Recently, the use of formic acid as a fuel for direct liquid fuel cells has emerged as a promising alternative to methanol. In the work presented herein, we evaluated direct formic acid fuel cells(DFAFCs) with various components under operating conditions, for example, the thickness of the proton exchange membrane, concentration of formic acid, gas diffusion layer, and commercial catalyst. The thickness of the proton exchange membrane influenced performance related to the fuel cross-over. To optimize the cell performance, we investigated on the proper concentration of formic acid and catalyst for the formic acid oxidation. Consequently, membrance-electrode assembly(MEA) consisted of $Nafion^{(R)}$-115 and the Pt-Ru black as a anode catalyst showed the maximum performance. This performance was superior to the DMFCs' one.

Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIPs) membranes were prepared by UV polymerization to separate racemates with opposite physiological activity, and then its separation selectivity of racemates was carried out. Likewise, their properties were examined. Polycarbonate (PC) membrane was polymerized as small spot form in pore inner wall, but anodisc (AD) membrane was polymerized as film form with thickness 500~700 nm onto the membrane surface. Also the study on the separation selectivity of prepared MIPs membranes was carried out in L-Tryptophane (Trp) racemate solution. The results showed that AD MIPs membrane polymerized as a film form, which was achieved by solution polymerizaion consisting of over 90% cross-linking agent (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate; EGDMA) and under 30% dispersing agent (methanol; MeOH), had predominant 3.5 selectivity.

The development and performance of a competitive indirect immunoassay for the quantitative measurement of polychlorinated biphenyl compounds in insulating oils is presented. Reagent preparation and the assay characterisation, optimisation and validation steps are described. The dynamic range of the assay for Aroclors 1254 and 1260 in methanol was $50-800 {\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ with $50\%$ signal inhibition values of 217 and $ 212 {\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ respectively. Impending legislation in the UK is likely to decree that oils containing $ >50 {\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ PCB be considered contaminated. Assay sensitivity increased with the degree of PCB chlorination. The assay of structurally related compounds of environmental concern yielded cross-reactivity values of under $0.6\%$. The immunoassay proved reliable for the analysis of transformer oils containing $>70{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ PCB, but over-estimated PCB levels in oils containing $<20{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ of the analyte with the oils requiring pre-treatment using either solid-phase extraction techniques or washing with KOH-ethanol/sulphuric acid to remove matrix interferents. The analytical performance of the assay was compared against a commercially available semi-quantitative immunoassay kit for PCBs in soil and water.
Methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction was studied over MWW zeolite with independently developed two pores (circular and straight) and MFI zeolite with intercrossed sinusoidal and straight pores in order to investigate the effect of pore structure on their catalytic behavior. MWW and MFI zeolites with similar acidity exhibited commonly high conversion and slow deactivation in the MTO reaction, but their product selectivities were considerably different: linear hydrocarbons of $C_3-C_9$ were mainly produced on MWW, while the yield of $C_2{^=}$ and aromatics were high on MFI. Polyaroamatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were accumulated on MWW, but a small amount of benzene and aromatics on MFI. The impregnation of phosphorous on MWW caused significant decreases in the catalytic activity and toluene adsorption, but the decreases were relatively small on MFI. Although the straight pores of MWW were inactive in the MTO reaction due to the accumulation of PAHs, its circular pores which suppressed the formation of PAHs sustained catalytic activity for the production of linear hydrocarbons. Therefore, the impregnation of phosphorous on the circular pores of MWW caused a significant decrease in catalytic activity. The phosphorous impregnation on the cross sections of MFI altered the product selectivity due to the neutralization of strong acid sites, but catalytic deactivation was negligible. The difference of MWW and MFI zeolites in the MTO reaction was explained by their difference in pore structure.

Methylovorus sp. strain SS1 DSM 11726 was found to grow continuously when it was transferred from 30$\^{C}$ to 40$\^{C}$ and 43$\^{C}$. A shift in growth temperature from 30$\^{C}$ to 45$\^{C}$, 47$\^{C}$ and 50$\^{C}$ reduced the viability of the cell population by more than 10$^2$, 10$^3$and 10$\^$5/ folds, respectively, after 1h cultivation. Cells transferred to 47$\^{C}$ and 50$\^{C}$ after preincubation for 15 min at 43$\^{C}$, however, exhibited 10-fold increase in viability. It was found that incubation for 15 min at 40$\^{C}$ of Methylovorus sp. strain SSl grown at 30$\^{C}$ was sufficient to accelerate the synthesis of a specific subset of proteins. The major heat shock proteins had apparent molecular masses of 90, 70, 66, 60, and 58 kDA. The 60 and 58 kDa proteins were found to cross-react with the antiserum raised against GroEL protein. The heat shock response persisted for over 1h. The shock proteins were stable for 90 min in the cell. Exposure of the cells to methanol induced proteins identical to the heat shock proteins. Addition of ethanol induced a unique protein with a molecular mass of about 40 kDa in addition to the heat-induced proteins. The proteins induced in paraquat-treated cells were different from the heat shock proteins, except the 70 and 60 kDa proteins.
Losartan potassium, 2-butyl-4-chloro-1-[p-(o-1H-tetrazol-5-ylphenyl)benzyl]imidazole-5-methanol mono-potassium salt, is a new class of antihypertensive agents, and is an antagonist in angiotensin receptor. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the bioequivalence of two Losartan potassium tablets, Cozaar tablet (MSD Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.) and Losata tablet (Kyung Dong Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.), according to the guidelines of the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). The release of losartan from the two losartan potassium formulations in vitro was tested using KP VIII Apparatus II method with various dissolution media. Twenty eight healthy male subjects, $23.86{\pm}1.80$ years in age and $67.27{\pm}6.60\;kg$ in body weight, were divided into two groups and a randomized $2{\times}2$ cross-over study was employed. After a single tablet containing 50 mg as losartan potassium was orally administered, blood samples were taken at predetermined time intervals, and the concentrations of losartan in serum were determined using HPLC with fluorescence detector. The dissolution profiles of two formulations were similar in all tested dissolution media. The pharmacokinetic parameters such as $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$ and $T_{max}$ were calculated, and Equiv Test/K-BE Test 2002 was utilized for the statistical analysis of the parameters using logarithmically transformed $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$ and untransformed $T_{max}$. The results showed that the differences between two formulations based on the reference drug, Cozaar, were -2.70%, 1.45% and 2.31% for $AUC_t$, $C_{max}$ and $T_{max}$, respectively. There were no sequence effects between two formulations in these parameters. The 90% confidence intervals using logarithmically transformed data were within the acceptance range of log 0.8 to log 1.25 (e.g., log 0.8852~log 1.0655 and log 0.8319~log 1.2342 for $AUC_t$ and $C_{max}$, respectively). Thus, the criteria of the KFDA bioequivalence guideline were satisfied, indicating Losata tablet was bioequivalent to Cozaar tablet.
