KIM을 위한 지상 기반 GNSS 자료 동화 체계 개발 및 효과 (Development of Ground-based GNSS Data Assimilation System for KIM and their Impacts)

  • Assimilation trials were performed using the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS) Korea Integrated Model (KIM) semi-operational forecast system to assess the impact of ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) on forecast. To use the optimal observation in data assimilation of KIM forecast system, in this study, the ZTD observation were pre-processed. It involves the bias correction using long term background of KIM, the quality control based on background and the thinning of ZTD data. Also, to give the effect of observation directly to data assimilation, the observation operator which include non-linear model, tangent linear model, adjoint model, and jacobian code was developed and verified. As a result, impact of ZTD observation in both analysis and forecast was neutral or slightly positive on most meteorological variables, but positive on geopotential height. In addition, ZTD observations contributed to the improvement on precipitation of KIM forecast, specially over 5 mm/day precipitation intensity.

기상자료를 이용한 마늘 생산량 추정 (Garlic yields estimation using climate data)

  • 야외에서 재배되는 주요 채소류의 생산에 대한 기상변화의 영향력이 점차 커지고 있다. 기상변화로 인한 농작물 생산량의 변화는 공급과 수요의 불안정과 물가안정의 불안요소로 작용하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 패널회귀모형을 이용하여 기상상태에 따른 마늘의 생산량을 추정하였다. 2006년부터 2015년까지의 마늘 주산지 15곳의 10a당 마늘 생산량과 해당 지역의 기상자료를 사용하였다. 7가지 기상요인 (평균기온, 평균최저기온, 평균최고기온, 누적강수량, 누적일조시간, 평균상대습도, 평균지면온도)의 월별 (1월-12월)자료인 총 84개 기상변수중 다중회귀분석 단계선택방법을 통하여 7가지 기상변수를 선택하여 패널회귀모형에 사용하였다. 고정효과 모형과 확률효과 모형을 구분하는 하우스만 검정을 통하여 확률효과 모형으로 분석한 결과 평균최고기온 (1월), 누적강수량 (3월, 10월), 누적일조시간 (4월, 10월)등이 마늘 생산량 추정에 유의한 변수로 나타났다. 또한 연도별로 추정된 생산량 추정값의 추이가 실제 생산량과 동일한 추세를 보이고 있어 제안된 패널 회귀 모형이 잘 적합됨을 확인할 수 있다.

영동과 영남 지역에서 발생한 두 대설의 발달 메커니즘 비교 (Comparison of Development Mechanisms of Two Heavy Snowfall Events Occurred in Yeongnam and Yeongdong Regions of the Korean Peninsula)

  • Two heavy snowfall events occurred in Yeongnam and Yeongdong regions of the Korean Peninsula during the period from 4 to 6 March 2005 are analyzed. The events were developed by two different meso-scale snow clouds associated with an extratropical low passing over the Western Pacific. Based on synoptic data, GOES-9 satellite images, and precipitation amount data, the events were named as Sokcho and Busan cases, respectively. We analyzed the development mechanism of the events using meterological variables from the NCEP(National Centers for Environmental Prediction) /NCAR(National Centers for Atmospheric Research) reanalysis data such as potential vorticity(PV), divergence, tropopause undulation, static stability, and meridional wind circulation. The present analyses show that in the case of Sokcho, the cyclonic circulation in the lower atmosphere in the strong baroclinic region induced the cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere. The cyclonic circulation in the lower and upper atmosphere caused a heavy snowfall in the Sokcho region. In the case of Busan, the strong cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere was initiated by the stratospheric air intrusion with the high positive PV into the troposphere during the tropopause folding. The upper strong cyclonic circulation enhanced the cyclonic circulation in the lower disturbed atmosphere due to the extratropical low. This lower cyclonic circulation in turn, intensified the upper cyclonic circulation, that caused a heavy snowfall in the Busan region.

