The major and trace constituents of Mongolian chromite were analyzed by ICP-AES. The dissolution procedures, mixed acid ($HClO_4+H_3PO_4$) digestion and fusion with $Na_2O_2$ flux, have been studied to dissolve the chromite. The optimum dissolution method was found to be a fusion with $Na_2O_2$ flux. The effect of large amount of Na on major and trace constituents was examined when these elements were determined by ICP-AES. There was no effect on major elements at a concentration of Na 250 mg/L solution. The emission intensity of trace constituents containing Na 1,250 mg/L decreased to 1.0-5.2% according to elements and wavelengths. The result of this method was compared with that of neutron activation analysis (NAA) to confirm the accuracy of this procedure. The results between two methods were in a good agreement within less than 5% for $Al_2O_3$, $Cr_2O_3$, MgO and -20 to 8% for Co, Mn, V, Zn, respectively.

Adsorption and oxidation of polychlorinated phenols by suspended ${\sigma}-MnO_2$ in aqueous solution have been studied. Of the proposed mechanism, adsorption reaction of chlorophenols onto ${\sigma}-MnO_2$(s) depended upon the pH of the solution and the concentration of chlorophenol. Adsorption isotherms showed a reasonably good fit to the Langmuir isotherm. From the pH dependence of adsorption partition coefficient and the linear relationship between octanol-water partition coefficient and adsorption partiton coefficient of chlorophenol, it is estimated that adsorption is dominated by its hydrophobicity. The rate of electron transfer reaction evaluated from the rate of reductive dissolution of ${\sigma}-MnO_2$(s) depended linearly upon the concentration of chlorophenol and the pH of medium. Observed rate constants ($K_0$) of the meta-substituted chlorophenol were lower than that of the ortho-or para-chlorophenol because of resonance effect of chlorophenoxy radical. It is indicated that this radical is produced in the adsorption process and the electron transfer reaction is rate determining.
The smectite-illite (SI) reaction is a ubiquitous process in siliciclastic sedimentary environments. For the last 4 decades the importance of smectite to illite (S-I) reaction was described in research papers and reports, as the degree of the (S-I) reaction, termed "smectite illitization", is linked to the exploration of hydrocarbons, and geochemical/petrophysical indicators. The S-I transformation has been thought that the reaction, explained either by layer-by-layer mechanism in the solid state or dissolution/reprecipitation process, was entirely abiotic and to require burial, heat, and time to proceed, however few studies have taken into account the bacterial activity. Recent laboratory studies showed evidence suggesting that the structural ferric iron (Fe(III)) in clay minerals can be reduced by microbial activity and the role of microorganisms is to link organic matter oxidation to metal reduction, resulting in the S-I transformation. In abiotic systems, elevated temperatures are typically used in laboratory experiments to accelerate the smectite to illite reaction in order to compensate for a long geological time in nature. However, in biotic systems, bacteria may catalyze the reaction and elevated temperature or prolonged time may not be necessary. Despite the important role of microbe in S-I reaction, factors that control the reaction mechanism are not clearly addressed yet. This paper, therefore, overviews the current status of microbially mediated smectite-to-illite reaction studies and characterization techniques.
Tailings of Dukum mine in the vadose and saturated zone were investigated to reveal the mobility of metal elements and the condition of mineralogical solubility according to redox environments throughout the geochemical analysis, thermodynamic modelling, and mineralogical study for solid-samples and water samples(vadose zone; distilled water: tailings=5 : 1 reacted, saturated zone; pore-water extracted). In the vadose zone, sulfide oxidation has generated low-pH(2.72∼6.91) condition and high concentration levels of S $O_4$$^{2-}$(561∼1430mg/L) and other metals(Zn : 0.12∼l57 mg/L, Pb : 0.06∼0.83 mg/L, Cd : 0.06∼l.35 mg/L). Jarosite$(KFe_3(SO_4)_2(OH)_6)$ and gypsum$(CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) were identified on XRD patterns and thermodynamics modelling. In the saturated zone, concentration of metal ions decreased because pH values were neutral(7.25∼8.10). But Fe and Mn susceptible to redox potential increased by low-pe values(7.40∼3.40) as the depth increased. Rhodochrosite$(MnCO_3)$ identified by XRD and thermodynamics modelling suggested that $Mn^{4+}$ or $Mn^{3+}$ was reduced to $Mn^{2+}$. Along pH conditions, concentrations of dissolved metal ions has been most abundant in vadose zone throughout borehole samples. It was observed that pH had more effect on metal solubilities than redox potential. How-ever, the release of co-precipitated heavy metals following the dissolution of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides could be the mechanism by which reduced condition affected heavy metal solubility considering the decrease of pe as depth increased in tile saturated zone.
This study reports on the efficiency of cleaning enameled magnet wire using a sulfuric acid $H_2SO_4$ and removal of dissolved organic material using hydrogen peroxide $H_2O_2$ and nitric acid $HNO_3$ at $80^{\circ}C$. The method involves the addition of pure $H_2SO_4$ and $H_2O_2$ or $HNO_3$. Layers of enameled organic material were dissolved by 90% $H_2SO_4$ and the solution was maintained as 35% $H_2O_2$ or 60% $HNO_3$. $H_2O_2$ content in aqueous $H_2O_2$ was maintained as 8.8 : 1.0. An initial concentration of $H_2SO_4$ in dissolution conditions was accomplished within 15 min, with a stripping time of about 2 h. The concentrations of $H_2O_2$ and $HNO_3$ in the processing bath were relatively low, but sufficient enough to produce an effective amount of power in the bath for the removal of the enamel material. The cleaning effect of enameled organic material involves the dehydration by $H_2SO_4$ and the oxidation by $H_2O_2$ or $HNO_3$.
In this study, the solubility of Cu, which is a main metal component of wasted PCB, in $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO$ slag system was investigated. Each 20 grams of Cu chips and the quaternary slag manufactured was placed in an carbon crucible and melted for 10 hours in the temperature between 1673 K and 1825 K to confirm the equilibrium state. The oxygen partial pressure was controlled by the ratio of CO and Ar gas in the range of $10^{-17.23}$ to $10^{-15.83}$ atm. The concentration of Cu in the slag increased with increasing oxygen partial pressure, slag basicity, and MgO content in the slag. The concentration of Cu in the slag decreased with increasing temperature. The Cu dissolution reaction in the slag is an exothermic reaction.
In order to improve polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) durability, the durability of membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), in which the electrochemical reactions actually occur, is one of the vital issues. Many articles have dealt with catalyst layer degradation of the durability-related factors on MEAs in relation to loss of catalyst surface area caused by agglomeration, dissolution, migration, formation of metal complexes and oxides, and/or instability of the carbon support. Degradation of catalyst layer during long-term operation includes cracking or delamination of the layer which result either from change in the catalyst microstructure or loss of electronic or ionic contact with the active surface, can result in apparent activity loss in the catalyst layer. Membrane degradation of the durability-related factors on MEAs can be caused by mechanical or thermal stress resulting in formation of pinholes and tears and/or by chemical attack of hydrogen peroxide radicals formed during the electrochemical reactions. All of these effects, the mechanical damage of membrane and degradation of catalyst layers are more facilitated by uneven stress or improper MEA fabrication process. In order to improve the PEMFC durability, therefore, it is most important to minimize the uneven stress or improper MEA fabrication process in the course of the fabrication of MEA. We analyzed the effects of the MEA fabrication condition on the PEMFC durability with MEA produced using CCM (catalyst coated membrane) method. This paper also investigated the effects of MEA fabrication condition on the PEMFC durability by adding additional treatment process, hot pressing and pressing, on the MEA produced using CCM method.

