  • The purpose of the present study is to develope the estimation scheme for sensible heat flux by semi-empirical approach using routine meteorological data such as solar radiation and air temperature. To compare observed sensible heat flux with estimated sensible heat flux, the sensible heat fluxes were measured by three dimensional sonic anemometer-thermometer. The field observation was performed during 1 year from December 1, 1995 to November 30, 1996 on a rice paddy field in Chunchon basin. The heat fluxes were measured at a heights of 5m and mean meteorological variables were obtained at two levels, 2.5m(or 1.5m) and 10m. Since condition of rice paddy field such as, wetness of the field, roughness length, vary widely, we devided annual data to 5 periods. Comparing with two sensible heat fluxes, the results showed that the correlation coefficients were more than 0.86. Thus, we can conclude that the estimation method of sensible heat fluxes using routine meteorological data is practical and reliable enough.

  • The recent 3D visualization such as volume rendering, iso-surface rendering or stream line visualization gives more understanding about structures or distribution of data in a space and, moreover, the real-time rendering of a scene enables the animation of time-series data. Because the meteorological data is frequently formed as multi-variables, 3-dimensional and time-series data, the spatial analysis, time-series analysis, vector display, and animation techniques can do important roles to get more understanding about data. In this research, our aim is to develop the 3-dimensional visualization techniques for meteorological data in the PC environment by using IDL. The visualization technology from :his research will be used as basic technology not only for the deeper understanding and the more exact prediction about meteorological environments but also for the scientific and spatial data visualization research in any field from which three-dimensional data comes out such as oceanography, earth science, or aeronautical engineering.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate meteorological factors' effects on clothing sales based on empirical data from a leading apparel company. The daily sales data were aggregated from "A" company's store records for the Fall/Winter season from 2012 to 2015. Daily weather data corresponding to sales volume data were collected from the Korea Meteorological Administration. The weekend effect and meteorological factors including temperature, wind, humidity, rainfall, fine dust, sea level pressure, and sunshine hours were selected as independent variables to calculate their effects on A company's apparel sales volume. The analysis used a SAS program including correlation analysis, t-test, and multiple-regression analysis. The study results were: First, the weekend effect was the most influential factor affecting sales volume, followed by fine dust and temperature. Second, there were significant differences in the independent variables'effects on sales volume according to the garments' classification. Third, temperature significantly affected outer garments'sales volume, while top garments' sales volume was not influenced significantly. Fourth, humidity, sea level pressure and sunshine affected sales volume partly according to the garments' item. This study can provide proof of significant relationships between meteorological factors and the sales volume of garments, which will serve well to establish better inventory strategies.

  • High-quality and high-resolution meteorological information is essential to reduce damages due to disastrous weather phenomena such as flash flood, strong wind, and heat/cold waves. There are many meteorological observation stations operated by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) in Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). Nonetheless, they are still not enough to represent small-scale weather phenomena like convective storm cells due to its poor resolution, especially over urban areas with high-rise buildings and complex land use. In this study, feasibilities to use additional pre-existing networks (e.g., operated by local government and private company) are tested by investigating the effects of network density on the gridded horizontal distribution of two meteorological variables (temperature and precipitation). Two heat wave event days and two precipitation events are chosen, respectively. And the automatic weather station (AWS) networks operated by KMA, local-government, and SKTechX in Incheon area are used. It is found that as network density increases, correlation coefficients between the interpolated values with a horizontal resolution of 350 m and observed data also become large. The range of correlation coefficients with respect to the network density shows large in nighttime rather than in daytime for temperature. While, the range does not depend on the time of day, but on the precipitation type and horizontal distribution of convection cells. This study suggests that temperature and precipitation sensors should be added at points with large horizontal inhomogeneity of land use or topography to represent the horizontal features with a resolution higher than 350 m.

  • Global climate variations are expected to affect local hydro-meteorological variables like precipitation and temperature. The Southern Oscillation (SO) is one of the major driving forces that give impact on regional and local climatic variation. The relationships between SO and local climate variation are, however, characterized by strong nonlinear variation patterns. In this paper, the nonlinear dynamic relationship between the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), precipitation, and temperature in Fukuoka, Japan, is investigated using by a nonlinear multivariable approach. This approach is based on the joint variation of these variables in the phase space. The joint phase-space variation of SOI, precipitation, and temperature is studied with the primary objective to obtain a better understanding of the dynamical evolution of local hydro-meteorological variables affected by global atmospheric-oceanic phenomena.