우리나라에서 병원성 대장균 식중독 발생과 기후요소의 영향 (Influence of Climate Factors on the Occurrence of Pathogenic Escherichia coli Food Poisoning in Korea)

  • Objectives: An outbreak of pathogenic Escherichia coli food poisoning in Korea was first reported in 1998. They have continued to occure since then. This study was performed to describe the long-term trend in pathogenic E. coli food poisoning occurrences in Korea and examine the relation with climate factors. Methods: Official Korean statistics on food poisoning outbreaks and meteorological data for the period 2002-2017 were used. Pearson's correlation analysis was employed to establish the relationship between outbreaks of pathogenic E. coli food poisoning and meteorological factors. The influence of meteorological factors upon the outbreaks was analyzed by regression analysis. Results: During the study period, pathogenic E. coli food poisoning ranked second for the number of outbreaks (excluding unknowns) and first for the number of cases. Average temperature, the highest and lowest temperatures, precipitation, number of days with rainfall, and humidity all had a significant correlation with monthly number of outbreaks of pathogenic E. coli food poisoning (p<0.001). It was found that the lowest and highest temperatures and precipitation had a significant influence on the monthly number of outbreaks of food poisoning (p<0.001). These variables together explained 42.1% of the total variance, with the lowest temperature having the greatest explanatory power. Conclusion: These results show that food poisoning incidences may have been influenced by climate change, especially warming. The results also suggest that pathogenic E. coli infections are now an important public health issue in Korea since it is one of the countries where climate change is occurring rapidly.

기계학습법을 이용한 서리 발생 구분 추정 연구 (Study on the Estimation of Frost Occurrence Classification Using Machine Learning Methods)

  • 본 연구에서는 기상청 예보자료를 이용할 것을 전제로 서리가 발생하는 날과 서리가 발생하지 않는 날을 구분하는 모형을 구축하였다. 서리가 발생한 날과 서리가 발생하지 않은 날을 구분할 수 있는 기상인자로서 최저기온, 평균풍속, 평균상대습도, 평균이슬점온도로 나타났다. 기상인자별로 두 날을 비교한 결과 서리가 발생한 날이 서리가 발생하지 않은 날에 비해 최저기온, 이슬점온도, 평균풍속은 낮게 나타났고 상대습도는 높게 나타났다. 이러한 기상인자로 인공신경망, 랜덤포레스트, 서포트벡터 머신의 기계학습법을 이용한 모형을 연구한 결과 70%이상의 정확도를 나타내어 활용 가능성이 있을 것으로 판단된다.

영동 지역의 극한 대설 사례와 관련된 종관 환경 (Synoptic Environment Associated with Extreme Heavy Snowfall Events in the Yeongdong Region)

  • This study presents local and synoptic conditions associated with extreme heavy snowfall events in the Yeongdong region, as well as the temporal and spatial variability of these conditions. During the last 12 years (2001~2012), 3 extreme snowfall events occurred in the Yeongdong region, which recorded daily snowfall greater than 50 cm, respectively. In these events, one of the noticeable features is the occurrence of heavy hourly snowfall greater than 10 cm. It was reported from satellite analysis that these heavy snowfall may be closely related to mesoscale convective clouds. In this paper the 3 extreme events are examined on their synoptic environments associated with the developments of mesoscale convective system using numerical model output. These 3 events all occurred in strongly forced synoptic environments where 500 and 300 hPa troughs and 500 hPa thermal troughs were evident. From the analysis of diagnostic variables, it was found in all 3 events that absolute vorticity and cold air advection were dominant in the Yeongdong region and its surrounding sea at upper levels, especially at around 500 hPa (absolute vorticity: $20{\sim}60{\times}10^{-5}s^{-1}$, cold air advection: $-10{\sim}-20^{\circ}C$ $12hr^{-1}$). Moreover, the spatial distributions of cold advection showed mostly the shape of a narrow band along the eastern coast of Korea. These features of absolute vorticity and cold advection at 500 hPa were sustained for about 10 hours before the occurrence of maximum hourly snowfall.

