The effect of residual metallic sodium on the solidification cracking susceptibility of type 316FR stainless steel was investigated via transverse-Varestraint tests. And a solidification brittle temperature range (BTR) of type 316FR stainless steel was 37 K. However, the BTR expanded from 37 to 67 K, as the amount of metallic sodium at the specimen surface increased from 0 to $7.99mg/cm^2$. Microstructural observation of the weld metal suggested that metallic sodium existed in the weld metal, including in the cell boundaries, during welding solidification. Thermodynamic calculations suggested that sodium expanded the temperature range of solidliquid coexistence during welding solidification of the steel weld metal. Therefore, the increased solidification cracking susceptibility (i.e., expansion of the BTR) in the residual sodium environment was attributed to enhanced segregation of sodium during the welding solidification; this segregation, in turn, resulted in an expanded temperature range of solid-liquid coexistence.
The addition of oxygen scavengers to food products helps to reduce oxygen exposure, thereby mitigating deterioration, including changes in taste, odor, and color, as well as inhibiting microbial growth. Despite the advantages of the existing non-metallic oxygen removal materials in terms of safety for the human body and suitability for use in microwave ovens, their utilization has been limited due to their slow reaction initiation speed. Therefore, in the current study, sodium metabisulfite was impregnated into various porous media, including halloysite nanoclay, activated carbon, montmorillonite, and silica gel. The oxygen scavenger, produced by impregnating silica gel with sodium metabisulfite, demonstrated a 425% improvement in the initial oxygen removal rate compared to pure sodium metabisulfite. Additionally, sachets containing an oxygen-removing composition with an enhanced oxygen removal rate effectively decreased the oxygen concentration to less than 0.5% on the third day of storage in apple packaging, without elevating carbon dioxide levels. Moreover, it proved effective in preventing the browning of the apple surface. Therefore, the SM/SG oxygen-removal composition can be effectively applied to active food packaging by controlling the oxygen concentration within the packaging.
Unlike conventional fuel types, fuel constituent redistribution and sodium intrusion into the fuel slug are the unique phenomena of the irradiated metallic fuel. A thermal calculation model on metallic U-10 wt.%Zr fuel rod for LMRs is developed with considerations given to these phenomena. The amount of constituent redistribution is estimated based on the thermotransport process. The temperature profile of fuel slug is predicted by taking into account of Zr redistribution, porosity formation and sodium logging effects. A sample calculation is performed and compared to experimental data in literature. As a result, the predicted redistribution and temperature profile are well agreed with experimental data, assuming that 15 times increment of ex-reactor diffusivity, $Q_{r}$$^{*}$ is -50 kJ/mole and sodium is infiltrated only outside of the fuel slug. Furthermore, the redistribution effects on fuel integrity and fuel temperature profile are discussed.d.
The U-Zr or U-TRU-Zr cylindrical metallic fuel slug used in fast reactors is known to swell significantly and to grow during irradiation. In neutronics simulations of metallic-fueled fast reactors, it is assumed that the slug has swollen and contacted cladding, and the bonding sodium has been removed from the fuel region. In this research, a realistic burnup-dependent fuel-swelling simulation was performed using Monte Carlo code McCARD for a single-batch compact sodium-cooled breed-and-burn reactor by considering the fuel-swelling behavior reported from the irradiation test results in EBR-II. The impacts of the realistic burnup-dependent fuel swelling are identified in terms of the reactor neutronics performance, such as core lifetime, conversion ratio, axial power distribution, and local burnup distributions. It was found that axial fuel growth significantly deteriorated the neutron economy of a breed-and-burn reactor and consequently impaired its neutronics performance. The bonding sodium also impaired neutron economy, because it stayed longer in the blanket region until the fuel slug reached 2% burnup.
This paper presents the synthesis of ampholyte immobilized hollow-fiber membranes and adsorption characteristic of metallic ions. This is prepared by radiation induced grafting polymerization of an epoxy group containing Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto an existing polyethylene porous hollow-fiber membrane. Ampholyte ion-exchanged alkalic group, $-NH_2$ (amine function) of Taurine (TAU) is reacted with glycidyl of GMA for the synthesis of stable membrane. However, Sodium sulfite (SS) membrane is also prepared by making chemical bonds with GMA of porous hollow-fiber membrane for the comparison of adsorption characteristic of metallic ions. These are called as TAU and SS membranes, respectively. It is shown that TAU membrane shows a steady flux, 0.9 m/h regardless of the density of TAU, while the flux of SS membrane decreases rapidly as the density of $SO_3H$ group increases. SS membrane showed a negligible flux. TAU membrane with the density 0.8 mmol/g shows the amount of metallic ions adsorbed in the following order, Cu > Cd > Mg > Sb > Pb. In general, TAU membrane with high density and reaction time showed the high amount of metallic ions adsorbed and flux.