  • In this study, applicabilities of aerodynamic approaches for the estimation of pan evaporation were evaluated on 56 study stations in South Korea. To accomplish this study purpose, previous researchers' evaporation estimation equations based on aerodynamic approaches were grouped into seven generalized evaporation models. Furthermore, four multiple linear regression (MLR) models were developed and tested. The independent variables of MLR models are meteorological variables such as wind speed, vapor pressure deficit, air temperature, and atmospheric pressure. These meteorological variables are required for the application of aerodynamic approaches. In order to consider the effect of autocorrelation, MLR models were developed after differencing variables. The applicability of MLR models with differenced variables was compared with that of MLR models with undifferenced variables and the comparison results showed no significant difference between the two methods. The study results have indicated that there is strong correlation between estimated pan evaporation (using aerodynamic models and MLR models) and measured pan evaporation. However, pan evaporation are overestimated during August, September, October, November, and December. Most of meteorological variables that are used for MLR models show statistical significance in the estimation of pan evaporation. Vapor pressure deficit was turned out to be the most significant meteorological variable. The second most significant variable was air temperature; wind speed was the third most significant variable, followed by atmospheric pressure.

  • In this paper, precipitation / non-precipitation pattern classification of meteorological radar data is conducted by using neuro-fuzzy algorithm. Structure expression of meteorological radar data information is analyzed in order to effectively classify precipitation and non-precipitation. Also diverse input variables for designing pattern classifier could be considered by exploiting the quantitative as well as qualitative characteristic of meteorological radar data information and then each characteristic of input variables is analyzed. Preferred pattern classifier can be designed by essential input variables that give a decisive effect on output performance as well as model architecture. As the proposed model architecture, neuro-fuzzy algorithm is designed by using FCM-based radial basis function neural network(RBFNN). Two parts of classifiers such as instance classifier part and echo classifier part are designed and carried out serially in the entire system architecture. In the instance classifier part, the pattern classifier identifies between precipitation and non-precipitation data. In the echo classifier part, because precipitation data information identified by the instance classifier could partially involve non-precipitation data information, echo classifier is considered to classify between them. The performance of the proposed classifier is evaluated and analyzed when compared with existing QC method.

  • Evaporation from surface water bodies is influenced by a number of meteorological parameters. The rate of evaporation is primarily controlled by incoming solar radiation, air and water temperature and wind speed and relative humidity. In the present study, influence of weekly meteorological variables such as air temperature, relative humidity, bright sunshine hours, wind speed, wind velocity, rainfall on rate of evaporation has been examined using 35 years(1971-2005) of meteorological data. Statistical analysis was carried out employing linear regression models. The developed regression models were tested for goodness of fit, multicollinearity along with normality test and constant variance test. These regression models were subsequently validated using the observed and predicted parameter estimates with the meteorological data of the year 2005. Further these models were checked with time order sequence of residual plots to identify the trend of the scatter plot and then new standardized regression models were developed using standardized equations. The highest significant positive correlation was observed between pan evaporation and maximum air temperature. Mean air temperature and wind velocity have highly significant influence on pan evaporation whereas minimum air temperature, relative humidity and wind direction have no such significant influence.

  • Until now, the stealth design to reduce the infrared signature of ship haven't been carried out using the proper design criteria. The study on the maritime meteorological environment in the Korean seas hasn't been accomplished yet, so the design criteria of the maritime meteorological environment was just given by the engineering sense without experience of the Navy and/or of the shipyard. Even in rather good conditions(summer condition), the estimated IR signature of a ship showed larger values and couldn't predict the worst condition during the operation of a ship at sea. In this study, domestic maritime meteorological data were collected and variables affecting the IR signature of a ship had been derived through the sensitivity study of IR signature according to the maritime meteorological environment in Korean seas. The basic study on the criteria of the stealth design of IR signature has been carried out.