복사전달과정에서 지형효과에 따른 기상수치모델의 민감도 분석 (Sensitivity Analysis of Numerical Weather Prediction Model with Topographic Effect in the Radiative Transfer Process)

  • Numerical weather prediction experiments were carried out by applying topographic effects to reduce or enhance the solar radiation by terrain. In this study, x and ${\kappa}({\phi}_o,\;{\theta}_o)$ are precalculated for topographic effect on high resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) with 1 km spatial resolution, and meteorological variables are analyzed through the numerical experiments. For the numerical simulations, cases were selected in winter (CASE 1) and summer (CASE 2). In the CASE 2, topographic effect was observed on the southward surface to enhance the solar energy reaching the surface, and enhance surface temperature and temperature at 2 m. Especially, the surface temperature is changed sensitively due to the change of the solar energy on the surface, but the change of the precipitation is difficult to match of topographic effect. As a result of the verification using Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Automated Weather System (AWS) data on Seoul metropolitan area, the topographic effect is very weak in the winter case. In the CASE 1, the improvement of accuracy was numerically confirmed by decreasing the bias and RMSE (Root mean square error) of temperature at 2 m, wind speed at 10 m and relative humidity. However, the accuracy of rainfall prediction (Threat score (TS), BIAS, equitable threat score (ETS)) with topographic effect is decreased compared to without topographic effect. It is analyzed that the topographic effect improves the solar radiation on surface and affect the enhancements of surface temperature, 2 meter temperature, wind speed, and PBL height.

부산지역 미세먼지 농도 분포에 따른 기상요소 분석 (Analysis on Meteorological Factors related to the Distribution of PM10 Concentration in Busan)

  • $PM_{10}$ concentration is related to the meteorological variables including to local and synoptic meteorology. In this study the $PM_{10}$ concentrations of Busan in 2007~2011 were analyzed and the days of yellow sand or rainfall which is more than 5 mm were excluded. The sections of $PM_{10}$ concentration were divided according to 10-quantiles, quartiles and 90-quantiles. The 90-quantiles of daily $PM_{10}$ concentration were selected as high concentration dates. In the high concentration dates the daily mean averaged cloudness, mean daily surface wind speed, daily mean surface pressure and PBL height were low and diurnal variation of surface pressure and daily maximum surface temperature were high. When the high $PM_{10}$ dates occurred, the west and south wind blew on the ground and the west wind blew strongly on the 850 hPa. So it seemed that long range transboundary air pollutants made effects on the high concentration dates. The cluster analysis using Hysplit model which is the backward trajectory was made on the high concentration dates. As a result, 3 clusters were extracted and on the short range transboundary cluster the daily mean relative humidity and cloudness were high and PBL height was low.

  • 이 연구는 6월 남극진동이 한국 6월 강우량에 영향을 주는지 알아보기 위해 두 변수 사이에 상관분석이 이루어졌고 높은 양의 상관관계가 있음이 밝혀졌다. 이는 한국 6월 강우량이 같은 시기에 남반구에서 강화되는 머스커렌 고기압과 호주 고기압의 영향을 받음을 의미하는 것이다. 이 두 고기압이 발달할 때 호주 주위지역으로부터 적도방향으로 적도 횡단류가 강화되며, 이 적도 횡단류의 강화는 북태평양고기압의 북쪽으로의 강화로 이어진다. 이는 결국 장마전선을 한국으로 북상시키는 역할을 한다. 더욱이 북태평양 고기압의 북쪽으로의 강화는 한국에 상륙하거나 영향을 주는 태풍의 빈도를 증가시켜 6월 강우량의 증가에 중요한 역할을 한다.

  • Recently, several studies pointed out that there are distinct two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o events based on the spatial pattern of SST. Since the two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o have different impacts on global climate, it is quite important to identify the type to assess and predict the regional climate variability. So far, however, there are still many different definitions to identify the two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o from the different studies. In this study, we investigated a sensitivity of the impacts on climate variability over the Korean Peninsula corresponding to the definition of two-types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o. After checking pre-existing definitions and other possible definition, it is suggested here that two different definitions exhibit relatively strong relationship between El Ni$\tilde{n}$o events and the Korean climate variables when two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o are separated. In addition to the Korean climate, the two types of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o show quite distinct global teleconnection patterns when the definitions are used.
