  • This study assessed the characteristics of emission and cell toxicology of Methylethylketone(MEK) in ambient air of industrial area. MEK is produced by the oxidation of sec-butyl alcohol and used as the solvent for making ink, printing, coating of film, bonding material and drug extraction. The MEK concentrations in the ambient-air of industrial area in Gimhae City was detected in the range of $25.4{\sim}1,580{\mu}g/m^3$ with an average $297.4{\mu}g/m^3$. The concentration of MEK showed a descending tendency from April to August followed by its increased tendency since then. The effects of MEK on the human lung cancer A549 cells was examined by the generation of Reactive Oxygen Species(ROS) and cytotoxicity. The range of MEK concentration detected in the area induced ROS generation affecting the oxidation state with a little effects on the viability of the cells.

  • The kinetics of photocatalytic degradation of gaseous acetaldehyde and methylethylketone(MEK) were studied by the batch scale of photo-reactor. Variable parameters were initial concentration of acetaldehyde and MEK, water vapor content, and temperature. The photocatalytic degradation rate was increased with increasing concentration of acetaldehyde and MEK, but maintained gentle increase beyond a certain concentration. The Langmuir-Hinselwood model was successfully applied to correlate experimental data. Water vapor inhibited the degradation reaction of acetaldehyde and MEK. The optimum reaction temperature was $45^{\circ}C$ for acetaldehyde and MEK.

  • Separation of MEK(methylethylketone) was carried out experimentally by a flat membrane contactor using a variety of extracting organic compounds. A correlation equation of Sherwood number was determined in terms of Reynolds number and Schmidt number for the flat membrane contactor system. This correlation equation was applied to get theoretically the overall mass transfer coefficient of MEK: it was compared to the experimental one. It was found that they are in good agreement.

  • The degradation of methylethylkeone(MEK) was investigated by the continuous single module photocatalytic reactor. Operational conditions were initial concentration of MEK, intensity of photon flux, and activity change according to the long time operation. The photocatalytic degradation was decreased with the increase of MEK concentration, and the degree of decrease was larger at higher flow rate. Removal efficiency of photocatalytic reactor was decreased with the increase of reactor diameter and lamp wavelength under the same residence time condition. Continuous single module photocatalytic reactor was successfully operated without any activity drop during 120hrs operation.

  • Adsorption experiments of binary mixed gases composed of acetone/methylethylketone (MEK), MEK/benzene, MEK/toluene, and benzene/toluene were carried out on activated carbon fixed-bed. The variations of equilibrium adsorption capacity according to type and fraction of binary gas were investigated. In case of binary gases composed of acetone/MEK and benzene/toluene, equilibrium adsorption capacities of MEK and toluene were increased according to the increase of fraction of MEK and toluene, but equilibrium adsorption capacities of acetone and benzene were decreased. In case of binary gases composed of MEK/benzene and MEK/toluene, equilibrium adsorption capacities of benzene and toluene were increased according to the increase of fraction of benzene and toluene, but equilibrium adsorption capacities of MEK was decreased.

  • Adsorption/desorption characteristics of low concentration methylethylketone(MEK) and toluene vapors in beds packed with activated carbon fibers(ACF) was investigated. Performance of ACF adsorption was characterized by the equilibrium capacity, time to reach equilibrium and desorption efficiency. Experiments were carried out to define the effect of operation variables, such as feed concentration, flow rate, moisture content and bed height. The breakthrough time was shorten with the increase of temperature, flow rate and feed concentration. In addition, an increase of packed height of adsorbents lengthen the breakthrough time. The ACF loaded with MEK and toluene was satisfactorily regenerated by programed heating. It is observed that MEK is more easily removed than toluene at below temperature of $150^{\circ}C$.

  • The objective of this research is to improve adsorption efficiency of adsorbent made from MSWI (Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator) ny ash by $HNO_3$ activation. The acidity and the basicity were determined by Boehm's method and the surface structure was studied by BET method with N2 adsorption. The adsorption properties were investigated with benzene and MEK (Methylethylketone). $HNO_3$ activation can modify the surface property of an adsorbent such as specific surface area, pore volume, and functional group. According to the results, the specific surface area of the adsorbent was increased from $309.2m^2/g\;to\;553.2 m^2/g$ by activation. Also oxygen-containing functional groups were formed on it.

  • The objective of this research is to improve the adsorption capacity of adsorbent made from MSWI (Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator) fly ash by surface oxidation. Used oxidation agents were $HNO_{3}$, $H_{2}SO_{4}$ and $(NH_{4})_{2}S_{2}O_{8}$. These agents can modify the surface property of an adsorbent such as specific surface area, pore volume, and functional group. The surface structure was studied by BET method with $N_{2}$ adsorption. The acid value and base value were determined by Boehm's method. The adsorption properties were investigated with benzene and MEK (Methylethylketone). According to the results, the specific surface area of the adsorbent was increased from 309.2 $m^{2}$/g to 553.2 $m^{2}$/g by $HNO_{3}$ oxidation. But $H_{2}SO_{4}$ and $(NH_{4})_{2}S_{2}O_{8}$ oxidation was decreased slightly. After Oxidation, surface acid value increased, but base value decreased. FAA-N shows the highest acid value. The content of oxygen increased greatly and oxygen group was created on the adsorbent surface. The surface oxidation improved the adsorbing capacity for MEK. The amount of adsorbing MEK was increased from 189 $m^{2}$/g to 639 $m^{2}$/g by $HNO_{3}$ oxidation.

  • An equivalent retention has been experimentally observed in thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF) for different polymer-solvent systems. It is shown that iso-retention between two sets of polymer-solvent systems can be obtained by adjusting the temperature difference (ΔT) according to the difference in the ratio of ordinary diffusion coefficient to thermal diffusion coefficient. This method uses a compensation of field strength (ΔT) in ThFFF at a fixed condition of cold wall temperature. It is applied for the calculation of molecular weight of polymers based on a calibration run of different standards obtained at an adjusted AT. The polymer standards used in this study are polystyrene (PS), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF). Three carrier solvents, tetrahydrofuran (THF), methylethylketone (MEK) and ethylacetate (ETAc) were employed. Though the accuracy in the calculation of molecular weight is dependent on the difference in the slope of log λ vs. log M which is related to Mark-Houwink constant a, it shows reasonable agreement within about 6% of relative error in molecular weight calculation for the polymer-solvent systems having similar a value.