The leading countries in nuclear technology development are concentrating their efforts on the development of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor, which is one of the Generation-IV nuclear reactor systems characterized by a sustainability, an enhanced safety, proliferation resistance, and improved economics. Especially, the Republic of Korea is developing a Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor equipped with metallic-fuel. This type of fast reactor has superior inherent safety and passive safety characteristics. Further, sodium-cooled fast reactors enable the reuse of spent fuel and the closing of fuel cycle, thus, it increases the sustainability of nuclear energy. Many countries are planning the deployment of sodium-cooled fast reactors before 2050 in their energy mix.
We report optical ab-plane properties of the layered sodium cobaltate, $Na_xCoO_2$ for x = 0.35 and 0.75. Two samples show metallic behaviors according to dc resistivity transport. Overall temperature dependent optical conductivities of both samples are very similar to those of the high temperature superconducting underdoped cuprates. We found that the optical scattering rate of x = 0.75 sample, which is in a Curie-Weiss metallic phase, varies linearly (non-Fermi liquid) with frequency and temperature while that of x = 0.35 sample, which is in a paramagnetic metallic phase, varies quadratically (Fermi liquid) with frequency and temperature. Both x = 0.35 and 0.75 samples have an onset of scattering around $600\;cm^{-1}$ which can be attributed to the interaction of charge carriers with a bosonic collective mode in a system.
The time-lag-effect of alkali salts on the gelation of sodium alginate-$CaSO_4{\cdot}$1/2 $H_2O$ is compared with Miyake's data, and then the formation rate of the elastics measured by the continuous method (an improved Schwedoff's method) and the change of rigidity with metallic oxides are studied as follows: (1) The gelation processes of sodium alginate and $CaSO_4{\cdot}$1/2 $H_2O$-aqueous sol are studied by measuring, continuously the increases of tensions ofsamples. (2) The time-lag-effect of $Na_3PO_4$ on the formation rate of the elastic gel is larger than that of $Na_2CO_3$, but the difference between the effects of the two alkali salts on the rate is found not so greater than predicted in Miyake's data. (3) Any regularities of the effect on the rate by metallic oxides are not observed. The increasing effects of the rates of $SiO_2$ and MgO are relatively large, and that of ZnO is relatively small. However, $Al_2O_3$, $Sb_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$show some decreasing effects. As a result it is noted that the regularities do not depend on the effect of oxide species and their amounts. (4) It is not found proportionality between the rigidity and the gelation rate. However, the increasing effect of the rigidity with the addition of metallic oxides can be observed. The rigidity increasing rate of MgO is the largest of them.

The alkenylation of o-xylene with 1,3-butadiene to make OTP(ortho-tolyl Pentene) was carried out over liquid phase NaK alloy, Na metal and the metallic sodium dispersed on the specific support such as NaX and $Al_2O_3$. Liquid phase NaK alloy showed the improved conversion and selectivity when they were pretreated by ultrasound to increase the dispersion. For the case of metallic sodium, the induction period for the formation of homogeneous metal sodium solution with high dispersion was needed before the reaction. In the case of metallic sodium dispersed on support, more than 80 % conversion could be obtained without induction period regardless of supports used. But 85 % of the metallic sodium was resolved into the reaction mixture after reaction for 7 hours. The amount of byproducts, oligomers, produced from OTP and 1,3-butadiene increased with the amount of 1,3-butadiene introduced and the selectivity to OTP was in inversely proportional to the conversion.
The separation of metallic and semiconducting single-wall carbon nanobubes (SWCNTs) by agarose gel method was carried out in this study. The effect of concentration of agarose, SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate), and pH in the solution on separation behavior was investigated. With increasing the concentration of agarose in the solution, it showed that the ratio of metallic SWCNTs, which was analyzed from UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, was increased in the solution phase, while the overall concentration of SWCNTs was decreased. With increasing the concentration of SDS, we could observe that the ratio of metallic SWCNTs was increased due to more affinity between SDS molecules and metallic SWCNT. The highest metallic SWCNTs ratio was reached up to 58.4% when the pH of solution was 8.2.
