Two types of poly(n-butyl acrylate) copolymer/silicate nanocomposites have been produced: poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) [P(BA-co-MMA)]/silicate nanocomposites and poly(n-butyl acrylate-co-styrene) [P(BA-co-ST)]/silicate nanocomposites. The P(BA-co-MMA)/silicate nanocomposites shows the exfoliated structures but a P(BA-co-ST)/silicate nanocomposites have intercalated structures, because the BA/MMA comonomer has a higher polarity (e-value in Q-e scheme) than the BA/ST comonomer. The BA/MMA comonomer expanded the interlayer space of the silicate wider than did the BA/ST comonomer. The thermal degradation onset point of the P(BA-co-MMA)/silicate nanocomposites was 43$^{\circ}C$ higher than that of pure P(BA-co-MMA). P(BA-co-MMA)T5%, P(BA-co-MMA)T10%, and P(BA-co-MMA)T20% exhibit 134,302, and 195% increases, respectively, in their storage moduli at -20$^{\circ}C$ relative to the pure copolymer.

The Purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the monomer ratio on properties of the polymer-modified mortars using methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate latexes, and to obtain basic data necessary to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. This paper deals with the effect of the monomer ratio on the typical properties of polymer-modified mortars with methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate latexes. The polymer latex-modified mortars are prepared with 5, 10, IS and 20% of polymer cement ratio respectively, and properties of modified mortars such as water absorption, compressive and flexural strengths, chloride-ion penetration depth are tested. The test results indicate that the monomer ratio is very important factors to characterize the strength properties of polymer-modified mortars, but the water absorption and chloride-ion penetration depth are influenced by polymer-cement ratio rather than monomer ratios.

Time-Of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are the useful instruments to measure nanostructures of material surfaces. Surface pattern formation in blending homopolymer and diblock copolymer films was investigated as a function of film thickness and annealing conditions. In this study, surface structures of blending homopolymer [deuterated polystyrene (Mn 20,000), poly (methyl methacrylate) (Mn 18,000)] and diblock copolymer [Poly (deuteratedstyrene(d8)-b-methyl methacrylate) (Mn 19,500-18,100)] films were observed. The AFM result indicated that the nanostructures and film thickness depended on temperature, concentration and solvent. TOF-SIMS depth profiling was obtained for the lamellar morphology of symmetric dPS-b-PMMA which is found to orient parallel to the surface of the substrate. Elemental and molecular depth profiles measured in the negative ion mode by a Cs+ primary ion beam demonstrate variations in hydrogen, deuterium, carbon, oxygen, hydrocarbons and deuterated hydrocarbons within the diblock copolymer according to the depth.
Kinetics of termonomer emulsion polymerization during interval II (i.e, after completion of latex particle formation) were studied through pseudo-homopolymerization (PHP) method. Extended Smith-Ewart equation and equation of instantaneous polymer composition are respectively reduced to the corresponding equation for homopolymerization by defining average rate constants. Average number of radicals per particle and instantaneous polymer compositions were respectively predicted by varying termonomer composition within latex particles for systems containing no more than one growing radical per particle. Styrene-Methyl methacrylate-Acrylonitrile (SMA) system was used for model calculation.

Poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposite particles with particle size of 275${\sim}$292 nm range were successfully prepared using emulsion polymerization. The content of montmorillonite based on the methyl methacrylate monomer was chosen as 30 wt.%. 2,2-azobis(isobuthylamidine hydrochloride) and n-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride were used as an initiator and a surfactant in cationic emulsion system. Potassium persulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate were used as an initiator and a surfactant in anionic emulsion system. The evidence of intercalated /exfoliated structure of montmorillonite in the nanocomposite prepared in our experiment was confirmed by wide angle x-ray diffraction patterns of $d_{001}$ plane. Thermal behavior of nanocomposite was traced using DSC and TGA. It was found that the nanocomposite particle prepared by cationic emulsion system showed intercalated structured. We also found that the nanocomposite particle obtained from anionic emulsion system resulted in the fully exfoliated structure.
Herein, macroporous carbon materials were readily prepared by carbonization of cured body of resorcinol and formaldehyde using poly(methyl methacrylate) colloid microspheres which were employed as the template in the gelation of resorcinol with formaldehyde. The gel in the water was solvent exchanged with methanol and the wet gel was dried. After carbonization of the template-gel composite at $800^{\circ}C$, it was found that pores were left corresponding to the size of the template, yielding carbon materials with a fine porous structure with enlarged surface area and significant porosity. Properties of the carbon foams including the structure, morphology, thermal stability, and porosity were investigated. Finally, it was concluded that the method using polymer colloids as the template provided a facile route to prepare carbon foams.

Transesterification reactions (methyl methacrylate with diethanolamine, ethylene glycol with dimethylphthalate) were kinetically investigated in the presence of zinc compound catalysts at $120{\sim}170^{\circ}C$ The amount of reactants was measured by gas chromatography. and the reaction rates also measured from the amount of reaction products and reactants upon each catalyst. The transesterification reactions were carried out under the first order conditions respect to the concentration of reactants, respectively, The overall reaction order was 2nd. The apparent rate constant (k') was found to obey first kinetics with respect to the concentration of catalyst. It shows that according to an increase in basicity of anionic species the rate constant increase, and that a linear relationship exists between ln k and pKa in transesterification reaction of methyl methacrylate with diethanolamine.

PMMA has been used extensively worldwide as industrial and construction materials due to its excellent material properties. When PMMA is subject to thermal degradation, unit of monomers are detached from polymer chain and this phenomena is called unzip reaction. Therefore, PMMA thermally degrades into its monomer. Characteristics of thermal degradation of PMMA has been investigated using TGA in this research as a basic study for recovery of MMA.

Ethylene was polymerized with a catalyst having sterically hindered pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand, $Cp^{\ast}_{2}ZrCl_{2}/MAO$, and the polymerization mixture were treated with dry oxygen (oxidative workup) to produce hydroxyl-terminated polyethylenes (PE-OH). Polyethylene-block-Poly (${\Box}-caprolactone$) was synthesized from PE-OH and ${\cdot}\^{A}-caprolactone$A by using stannous octoate as a catalyst for ring opening polymerization of ${\cdot}\^{A}-caprolactone$. Polyethylene-block-Poly(methyl methacrylate) was obtained by transforming the hydroxyl-terminated polyethylenes to macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and by reacting them with MMA.

The carboxylated MWNTs were successfully prepared by conventional acid treatment, and their structures were confirmed by FT-IR, Raman and TEM analysis. The water-dispersibility of the surface modified WNTs were good. The COOH-MWNT will show better stability during the emulsion polymerization as compared with Pristine MWNT. In-situ emulsion polymerizations of methyl methacrylate N(MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (BA) were carried out. Aggregate size and dispersion stability of the CNTs in water phase were measured using dynamic light scattering, turbidity, UV-visible spectrophotometer, and electron microscope. In addition, thermo-mechanical properties of MWNT/polymer nanocomposites were investigated.
