Deposition of thin films using magnetron sputtering plasmas is a well-developed, classical technology. However, detailed investigations using advanced diagnostics are insufficient in magnetron sputtering, in comparison with plasma-aided dry etching and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. In this talk, we will show examples of diagnostic works on magnetron sputtering employing metal targets. Diagnostic methods which have fine spatial resolutions are suitable for magnetron sputtering plasmas since they have significant spatial distributions. We are using two-dimensional laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, in which the plasma space is illuminated by a tunable laser beam with a planer shape. A charge-coupled device camera with a gated image intensifier is used for taking the picture of the image of laser-induced fluorescence formed on the planer laser beam. The picture of laser-induced fluorescence directly represents the two-dimensional distribution of the atom density probed by the tunable laser beam, when an intense laser with a relatively wide line-width is used. When a weak laser beam with a relatively narrow linewidth is used, the laser-induced fluorescence represents the density distribution of atoms which feel the laser wavelength to be resonant via the Doppler shift corresponding to their velocities. In this case, we can obtain the velocity distribution function of atoms by scanning the wavelength of the laser beam around the line center.

ZnO nanowlres (NWs) were fabricated using Au as catalyst for a method combining laser ablation cluster formation and vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth. The target used in synthesis was pure ZnO ceramics. Two different substrates were used; (0001)-oriented sapphires and Au-coated sapphires. The Au thin film was deposited by thermal evaporation and the thickness was about 50 ${\AA}$. ZnO NWs were only formed in case of that used catalyst metal. Field effect scanning electron microscopic (FESEM) investigation showed that the average diameter of ZnO NWs was about 70 nm and the typical lengths varied from $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$.

Many studies have used chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to grow graphene. However, CVD is inefficient in terms of production costs, and inefficient for mass production because a transfer process using a catalytic metal is needed. In this study, graphene thin films were grown on single crystal sapphire substrates without a catalytic metal, using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to resolve these problems. In addition, the growth of graphene using PLD was confirmed to have a close relationship with the substrate temperature.

Direct laser vaporization of transition-metal(Co, Ni)/graphite composite pellet produced single wall carbon naotubes(SWNT) in the condensing vapor in a heated flow cylinder-type tube furnace, Transition metal/graphite composite pellet target was made by mixing graphite, Co, and Ni in 98:1:1 atomic weight ratios, pressing the mixed powder, and curing it. The target was placed in a tube furnace maintained at 1200$^{\circ}C$ and Ar inert collision gas continuously flowed into the tube. The 2nd harmonic, 532nm wavelength light from Nd-YAG laser was used to vaporize the tube. The carbon nanotubes produced by the laser vaporization were accumulated on quartz tube wall. The raw carbon nanotube materials were purified with surfactants(Triton X-100) in a ultrasonicator. These carbon nanotubes were analyzed using SEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopic method. The carbon nanotube growth on the Ni-patterned Si substrate was investigated by the CVD process. Transition-metal, Ni and CH4 gas were used as a catalyst and a reactant gas, respectively. The structure and the phonon frequencies of the carbon nanotubes formed on the patterned Si substrate were measured by SEM and Raman spectrometer.
An air-cooled discharge-heated copper-vapor laser system with its inter-electrode distance of 45 cm has been developed by utilizing an alumina ceramic plasma tube of 1.6 cm in diameter and 50 cm in lengih. For operating the laser, a dc high voltage power supply with output rating of 6 kV and 500 mA, a resonant charging circuitry consisting partly of an 1.8 H inductor assembly and a 5 nF storage capacitor, and a thyratron driver operating up to 7 kHz have also been developed. The present laser system starts lasing at the tube temperature of about $1350^{\circ}C$ and an maximum average output power of 0.7 W has been obtained at 12 kV, 4.5 kHz. 50 mbar of Ne buffer gas pressure, and at the tube temperature of $1460^{\circ}C$.

In this study, the deposition of micrometer-scale metallic interconnects on LCD glass for the repair of open-circuit type defects is investigated. Although there had been a few studies Since 1980 s for the deposition of metallic interconnects by laser-induced chemical vapor deposition, those studies mostly used continuous wave lasers. In this work, a third harmonic Nd:YLF laser (351nm) of high repetition rates, up to 10 KHz, was used as the illumination source and $W(CO)_6$ was selected as the precursor. General characteristics of the metal deposit (tungsten) such as height, width, morphology as well as electrical properties were examined for various process conditions. Height of the deposited tungsten lines ranged from 35 to 500 nm depending on laser power and scan speed while the width was controlled between $3\~50{\mu}$ using a slit placed in the beam path. The resistivity of the deposited tungsten lines was measured to be below 1 $O\cdot{\mu}m$, which is an acceptable value according to the manufacturing standard. The tungsten lines produced at high scan speed had good surface morphology with little particles around the patterns. Experimental results demonstrated that it is likely that the deposit forms through a hybrid process, namely through the combination of photolytic and pyrolytic mechanisms.

The spatter and porosity could be occurred during$CO_2$CW laser welding of Primer- coated steel for shipbuilding. This study has suggested an alternative idea by examining of weld-defect formation mechanism. The primer-coated plate induced the spatter humping bead and porosity and these are main part of the welding defect. attributed to the powerful vaporizing pressure of primer attached on the base metal The zinc of Primer has a boiling point that is the lower temperature than melting point of steel zinc vapor will build up at the interface between the two sheets and this tends to deteriorate the quality of the weld by ejecting weld material from lap position or leaving porosity. Therefore introducing a small gap clearance in the lap position. the zinc vapor could escape through it and sound weld beads can be acquired. In conclusion, we suggested the occurred and prevented mechanism of weld defects with searching the factor.

A double-heterostructure mesa-stripe-geometry laser diode integrated with thermoelectric Peltier cooler has been designed and fabricated. Epi-layers have been grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD) method. Peltier cooling effect has been measured for devices with a mesa width of 14$\mu$m and a cavity length of 380$\mu$m. The effects of thermoelectric cooling could be shown by measuring the optical output of the laser with the increase of the current in the thermoelectric cooler. While the input courrent of the laser was maintained at 250mA, the optical output was decreased from 4.8mW to 3.8mW due to heating, but with the thermoelectric cooler on the optical output power was recovered by more than 40%. The results show that the complicated cooling device is not needed since the cooling can be achevied by the developement of the fabrication processing.
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the formation mechanisms of imperfections such as irregular humps, outer cavity and inner cavity in the laser fusion zone of diamond saw blade. Laser beam welding was conducted to join two parts of blade; mild steel shank and Fe-Co-Ni sintered tip. The variables were beam power and travel speed. The microstructure and elements distributions of specimens were analyzed with SEM, AES, EPMA and so on. It was found that these imperfections were responded to heat input. Irregular humps were reduced in 10.4∼17.6kJ/m heat input range. However there were no clear evidences, which could explain the relations between humps formation and heat input. The number of outer cavity and inner cavity decreased as heat input was increased. Considering both possible defects formations mechanisms, it could be thought that outer cavity was caused by insufficient refill of keyhole, which was from rapid solidification of molten metal and fast molten metal flow to the rear keyhole wall at low heat input. More inner cavities were found near the interface of the fusion zone and sintered segment and in the bottom of the fusion zone. Inner cavity was mainly formed in the upper fusion zone at high heat input whereas was in the bottom at low heat input. Inner cavity was from trapping of coarsened preexist pores in the sintered tip and metal vapor due to rapid solidification of molten metal before the bubbles escaped.
