  • DOHC gasoline engine(4-cylinder in line type, 1600cc) is modified for the experiment to develope an alternative fuel. The modified engine is tested with the various combination of gasoline and methanol. Pollutant emissions of CO and HC are measured at the end of exhaust manifold. The concentration of CO and HC in exhaust gas is greatly reduced with the increase of coolant temperature of engine. HC concentration is reduced until methanol content reaches to thirty percent and then increased with the volumetric percentage of methanol in fuel. On the other hand, the concentration of CO is reduced as the methanol centent is increased up to 20 percent and then it becomes constant even though the methanol content is raised. The effect of engine RPM on the HC and CO exhaust is investigated. HC concentration is reduced as the engine RPM is increased but the typical trends of variation are not found in the measured value of CO concentrations.

  • The results of simulation of direct methane fuel cell fed with liquid-state methanol feed are shown. This numerical process is based on mass and current conservation equations. The results showed that over low current density $(<200mA/cm^2)$ IV polarization curve was well-presented compared to experimental result. Methanol fed from anodic side moved into cathodic side through electrolyte membrane and the pressure near cathode electrode increased according to amount of methanol crossover and production of water. Besides change of overpotential on each el electrode were checked by x-axis.

  • Recently, air pollution and energy security problems have necessitated the development of alternative fuel vehicles. As an alternative fuel vehicle FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle) which can be operated by and mixture between gasoline and M85(methanol 85% and gasoline 15% by vol. percent) has been drawing great attention. But poor cold startability of high methanol- content fuel which is characteristic of lower fuel volatility and higher latent heat of vaporization than gasoline is one of the major problems to be solved for the development of FFV. In this paper, important factors influencing cold startability of general S.I. engines are described. And, so-me cost-effective and practical methods were investigated in view of the optimization of fuel-ing parameters and ignition system for M85 fuel. The test results showed good startability up to (-22)-(-23).deg.C.

  • The displacement of carbon black to polypyrrole as a catalyst supporter in the fuel electrode of a direct methanol fuel cell was investigated. Polypyrrole was obtained as a black powder by the chemical polymerization of pyrrole with three different oxidants. The synthesized polypyrroles were pasted on carbon paper and transformed to the fuel electrodes with electrochemically deposited platinum. The prepared fuel electrode was assembled and mounted in a unit cell using a membrane and cathodic electrode film. In comparison with the carbon black fuel electrode, the performance of the unit cell was analyzed in relation to the state of the catalyst, the type of oxidant, and the morphology of the polypyrrole powder.

  • Two types of Pt nanoparticle electrocatalysts were composited on Pt nanowires by a combination of an electrospinning method and an impregnation method with NaBH4 as a reducing agent. The structural properties and electrocatalytic activities for methanol electro-oxidation in direct methanol fuel cells were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and cyclic voltammetry. In particular, SEM, HRTEM, XRD, and XPS results indicate that the metallic Pt nanoparticles with polycrystalline property are uniformly decorated on the electro-spun Pt nanowires. In order to investigate the catalytic activity of the Pt nanoparticles decorated on the electro-spun Pt nanowires, two types of 20 wt% Pt nanoparticles and 40 wt% Pt nanoparticles decorated on the electro-spun Pt nanowires were fabricated. In addition, for comparison, single Pt nanowires were fabricated via an electrospinning method without an impregnation method. As a result, the cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry results demonstrate that the electrode containing 40 wt% Pt nanoparticles exhibits the best catalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation and the highest electrochemical stability among the single Pt nanowires, the 20 wt% Pt nanoparticles decorated with Pt nanowires, and the 40 wt% Pt nanoparticles decorated with Pt nanowires studied for use in direct methanol fuel cells.

  • Direct methanol fuel cell based on a proton-exchange membrane electrolyte was investigated. 60% Pt-Ru/C and 60%Pt/C catalysts were employed for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction, respectively. Morphologies of the catalysts were investigated by x-ray power diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and transmission microscopy. Electrochemical characteristics of the catalysts were tested by using cyclic voltametry technique. I-V characteristics of the fuel cell were tested by changing methanol concentration, temperature, and Nafion type as a proton-exchange membrane electrolyte. AC impedance technique was used to investigate the electrochemical performance of the fuel cell. The performance of single cell was enhance with increasing cell temperature. High operation temperature attributed to the combined effects of the reduction of ohmic resistance and polarization. High cell voltage was obtained from the concentration of 205M methanol. With Nafion 112, a current density of $230mA/cm^2$ at 0.55V was obtained from the concentration of 2.5M methanol.

  • In direct methanol fuel cells(DMFCs), it is well known that methanol crossover severely reduces the cell performance and the cell efficiency. There are a number of design and operating parameters that influence the methanol crossover. This indicates that a DMFC demands a high degree of optimization. For the successful design and operation of a DMFC system, a better understanding of methanol crossover phenomena is essential. The main objective of this study is to examine methanol-crossover phenomena in DMFCs. In this study, 1D DMFC model previously developed by Ko et al. is used. The simulation results were compared with methanol-crossover data that were measured by Eccarius et al. The numerical predictions agree well with the methanol crossover data and the model successfully captures key experimental trends.

  • In previous study, diesel-methanol stratified injection system is manufactured and applied to a D.I. diesel engine in order to realize combustion improvement using methanol, which is oxygenated fuel with large latent heat. We know that NOx and soot is reduced by stratified injection of diesel fuel-methanol. Therefore, in the present study, combustion diagnosis using optical measurement is tried to make clear effect of methanol on simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot. Two-color method is used to measure flame temperature and KL value, which is approximately proportional to the soot consentration along the optical path. Laser induced scattering method was used to measure distribution of soot at two dimensional area. Also, it is compared exhaust characteristics of NOx and soot with results of optical measurement.

  • In recent years, the study about the high efficiency and low fuel consumption of the internal conbustion engine has been mainly proceeding. To achieve these goals, the improvement of combustion process in Sl engine and the use of substitute energy are suggested. When the methanol blend fuel Is used, the combustion rate of the initial ignition is diminishing by high latent evaporation of methanol. But it attracts the attention because of the high octane number, and lean mixture peculiarity. Considering these facts, the gasoline-methanol blend fuel In engine operation has been used to compare and analyze the pressure development, rate of heat release, mass burned fraction, and combustion process. The results of experiment show the power increase, lean combustion and low harmful component of emission.

  • This paper describes the investigation of combustion characteristics of gasoline-methanol blend in constant volume combustion chamber. A constant volume combustion chamber was used to elucidate a basic combustion characteristics and the premixer was installed to control temperature and equivalence ratio. And the maximum pressure, combustion duration and flame propagation according to the evaporation rate were measured to determine the optimal temperature range for evaporating a blend fuel. These experimental results indicate that the combustion characteristics such as combustion chamber pressure and combustion were deteriorated by decreasing surrounding temperature of fuel. These experimental results indicate that the combustion characteristics such as combustion chamber pressure and combustion were deter orated by decreasing surrounding temperature of fuel injected. It was also found that the overall gasification process for methanol blend fuel was influenced by a combustion chamber temperature rather than a premixer temperature.