A new 80Ti-15Ta-5Zr wt% alloy surface was protected by anodic oxidation in phosphoric acid solution. The protective oxide layer (TiO2, ZrO2 and Ta suboxides and thickness of 15.5 nm) incorporated $PO{_4}^{3-}$ ions from the solution, according to high resolution XPS spectra. The AFM analysis determined a high roughness with SEM detected pores (20 - 50 nm). The electrochemical studies of bare and anodically oxidized Ti-15Ta-5Zr alloy in Carter-Brugirard saliva of different pH values and saliva with 0.05M NaF, pointed to a nobler surface for the protected alloy, with a thicker electrodeposited oxide layer acting as a barrier against aggressive ions. The oxidized alloy significantly decreased corrosion current densities and total quantity of ions released into the oral environment in comparison with the bare one, at higher polarisation resistance and protective capacity of the electrodeposited layer. The impedance data revealed a bi-layered oxidation film formed by: a dense, compact, barrier layer in contact with the metallic substrate, decreasing the potential gradient across the metal/oxide layer/solution interface, reducing the anodic dissolution and a more permissive, porous layer in contact with the electrolyte. The open circuit potential for protected alloy shifted to nobler values, with thickening of the oxidation film signifying long-term protection.
We investigate the electrocatalytic activities for oxygen reduction at nanoporous gold (NPG) surfaces fabricated by selective dissolution of Ag from electrodeposited Ag-Au layers on electrode surfaces. The structure of NPG was controlled by changing the concentration ratios of precursor metal complexes during the electrodeposition of Ag-Au layers and the corresponding surface morphology and surface area was examined. NPG structures with Ag/Au ratio of 2.0 exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction, where the nanoporous structure plays a key role, but the surface area does not affect on the electrocatalytic activity. The mechanism of electroreduction of oxygen was investigated by rotating disk electrode techniques. In acidic media, oxygen was first reduced to hydrogen peroxide followed by further reduction to water through 2-step 4-electron mechanism, whereas the oxygen was reduced directly to water by 4-electron mechanism in basic media.

Material degradation of Cr steels in using for boiler tubes was studied in the relation of microstructural changes like carbide behavior and mechanical properties of hardness and creep-rupture life. The carbide dissolution was occurred in 2Cr steel of T22 during high temperature operation. And the grain refinement within martensite lath of 12Cr steel of X20 was derived by the high temperature-long time exposure. But the specific phenomena of material degradation which might be represented by hardness or creep-rupture time of the used tubes were not shown in all the tubes of T22 and X20 even in the fire-side using.
