  • The surface meteorological and upper layer meteorological observation carried out to investigate influences of sea breeze effect on lower layer atmosphere at Gori nuclear power plant for 29∼30 July, 1996. According to surface meteorological data, the inflow of sea breeze was occurred 11:30 on 29 July, 10:30-on 30 July, respectively, at observation site. And the meteorological tower data showed that wind direction of sea breeze was identified as south-westerly, and wind speed of 58 m was 2 times stronger than that of 10 m. It is notworthy that surface inversion layer which built from the night time to daybreak of next day was not broken off by seab reeze's inflow for daytime, and strong inversion layer observed at 47∼243 m with moderately stable class (F) by URC. It was found that strong stable layer of potential temperature appeared at that layer, maximum relative humidity observed at the bottom of inversion layer and maximum mixing ratio observed in the low of inversion layer.

  • In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, drones have become a flexible device that can be integrated with new technologies. The drones were originally developed as military unmanned aircraft and are now being used in various fields. In the environment and weather observation area, the atmospheric boundary layer is near the surface where the atmosphere is the most active in the meteorological phenomenon and has a close influence on human activities. In order to carry out the study of these atmospheric boundary layers, it is necessary to observe precisely the lower atmosphere and secure the observation technology. The drones in the meteorological field can be used for meteorological observations at a relatively low maintenance cost compared to existing equipment. When used in conjunction with various sensors, the drones can be widely used in atmospheric boundary layer and local meteorological studies. In this study, the possibility of meteorological observations using drones was confirmed by conducting vertical meteorological (temperature and humidity) observation experiments equipped with a combined meteorological sensor and a radio sonde on drones owned by NIMS.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate predictability of the seasonal simulation by the METRI (Meteorological Research Institute) AGCM (Atmospheric General Circulation Model), which is a long-term prediction model for the METRI 3-month prediction system. We examine the performance skill of climate simulation and predictability by the analysis of variance of the METRI AGCM, focusing on the precipitation, 850 hPa temperature, and 500 hPa geopotential height. According to the result, the METRI AGCM shows systematic errors with seasonal march, and represents large errors over the equatorial region, compared to the observation. Also, the response of the METRI AGCM by the variation of the sea surface temperature is obvious for the wintertime and springtime. However, the METRI AGCM does not show the significant ENSO-related signal in autumn. In case of prediction over the east Asian region, errors between the prediction results and the observation are not quite large with the lead-time. However, in the predictability assessment using the analysis of variance method, longer lead-time makes the prediction better, and the predictability becomes better in the springtime.

  • This study investigated the performances of precipitable water vapor (PWV) retrieval from the sets of ground global positioning system (GPS) signals, each of which had different length of observing-session duration, for the purpose of obtaining as short session duration as possible that is required at the least for appropriate retrieval of the PWV for meteorological usage. The shorter duration is highly desirable to make the most use of the GPS instrument on board the mobile observation vehicle making measurements place by place. First, using Bernese 5.0 software the PWV retrieval was conducted with the data sets of GPS signals archived continuously in 30 seconds interval during 2-month period of January and February, 2012 at Bukgangneung site. Each of the PWVs produced independently using different session durations was compared to that of radio-sonde launched at the same GPS location, a Bukgangneung site. Second, the same procedure was done using the data sets obtained from the mobile observation vehicle that was operating at Boseong area in Jeonnam province during Changma observation campaign in 2013, and the results were compared to that at Bukgangneung site. The results showed that as the observing-session duration increased the retrieval errors decreased with the dramatic change happening between 3 and 4 hours of the duration. On average, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the retrieved PWV was around 1 mm for the durations of greater than 4 hours. The results at both the Bukgangneung (fixed site) and Boseong (mobile vehicle) seemed to be fairly comparable with each other. From this study it is believed that at least 4 hours of observing-session duration is needed for the retrieval of PWV from the ground GPS for meteorological usage using Bernese 5.0 software.

