Examination of two bronze vessels supposedly from the Koryo dynasty revealed that they consist of bowls and stands that are fixed together using rivet joints made of Cu-Ag alloys. The bowls and stands were forged out of unleaded bronze alloys of approximately 22 weight % Sn before being quenched from the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ region of the Cu-Sn phase diagram. This specific alloy and the thermo-mechanical treatment constitute two key elements of the unique technical tradition called Bangcha (방짜) that has long been established in Korea. The high Sn content ensures better casting and the thermal treatment causes the brittle ${\delta}$ phase to be avoided in forging as well as in services. The experiment on the laboratory Cu-Ag alloys of varying Ag contents suggested that the Cu-Ag system was the best choice of materials for the rivets at the time in view of their color, availability, ductility and low melting points.
This study has evaluated the dissimialr weldability of Incoloy 825 Ni base alloy with a mild steel(SS41). Further a compatibility study of wrveral Ni base filler metals with the dissimilar joint between the two alloys was also included. The dissimilar weldability of Incoloy 825 with mild steel is strongly dependent upon the type of the filler metal used. Among the filler metals, ENiCrFe which has a chemical comosition similar to that of Incoloy 825 was found to be most compatible to the joint. In addition, a filler metal which showed a good cracing resistance in one dissimiar alloy combination was not necessarily graranteed to other combination. Microstructural examination with SEM, TEM and Auger revealed that the solidification cracking resestance of the dissimilar joint. between Incoloy 835 and SS41 was closely with the Ti+Nb content and with the content of a low melting eutectic phase of Laves relatibve to that of MC type phase.
The boronizing effects of STD 61 steel have been studied on the micro structure and hardness. The STD 61 Steel was soaked in molten salt, consisted of KCl, $BaCl_2$, NaF, $B_2O_3$, FeB, and Ce, at various temperatures and times. The boronizing conditions for the peak hardness were the temperature range of $900^{\circ}C$ to $950^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr and that of $1000^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr, respectively. Four boride layers such as FeB, $Fe_2B$, ${\alpha}$ and matrix layer surface were observed from the microscopic surface examination. The thickness of boride layer was increased by increasing the boronizing time and the temperature. The structure of boride layer was tooth shape.
The contribution of damage mechanisms to failure of steam turbine casing made of Cr-Mo-V steel was investigated. Creep-fatigue interaction on the HP side corner of turbine casing was revealed as the root cause of the catastrophic failure performed by metallurgical analysis. The steady-state pressure and transient thermal stress were analyzed based on the actual operating condition of the thermal plant. Damage of creep-fatigue interaction to crack initiation was evaluated with multiaxial effects. The contribution ratio of creep and fatigue to the crack initiation was estimated to 3:1. Temporary geometrical correct action with repair weld was executed. For long-term operation, design improvement of casing equipment for creep resistance should be needed.

Microstructural examination of the Nb-Si-B alloys at Nb-rich compositions is performed. The Nb-rich corner of the Nb-Si-B system is favorable in that the constituent phases are Nb (ductile and tough phase with high melting temperature) and $T_2$ phase (very hard intermetallic compound with favorable oxidation resistance) which are good combination for high temperature structural materials. The samples containing compositions near Nb-rich corner of the Nb-Si-B ternary system are prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process using $T_2$ and Nb powders. $T_2$ bulk phase is made in arc furnace by melting the Nb slug and the Si-B powder compact. The $T_2$ bulk phase was subsequently ball-milled to powders. SPS is performed at $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$, depending on the composition, under 30 MPa for 600s, to produce disc-shaped specimen with 15 mm in diameter and 3 mm high. Hardness tests (Rockwell A-scale and micro Vickers) are carried out to estimate the mechanical property.
The changes in damping capacity with volume fractions of thermal and deformation-induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensites were compared and analyzed in an Fe-23%-Mn alloy. The volume fraction of thermal ${\varepsilon}$ martensite increased with decreasing cooling temperature, whereas that of deformation-induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensite increased steeply up to 10%- of cold rolling and nearly saturated in further cold rolling. In the case of thermal ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, the damping capacity increased linearly with the increase in ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content. For the deformation-induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, however, the damping capacity increased continuously up to 70%- of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, over which it decreased suddenly. TEM microstructures showed that the deterioration of damping capacity above 70%- of deformation-induced ${\varepsilon}$ martensite is ascribed to the introduction of perfect dislocations, which play a important role in inhibiting the movement of damping sources such as stacking fault boundaries inside ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, ${\varepsilon}$ martensite variant boundaries and ${\gamma}/{\varepsilon}$ interfaces.
In this paper, notched bar tensile tests of Inconel 617 were performed at room ($20^{\circ}C$) and elevated ($800^{\circ}C$) temperature. Finite element analyses are also performed. It is found that, at the room temperature, smooth bar tensile test results could be used to simulate notched bar tensile tests. However, at the elevated temperature, notched bar tensile test results can not be simulated from smooth bar tensile test results. Metallurgical examination reveals that strength weakening results from many cavities over the specimens for smooth bar test at the elevated temperature. "True" tensile properties at the elevated temperature is found using FE simulations. It also suggests that cautious should be taken to determine tensile properties of Inconel 617 at elevated temperatures using smooth bar tests.

A study of oxidation kinetic of Fe-36Ni alloy has been investigated using thermogravimetric apparatus (TGA) in an attempt to define the basic mechanism over a range of temperature of 400 to $1000^{\circ}C$ and finally to fabricate its powder. The oxidation rate was increased with increasing temperature and oxidation behavior of the alloy followed a parabolic rate law at elevated temperature. Temperature dependence of the reaction rate was determined with Arrhenius-type equation and activation energy was calculated to be 106.49 kJ/mol. Based on the kinetic data and micro-structure examination, oxidation mechanism was revealed that iron ions and electrons might migrate outward along grain boundaries and oxygen anion diffused inward through a spinel structure, $(Ni,Fe)_3O_4$.
This dissertation finds out trouble types and occurrence regions using the faulty statistics of nondestructive test items in rolling stock parts of the Seoul Metro and using mechanical test about defective and broken parts with broken surface observation, cutting examination about trouble region, hardness experiment and tensile test. Also this dissertation finds out cause of trouble and damage through observation of microscopic formation using metallurgical microscope and scanning electron microscope, residual stress measurement about welding parts and damage diagnosis about defective and broken parts. Moreover it will present the improved plan of nondestructive method about trouble and the removal method of defect and repair welding and find solutions of reliability in parts and preventive maintenance.
The non-destructive examinations for Yonggwang unit 6 was conducted in four different fields, these are 1)all non-destructive inspections for components, piping weldments and structures, 2)automated ultrasonic inspection for pressure vessels weldments. As the results, there were no big indications, and all indications detected during inspection were evaluated as the metallurgical and geometrical non-reinvent indications form weldments. Especially for the weldment of pipes, PD(Performance Demonstration) was applied as a UT inspection method according to 1995 edition of ASME code Sex. XI, this resulted in improvement of the reliability of UT inspection.
