Differential pulse polarographic(DPP) analytical procedure for the rifampicin antibiotic, which can be applied to monitor its synthetic process from the starting antibiotic of rifamycin B or rifamycin SV has been developed based on the electrochemical reduction of an azomethine group. Rifampicin exhibited a cathodic peak due to the azomethine group in the side chain of 3-[(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)imino]methyl moiety and another cathodic peak due to the carbonyl group in rifamycin SV by DPP. The experimental peak potential shift of an azomethine reduction was -73 mV/pH in the pH range between 3.0 and 7.5, agreeing with involvement of 4 e-and 5 $H^5$ in its reduction. By the cyclic voltammetric(CV) studies, the azomethine and the carbonyl reductions in rifampicin were processed irreversibly on the mercury electrode. The plot of peak currents vs. concentrations of rifampicin ranging $1.0{\times}10^{-7} M~$1.0{\times}10^{-5} M yielded a straight line with a correlation coefficient of 0.9996. The detection limit was $1.0{\times}10^{-8} M with a modulation amplitude of 50 mV DPP has been successfully applied for the determination of rifampicin in the pharmaceutical preparations.

The purpose of our study was to develop the fabrication method of porous diatomite ceramics with a porosity gradient by centrifugal molding. The processing variables of centrifugal molding were derived from Stoke's law of sedimentation, which were the radius of the particles, the acceleration due to centrifugal molding and the dynamic viscosity of the slurry. And these could be controlled by ball-milling conditions, centrifugal conditions, and the addition of methyl cellulose, respectively. The effects of processing conditions on the gradient pore structure of diatomite were investigated by particle size analysis, scanning electron microscope, and mercury porosimeter.
This study evaluates the protective effects of Korean garlic juice against the toxicity of methyl mercuric chloride (MMC) in relation to fetal ossification in pregnant Fischer 344 rats. This study has as its basis, both theory and data that neutral amino acids in garlic juice have protective effects against mercury poisoning. Pregnant rats were dosed in various combination with 20 mg MMC/kg body wt. and 0.5 or 1.0 garlic juice/kg body wt. on the 7th day of gestation. Fetuses were extracted from the dams on 20th day of gestation, and the fetal bones were stained and measured. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Fetal body weights, body lengths, and head length were significantly decreased by as much as 23.5%, 21.3%, 15.5% respectively in 20 mg/wt kg methyl mercuric chloride groups (p<0.05). But in the garlic treated groups, they were almost similar to the controls. 2. The ossification centers were significantly decreased by as much as 35.1% in pelvic phalanges, 53.5% in pectoral phalanges, 74.1% in ternebrae, 76.2% in tail in 20 mg/wt kg methyl mercuric chloride groups (p<0.05). But in the garlic treated groups, they were significantly increased by as much as $81.2{\sim}88.7%$ and $94.8{\sim}98.9%$ of controls. 3. The ossified pectoral girdles were significantly decreased by as much as 66.6% in clavicle, and in other areas $74.2{\sim}87.4%$ in the 20 mg/wt kg methyl mercuric chloride groups (p<0.05). But in the garlic treated groups, they were significantly increased by as much as $81.2{\sim}88.7%$ and $94.8{\sim}98.9%$ of the controls. 4. The ossified pelvic girdles were significantly decreased by as much as 57.1% and 56.1% in two ischium, $67.2{\sim}81.7%$ in metacarpals in the 20 mg/wt kg methyl mercuric chloride groups (p<0.05). But in the garlic treated groups, they were significantly increased by as much as $67.0{\sim}85.6%$ and $90.1{\sim}98.7%$ of the controls. 5. The ossified terenebrae were unchanged or significantly decreased; 0.0% in 5th, 54.1% in 1st, 83.9% in 2nd, 75.0% in 3rd, 72.7% in 4th, 79.8% in 6th of 20 mg/wt kg methyl mercuric chloride groups (p<0.05). But in the garlic treated groups, they were significantly increased by as much as $29.5{\sim}55.1%$ and $54.5{\sim}84.0%$ of the controls. 6. The ossified ribs were significantly decreased by as much as $8.3{\sim}18.0%$ in 20 mg/wt kg methyl mercuric chloride groups (p<0.05). But in the garlic treated groups, they were significantly increased by as much as $87.1{\sim}93.5%$ and $96.3{\sim}99.7%$ of the controls. In conclusion, Korean garlic juice significantly protected against the toxicity of MMC in relation to the fetal ossification in pregnant rats.
For the separation of boron isotopes, aminated polystyrenedivinylbenzene ion-exchange resins were prepared by chloromethylation of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer (DVB 10%), followed by the reaction of methylamine. During the preparation of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer, heptane for the porous resin and toluene for the non-porous resin were used as diluent, and the pore volume of the resins was determined by mercury porosimeter. In both water and aqueous alcohol solutions, the distribution coefficient of boric acid was decreased in accordance with increasing the alcohol concentration and the number of carbon atoms in the alcohol molecules. As a result of separatioin of boron isotope with nonporous and porous resin in water solvent, the separation efficiency of porous resin is better than that of the nonporous, and the result in both water and 50% methyl alcohol solvent relevant to nonporous resin indicated that the latter was better than the former.

