  • It was numerically studied that NOx emission characteristics of confined $CH_{4}$ jet flames with the variation of the diameter of inner fuel nozzle, the flow rate of $CH_{4}$ and equivalence ratio. Parabolic type equations were adopted in the calculation and GRI-2.1I mechanism was used for the chemical reaction. NOx emission index (EINOx) was introduced to evaluate NOx emission quantitatively in parametrically varied flames and the contribution of Thermal and Prompt NO mechanism was discussed. The results showed that Total EINOx varied sensitively with the variation of the flow rate of$CH_{4}$ but it was not sensitive to the variation of the diameter of inner fuel nozzle. Thermal EINOx showed the similar tendency to total EINOx and Prompt EINOx showed insensitivity to the variation of the diameter of inner fuel nozzle and the flow rate of $CH_{4}$.

  • The firtst-order conditional moment closure (CMC) model is applied to CH4/air swirl diffusion flame in a gas turbine model combustor. The flow and mixing fields are calculated by fast chemistry assumption with SLFM library and a beta function pdf for mixture fraction. RNG k-e model is used to consider the swirl flame in a confined wall. Reacting scalar fields are calculated by elliptic CMC formulation with chemical kinetic mechanism, GRI Mech 3.0. Validation is done against measurement data for mean flow and scalar fields in the model combustor [1]. Results show reasonable agreement with the mean mixture fraction and its variance, while temperature is overpredicted as the level of local extinction increases. The second-order CMC model is needed to consider local extinction with considerable conditional fluctuations near the nozzle.

  • In laminar non-premixed flame situation, the flamelet model is not suitable for simulating slow processor like soot and radiation. Thus in this study, we overcome this limitation by using the transient flamelet model. Also, for soot formation on laminar non-premixed flame, transient flamelet coupled with two-equation soot model has been adopted due to its inherent advantages in terms of accuracy and availability. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the precise structure and soot formation processes in the pressurized methane air flames.

  • Unsteady behaviors of counterflow flame were studied experimentally in opposing jet counterflow burner using diluted methane. To generate the unsteadiness on the flame, the counterflow diffusion flame was perturbed by velocity changes made by the pistons installed on both sides of the air and fuel stream. The velocity changes were measured by Hot wire and Laser Doppler Velocimetry, and the flame behaviors were observed by High speed ICCD and ICCD. In this investigation, the spatial irregularity of the strain rate caused the flame to extinguish from the outside to the axis during the extinction, and we found the following unsteady phenomena. First, the extinction strain rates of unsteady cases are much larger than those of the steady ones. Second, the extinction strain rates become larger as the slope of the change of the strain rate increases. Third, the unsteady extinction strain rates become smaller with the increase of the initial strain rate.

  • A premixed flame propagating in a tube suffers strong variation in its shape and structure depending on boundary conditions. The effects of thermal boundary conditions and flow fields on flame propagation are numerically investigated. Navier-Stokes equations and species equations are solved with a one-step irreversible global reaction model of methane-air mixture. Finite volume method using an adaptive grid method is applied to investigate the flame structure. In the case of an adiabatic wall, friction force on the wall significantly affected the flame structure while in the case of an isothermal wall, local quenching near the wall dominated flame shapes and propagation. In both cases, variations of flow fields occurred not only in the near field of the flame but also within the flame itself, which affected propagation velocities. This study provides an overview of the characteristics of flames in small tubes at a steady state.

  • The effect of electric fields on flame speed has been investigated experimentally by observing propagating premixed flames in a tube for methane/air mixtures. The flame speeds were measured in both the normal and micro gravity conditions to substantiate the measurements. The results show that the flame speeds were enhanced by both the AC and DC electric fields, as the flame approached to the high voltage electrode located on the one end of the tube. The enhancement of flame speed was proportional to the square root of the electric field intensity, defined as the voltage applied divided by the distance of flame from the high voltage electrode, when the electric field intensity is sufficiently large. When the electric field intensity was low, there existed critical intensities, below which the electric fields did not influence the flame speed. This critical electric field intensity correlated well with the flame speed.

  • Biogas produced from anaerobic digestion processes has about 60% of methane and about 40% of carbon dioxide. Raw biogas can be used in internal combustion engines either spark ignition or diesel engines. Since the gas has relatively low calorific values, engine power also is lower than rated power values. Modified engines or biogas-specific engines have been utilized in order to increase efficiency. Another option is gas cleansing for increasing its calorific values. A couple of European countries adopted this approach in using biogas for one of transportation fuels, such as $CO_2$ scrubbing with water or special solutions. This study reports the results of water scrubbing for reducing $CO_2$ concentration. In 2.5m-high PVC pipe accepting water, $CO_2$ reduction rates were investigated. When flow rate of $CO_2$ and air mixture was about 5 LPM, $CO_2$ concentration was decreased up to 70%. Higher calorific biogas through water scrubbing is expected to be applied to various commercial engines without costly modification.

  • A direct numerical simulation (DNS) was applied to nonpremixed counter-flow diffusion flames between oxidizer and fuel ducts. The objective of this study is to evaluate the numerical method for simulation of axisymmetric counterflow diffusion flames. Effects of computational domain size and grid size were scrutinized, and then the method was applied to air-methane diffusion flames. The results at zero gravity conditions were in good agreement with those obtained by the one-dimension flame code OPPDIF. It was confirmed thai the numerical method is applicable to the diffusion flames at the normal gravity conditions since the results clearly showed the effects of buoyancy and velocity ratio.

  • Sawtooth mixing device used in a non-premixed burner is evaluated for flame stabilization and NO$_{x}$ reduction. Three mixers with different blade angles are tested. Methane is delivered through the fuel jet and air passes through the co-flow annulus. The flame mode changes (attached flame, lifted flame and extinction) against the fuel flow speed are measured, and the stability diagram is drawn. Moreover, by traversing thermocouple and sampling probe in the flame, the distribution of temperature and NO$_{x}$ mole fraction are measured. With the change in blade angle, flame shape, flame stabilization, the distribution of temperature and NO$_{x}$ mole fraction are changed considerably.rably.

  • The multi-environment PDF model coupled with flamelet generated manifolds(FGM) has been developed for a large eddy simulation of turbulent partially premixed lifted flame. This approach has a capability to realistically account for the transport and evolution of probability density function for mixture fraction and progress variable with the manageable computational burden. Using the tabulated chemistry, it is possible to track radical distributions which is important to predict autoignition process with the vitiated coflow environment. Numerical results indicate that the present yields the good agreement with experimental data in terms of mixture fraction, temperature, and species mass fractions.
