malodorous sulfur compounds emitted from industrial fields. Six factories and two sites which release malodorous substances into ambient air were selected to determine the level of hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$), methylmercaptan(MeSH), dimethyl sulfide($Me_2S$), and dimethyl disulfide($Me_2S_2$) using automated thermal desorption system (STD400) and GC-FPD in summer and fall seasons of 1999. The Air sampler for ATD400 uses a small pump to draw sample and a mass flow controller to adjust sample amount without using a dilution apparatus. The trap temperature of ATD400 reached to $-80^{\circ}$ by supplying liquid nitrogen and $H_2S$ can be analyzed under this condition. The recovery rates of $H_2S$, MeSH, $Me_2S$, and $Me_2S_2$ of odorous sulfur compounds standard were shown 98.2%, 93.6%, 98.2%, 99.4% respectively. The concentrations of $Me_2S$ at outside boundary of G market, L factory, and J factory were 0.018ppm, 0.021ppm, 0.032ppm in summer, respectively. The concentration of $H_2S$ at Nanjido landfill was 1.167ppm in summer, but that of $H_2S$ was not detected in fall because of soil covering. The concentration of H2S and $Me_2S_2$ at inside of Chonggye stream were 0.564ppm and 1.045ppm in summer, while those of H2S and Me2S2 were 0.285ppm and 0.465ppm in fall, respectively.
Activated carbons were prepared from waste citrus peels using KOH, NaOH, and $ZnCl_2$ as activating chemicals. They were prepared at optimal conditions including the chemical ratio of 300%, activation time of 1.5h, and activation temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ for KOH, $700^{\circ}C$ for NaOH, and $600^{\circ}C$ for $ZnCl_2$, which were named as ACK, ACN, and ACZ, respectively. Using the activated carbons, their adsorption characteristics for three target gases such as acetone, benzene, and methylmercaptan (MM) were carried out in a batch reactor. The adsorption behavior of activated carbons for three target gases followed the Freundlich model better than the Langmuir. And the experimental kinetic data followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model more than pseudo-first-order one. Following the intraparticle diffusion model suggested that the external mass transfer and particle diffusion were occurred simultaneously during the adsorption process.

Essential oils of various plants have been known for potential biological effects such as antibacterial, antifungal, spasmolytic, antiplasmodial activities and insect-repellent property. Recently, the essential oils have attracted considerable interest in oral disease therapy. This essential oil has been known as being effective on easing sick house syndrome, giving forest aroma therapy effect and acting as repellent against pest. The essential oil of Pinus koraiensi, a native plant from Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do, was obtained by hydrodistillation. In light of its medicinal importance, in this study its composition, antibacterial activity and the reducing effect of offensive odor have been analyzed. The composition of essential oil was determined by GC and GC-MS. We have identified 14 compounds, of which 1R-${\alpha}$-pinene (19.38 %), 3-carene (10.21 %), camphene (9.82 %), limonene (9.00 %), bicyclo[2,2,1] heptan-2-ol (8.76 %) and ${\beta}$-phellandrene (7.98 %) were the main components. Essential oils from P. koraiensis, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Abies holophylla and Pinus densiflora were compared in terms of alleviating effect of malodors caused from formaldehyde, ammonia, trimethylamine and methylmercaptan. P. koraiensis essential oil was found to decrease the amounts of ammonia and trimethylamine by 75.17 % and 77.36 %, respectively. Antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, which were known as oral cavity inducer, was investigated using the paper disc agar diffusion method. The inhibition zone was observed against S. mutans (5.97 mm) and S. sobrinus (1.40 mm), respectively. P. koraiensis essential oil shown effective deodorization and inhibitory activity against oral cavity in this study might be potential material in oral sanitary industry.
This study was conducted to find out the optimal aeration rates for minimizing odor emission and for increasing biological activities during composting of livestock manure in the enclosed bench-scale reactor system. It was treated with the mixture of poultry manure and sawdust controlled the initial water content of 60%, then aerated continuously at four different aeration rates (0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 L/min/kg dry-solids). The average emitted concentration of ammonia in 0.6 L/min/kg dry-solids during composting reached the level of 40% in comparison with that of 0.2 L/min/kg dry-solids. In cases of sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, methylmercaptan and ethylmercaptan, their concentrations decreased with increasing aeration rates and the emission time was shortened. But they didn't detect in the treatment of 0.6 L/min/kg dry-solids. The biological activity for composting showed a trend of increasing as aeration rates increased. The treatment of 0.6 L/min/kg dry-solids gave the highest biological activity and the best compost quality.
Adsorption experiments of three target gases such as acetone, benzene, and methyl mercaptan (MM) were carried in a continuous reactor using the activated carbon prepared from waste citrus peel. In a single gas system, the breakthrough time obtained from using the activated carbon (WCAC) prepared from waste citrus peel. In a single gas system, the breakthrough time obtained from the breakthrough curve decreased with increasing the inlet concentration and flow rate, but increased with respect to the aspect ratio (L/D). Adsorbed amounts of the target gases by WCAC increased as a function of the inlet concentration and aspect ratio. However, adsorbed amounts with the increase of the flow rate were different depending upon target gases. Results from the breakthrough time and adsorbed amount showed that the affinity for WCAC was the highest in benzene, followed by acetone and then MM. On the other hand, in the binary and ternary systems, the breakthrough curve showed a roll-up phenomenon where the adsorbate having a small affinity for WCAC was replaced with the adsorbate with a high affinity. The adsorption of acetone on WCAC was more strongly affected when mixing with the nonpolar benzene than that of using sulfur compound MM.
Disposal of food garbage in most large cities is very troublesome task. To date, microbiological treatment has been received an attention as a garbage decomposition process. In this study, the inoculation effect of some cellulase, amylase and protease-producing bacteria and photosynthetic bacteria on food garbage treatment was examined. They were added into a treatment reactor specially designed in this study together with food garbage and incubated in various conditions for 15 days and the removals of food garbage and foul smell produced during the treatment were analyzed. Average decomposition percentages of the inoculated food garbage in treatment reactor were 11 and 18.8% under intermittent aeration (once in a day) and continuous aeration conditions (2 L/min), respectively, and these were higher than removal percentages in the corresponding uninoculated reactors,3.4 and 13.8%. Optimal pH and temperature for food garbage decomposition by inoculated bacteria were pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$. Maximal decomposition percentage in the inoculated food garbage was 35% under the optimal condition (pH 7, $30^{\circ}C$, and continuous aeration). The malodor compounds generated from food garbage treatment such as complex foul smell and sulfur compounds were effectively reduced about 84% and 25.5%, respectively, with a biofilter composed of purple nonsulfur bacteria trapped in sponge. This decomposing capability of food garbage by these bacteria can be utilized for the rapid and efficient treatment of food garbage.
