  • The bone fracture healing is simulated by using one of the complex system rules, named cellular automata method. It is assumed that each cell has property of Bone, Cartilage or Fibrous connective tissue. Nine local rules are adopted to change the property of each cell against the mechanical stimulus, which consists of the strain energy density, and the existence of bone in the surroundings. Two dimensional sheep metatarsal model is considered and the bone fracture healing is simulated. The simulation results agree well with those obtained by using fuzzy logic model and experimental data. The cellular automata method found to be one of the simulation methods to express the bone fracture healing. The cellular automata method is expected to be effective in representing biological phenomenon.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare plantar foot pressure distribution in adults and elderly according to obstacle height. Methods: Nine healthy adults and nine older adults were recruited and the subjects provided written informed consent consent prior to participation. Both groups walked and crossed obstacles with heights of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of their height. Foot pressure was measured by peak pressure using the Pedar System (Novel Gmbh, Germany) during obstacle walking with barefeet in shoes. Three trails were calculated on eight areas and then averaged for data analysis. Results: A significant difference in great toe, little toes, and lateral metatarsal area was observed between adults and elderly groups, but other areas did not show significant differences. Foot pressure was increased in groups according to obstacle height. Conclusion: These findings showed that change in foot pressure distribution is more lateral in elderly in order to maintain postural control during obstacle crossing.

  • The goal of surgical correction for hallux valgus is to achieve a painless, shoe-wearable, and relatively straight toe with a balanced joint motion that results in aesthetically and functionally satisfactory toe. To date, there has not been a consensus on the ultimate surgical procedure for hallux valgus correction. Unfortunately, such a consensus may be difficult since it is not uncommon to encounter complications after hallux valgus correction. Postoperative soft tissue complications include difficult wound healing, infection, hypertrophy, or pain of the scar, joint stiffness, and tendon or sensory nerve damage. Postoperative bony complications include malunion, nonunion, failure of fixation, failure of angle correction, recurred deformity, osteomyelitis, and failure of balance between the metatarsal heads. Herein, we review common complications after surgical correction of hallux valgus, such as stiff joint, bony complications, recurrence of the deformity, and hallux varus.

  • Recurrence is a common complication following hallux valgus surgery. The postoperative recurrence rates have been reported to be between 2.7% and 16%. Reoperation is considered only for the recurrent deformities with intractable pain. The success of reoperation depends on identifying and addressing the cause of the recurrence appropriately. The surgical principle of reoperation for a recurrent hallux valgus is similar to that of the primary surgery, but arthrodesis and proximal metatarsal osteotomies with greater correcting power are adopted more frequently.

  • TMJ reconstruction is one of the most challenging surgical treatment, and many methods using autogenous and alloplastic materials have been reported for making neocondyle. Although alloplastic materials which include aclylic, synthetic and total joint system are recently widely used, many surgeons agree that autogenous TMJ reconstruction is gold standard until now. In this article, classification of the TMJ defects and the various TMJ reconstruction methods using autogenous source were introduced with review of literature.

  • Intra-osseous ganglion is an uncommon benign bone tumor caused by an intramedullary metaplastic event. Two cases of the intraosseous ganglion of the foot are presented; one in the metatarsus and the other in the talus. Follow-up averaged 14 months. Satisfactory results were obtained with curettage, cancellous bone graft from the ipsilateral calcaneus. No recurrence and complications occurred during the period of follow-up.

  • Callotasis has been widely used to treat brachymetatarsia. But various complications have been reported. Avascular necrosis of the $4^{th}$ brachymetatarsia treated by callotasis has not been frequently addressed in the literature. We report 1 cases of avascular necrosis of the $4^{th}$ brachymetatarsia treated by callotasis with a review of the literature.

  • Background : Many factors affect foot and ankle biomechanics during walking, including gait speed and anthropometric characteristics. This study examined the effect of walking speed on peak plantar pressure during the walking. Method : Thirty two normal healthy subjects (16 men, 16 women) were recruited. Peak plantar pressure was investigated using pressure distribution platforms (Pedoscan system) under the hallux heads of the first, second, and third metatarsal bones, and heel. Result : The results also suggest that slow walking speeds may decrease forefoot peak plantar pressure in patients with peripheral neuropathy who have a high risk of skin breakdown under the forefoot(p<0.05). Conclusion : The results also suggest that slow walking speeds may decrease forefoot peak plantar pressure in patients with restricted low extremity range of motion who have a high risk of skin breakdown under the forefoot.

  • Two 7 months old Korean native beef calves, which were suspected as ergotisms were referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospitals Chonnam National University in February 1997. Those showed severe lameness as a result of a dry gangrene of the lower part of both hindlimbs which unilaterally were detached, tail necrosis and retarded growth. On the skin of the extremities of both hindlimbs were clearly appeared indented line, hypertropic granuloma and hemorrhage, from which were isolated gicrosp$\theta$rum gysiNㅁt. On the X-ray views of hindlimbs and the longitudinal sectioned metatarsal bones were not observed any changes of osteomyelitis except slightly increased osteophytes and soft tissue swelling. Clnical and anatomical observations were suggested that these calves were affected by the ergotism.

  • An 18-month-old, Scottish Fold with severe lameness and pain in the fore- and hind-limbs was diagnosed as Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia based on radiography showing mis-shapened phalanges, bone formation around the tarsal and metatarsal joints, joint space narrowing, and ankylosis. Although computed tomography (CT) is not considered a primary method for examining Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia, CT was undertaken in this case to investigate the cause of pain and reluctant ambulation in the forelimbs. CT showed immaturely ossified bone proliferation in the carpal bones. CT-based multiplanar reconstruction can reveal the anatomic relationship between the bone lesion and the joint in various directions.