  • The relocation effect of observation station (REOS) on the homogeneity of seasonal mean of maximum and minimum temperature, diurnal temperature range (DTR) and relative humidity (RH) was investigated using surface observation data and document file. Twelve stations were selected among the 60 stations which have been operated more than 30 years and relocated over one time. The data from Chunpungryeong station were used as a reference to separate the impacts of station relocation from the effects caused by increased green house gases, urbanization, and others. The REOS was calculated as a difference between REOS of relocated station and REOS of reference station. Although the REOS is clearly dependent on season, meteorological elements, and observing stations, statistically significant impacts are found in many stations, especially the environment of observing station after relocation is greatly changed. As a result, homogeneity of seasonal mean of meteorological elements, especially DTR and RH, is greatly reduced. The results showed that the effect of REOS, along with the effect of urbanization, should be eliminated for the proper estimation of climate change from the analysis of long-term observation data.

  • Numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of data assimilation of observational data on weather and PM (particulate matter) prediction. Observational data applied to numerical experiment are aircraft observation, satellite observation, upper level observation, and AWS (automatic weather system) data. In the case of grid nudging, the prediction performance of the meteorological field is largely improved compared with the case without data assimilations because the overall pressure distribution can be changed. So grid nudging effect can be significant when synoptic weather pattern strongly affects Korean Peninsula. Predictability of meteorological factors can be expected to improve through a number of observational data assimilation, but data assimilation by single data often occurred to be less predictive than without data assimilation. Variation of air pressure due to observation nudging with high prediction efficiency can improve prediction accuracy of whole model domain. However, in areas with complex terrain such as the eastern part of the Korean peninsula, the improvement due to grid nudging were only limited. In such cases, it would be more effective to aggregate assimilated data.

  • The synoptic structural characteristics associated with heavy snowfall (Bukgangneung: 31.3 cm) that occurred in the Yeongdong area on 20 January 2017 was investigated using surface and upper-level weather charts, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis data, radiosonde data, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud product. The cold dome and warm trough of approximately 500 hPa appeared with tropopause folding. As a result, cold and dry air penetrated into the middle and upper levels. At this time, the enhanced cyclonic potential vorticity caused strong baroclinicity, resulting in the sudden development of low pressure at the surface. Under the synoptic structure, localized heavy snowfall occurred in the Yeongdong area within a short time. These results can be confirmed from the vertical analysis of radiosonde data and the characteristics of the MODIS cloud product.

  • Understanding limitation of simulation for Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) height in mesoscale meteorological model is important for accurate meteorological variable and diffusion of air pollution. This study examined the accuracy for simulated PBL heights using two different PBL schemes (MYJ, YSU) in Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model during the radiosonde observation period. The simulated PBL height were verified using atmospheric sounding data obtained from radiosonde observations that were conducted during 5 months from August to December 2014 over the Gumi weir in Nakdong river. Four Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA) using radiosonde observation data were conducted to reduce error of PBL height in WRF model. The assessment result of PBL height showed that RMSE with YSU scheme were lower than that with MYJ scheme in the day and night time, respectively. Especially, the WRF model with YSU scheme produced lower PBL height than with the MYJ scheme during night time. The YSU scheme showed lower RMSE than the MYJ scheme on sunny, cloudy and rainy day, too. The experiment result of FDDA showed that PBL height error were reduced by FDDA and PBL height at the nudging coefficient of $3.0{\times}10^{-1}$ (YSU_FDDA_2) were similar to observation compared to the nudging coefficient of $3.0{\times}10^{-4}$ (YSU_FDDA_1).

  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication, ocean observation and meteorological observation. Conventional thermal control design, using MLI (Multi Layer Insulation), OSR (Optical Solar Reflector), heater and heat pipe, is utilized. Ka-band components are installed on South wall, while other equipment for sensors are installed on the opposite side, North wall. High dissipating communication units are located on external (surface) heat pipe and are covered by internal insulation blankets to decouple them from the rest of the satellite. External satellite walls are covered by MLI or OSR for insulation from space and for rejection internal heat to space. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. Single solar array wing is adopted in order to secure clear field of view of radiant cooler of IR meteorological sensor. This paper presents principles of thermal control design for the COMS.