To investigate the neurotoxic effect of organic chloride on cultured mouse cerebral neurons, cytotoxic effect was measured by MTT assay after cultured cerebral neurons were incubated with various concentrations of methyl mercuric chloride(MMC) for 24 hours. The protective effect of Radix Polygoni Multiflori(RPM) on MMC-induced neurotoxicity was also examined in these cultures. MMC decreased cell viability of cultured mouse cerebral neurons remarkably in a dose- and time-dependent manners. In protective effect of RPM it was remarkably effective in blocking the neuroxicity induced by MMC. From aboved the results, it is suggested that MMC induce neurotoxicity, and the herba extract, RPM is very effective in preventing MMC-induced cytotoxicity on cultured mouse cerebral neurons.

Methylmercury (MeHg), one of the heavy metal compound, can cause severe damage to the central nervous system in humans. Many reports have contributed MeHg poisoning to contaminated foods and release into the environment. Despite many studies on the pathogenesis of MeHg-induced central neuropathy, no useful mechanism of toxicity has been established. To find genes differentially expressed by MeHg in neuronal cell, we peformed forward and reverse suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) method on mRNA derived from neuroblastoma cell line, SH-SY5Y treated with solvent (DMSO) and 6.25 uM (IC$\sub$50/) MeHg. Differentially expressed CDNA clones were sequenced and the mRNAs were re-examined on Northern blots. These sequences were identified by BLAST homology search to known genes or expressed sequence tags (ESTs). Analysis of these sequences has provided an insight into the biological effects of MeHg in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease and a possibility to develop more efficient and exact monitoring system of heavy metals as common environmental pollutants.
The seasonal occurrence trends of the brown-winged green bug, Plautia stali, and the brown malmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, were monitored in sweet persimmon orchards in southern region of Korea using light traps (in 2000 and 2001), and aggregation pheromone traps (methyl (E, E, Z)-2 ,4, 6-decatrienoate)) of P. stali (in 2001). Light trap data showed that H. halys started to occur from the end of June, and reached its peak in early or mid August, while P. stali was mostly attracted to the traps from mid July to late August without any distinct attraction peak. Both species did not occur after September in the persimmon orchards studied. The attraction patterns of both species to aggregation pheromone traps were different from those observed in light traps. Both species were attracted to the pheromone traps from mid May to late August. The peak occurrence of H. halys could not be detected due to low catches. However, the period of peak attraction for P. stali was from late June to late August depending on the geographical locations. The aggregation pheromone traps of P. stali attracted more number of P stali than H. hails, but the light traps showed a reverse pattern. In both species, more females were attracted to the aggregation pheromone traps than males. The difference of attraction patterns between 2 types of traps was discussed in relation to content of soluble tannin in persimmon fruits.
A total of 100 seafoods commonly consumed in Gyeonggi-do were investigated to determine the concentration of lead (Pb), total mercury (Hg), methyl mercury (MeHg), cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se). Concentration of heavy metals and selenium was measured by using mercury analyzer, ICP-MS and GC-ECD. The average content (mg/kg) of heavy metals in the seafood samples was as follows; Pb 0.0915 (0.0021-0.4490), Cd 0.0084 (ND-0.1773), and Hg 0.0412 (0.0013-0.3032). All the levels were below the recommended standards of the MFDS in Pb (0.5 mg/kg), Cd (0.2 mg/kg), Hg (0.5 mg/kg). The methylmercury was detected in the hairtail (0.0677 mg/kg) and cod (0.2941 mg/kg). After the average content of heavy metals in seafood was determined, the exposure assessment for heavy metals was conducted. Relative hazardous levels compared to PTWI were lower than the official standards of the JECFA for Pb (0.97%), Hg (3.42%) Cd (0.45%). In conclusion, the levels presented in this study are presumed to be safe for consumption.
The standards for heavy metal levels in crustaceans are 0.5 mg/kg and 1.0 mg/kg or lower for lead and cadmium, respectively. Further, the contamination levels of arsenic, mercury, methyl mercury, and tin are being continuously investigated, considering their current exposure levels. Shrimps are potentially exposed to heavy metals because they inhabit areas with abundant organic matter, such as sandy or muddy shores, places with a lot of seaweed, and estuaries. This study measured the monetary value of reducing consumer anxiety and increasing consumer confidence if the government prohibits the sale of shrimp species that exceed the threshold for specific heavy metals and of the top shrimp species for which no threshold for heavy metals is specified. We derived consumer willingness-to-pay (WTP). Combining the estimated WTP with the number of households in the country, the total value of benefits was estimated to be 363.9 billion won. The results of this study will provide an important empirical finding, showing to what extent specific policies regarding heavy metals in seafood can alleviate consumer anxiety and provide psychological reassurance.

The complexations and selectivities of the 10 species of mono- and dimethylsubstituted anilinium ions with 18-crown-6 in methanol are examined at dropping mercury electrode. The stability constants of these complexes varies drastically due to the steric hindrance by the positions and numbers of methyl groups. And the analyses of the isomeric mixtures of methylanilinium, which are impossible to detect due to the overlapped peaks in normal conditions, were also accomplished by the additions of 18-crown-6 as the supporting complexing agent using the selective complexations by the steric hindrance effects. As results in case of the difference of stability, ${\Delta}log\;K$ were about 0.7~1.3, it was possible to confirm the existence of two species qualitatively. Otherwise when ${\Delta}log\;K$ were large than 1.6, the quantitative determinations of each species could be accomplished sucessfully. From these results it is deduced that the selective recongnition of the positions and numbers of methyl groups as the steric hindrance in anililniums by 18-crown-6 cause the large variation of the magnitudes of negative shift of reduction waves for guest ions in mixtures.
