Since 1980's, many mines have been closed and abandoned due to the exhaustion of deposits and declining prices of international mineral resources. Because of the lack of post management for these abandoned mines, Farm land and rivers were contaminated with heavy metal ions and sludge. We studied on the solidification/stabilization of heavy metal ions, chromium ions and lead ions, using magnesia-phosphate cement. Magnesia binders were used calcined-magnesia and dead-burned magnesia. Test specimens were prepared by mixing magnesia binder with chromium ions and lead ions and activators. We analyzed the hydrates by reaction between magnesiaphosphate cement and each heavy metal ions by XRD and SEM-EDAX, and analyzed the content of heavy metal ions in the eruption water from the specimens for the solidification and stabilization of heavy metal ions by ICP. The results was shown that calcined magnesia binder is effective in stabilization for chromium ions and dead-burned magnesia binder is effective in stabilization for lead ions.
The Ni-base superalloy GTD111 DS is used in the first stage blade of high power land-based gas turbines. Advanced repair technologies of the blade have been introduced to the gas turbine industry over recent years. The effect of the filler metal powder on Transient Liquid Phase bonding phenomenon and tensile mechanical properties was investigated on the GTD111 DS superalloy. At the filler metal powder N series, the base metal powders fully melted at the initial time and a large amount of the base metal near the bonded interlayer was dissolved by liquid inter metal. Liquid filler metal powder was eliminated by isothermal solidification which was controlled by the diffusion of B into the base metal. The solids in the bonded interlayer grew from the base metal near the bonded interlayer inward the insert metal during the isothermal solidification. The bond strength of N series filler metal powder was over 1000 MPa. and ${\gamma}'$ phase size of N series TLP bonded region was similar with base metal by influence of Ti, Al elements. At the insert metal powder M series, the Si element fluidity of the filler metal was good but microstructure irregularity on bonded region because of excessive Si element. Nuclear of solids formed not only from the base metal near the bonded interlayer but also from the remained filler metal powder in the bonded interlayer. When the isothermal solidification was finished, the content of the elements in the boned interlayer was approximately equal to that of the base metal. But boride and silicide formed in the base metal near the bonded interlayer. And these boride decreased with the increasing of holding time. The bond strength of M series filler metal powder was about 400 MPa.
This study was subjected to the stabilization of heavy metals using DSp cement. Heavy metal Cr and Pb ions were mixed with cement paste and hydration behavior and leaching property by heavy metal were exami-ned. It was found that, Cr ion accelerated the early hydration of the cement and has no accelerating effect in later hydration period. However Pb ion retarded the hydration of the cement for a early hydration periods. As a result of leaching test the quantity of leachant has a very low value and the influence of leached heavy metal effected on the environments is very weak.
This paper presents a study of the solder bumping process. The theoretical model, based on the variational principle instead of solving the Navier-Stokes equation with moving boundaries, was developed to considered the energy dissipation in semi-solid phase and the approximate solidification time of the molten metal droplet. The simulation results revealed that the developed model could reasonably describe the collision behavior of molten metal with solid surface. Simulations were made with variation of initial droplet temperature, substrate metal and initial substrate temerature.

The processes for the smelting of a metal product and the solidification of a molten salt were developed respectively to treat the products from the electrochemical reduction process. The method for the separation of a metal product in a magnesia container from the residual. salt and consequent smelting of it to a metal ingot by the multi step heating in vacuum was proposed. The new concept using a dual vessel and a salt valve was also suggested for the solidification of a molten salt into a regular size and shape which is suitable for the transport and measurement. The results obtained in the study will be applied to the design of the hot cell demonstration system of the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process of KAERI.
This article aims to introduce the synchrotron radiation for its utilization in the casting and solidification fields as an unique tool for observation of real time phenomena of molten metal during solidification. General features of the synchrotron radiation were briefly introduced for readers in the casting and solidification fields, with no background regarding to synchrotron radiation. And basic principles of imaging technologies using synchrotron light for in-situ observation of molten metal were explained together with exemplary research works, which were reported on the casting and solidification fields in recent years. As a practical guide, real time observation of Al-Si casting alloy was introduced with experimental facilities, image acquisition, and processing together with representative results.
Stainless steel are widely applicable in various engineering fields for its exellent corrosion and impact ressistance. Austenitic weld metal has some ferrite for preventing solidification cracking by ASME specification. Several family of austenic stainless steel contains varying ferrite contents. But ferrite in austenic stainless steels is adversely affect weld metal toughness and since fully austenic grades are known to have good toughness. Austenic stainless steel has various alloying addition for improving corrosion resistance, impact toughness and solidification crack resistance. The effect of various alloying elements are not found to be clear in present. From this view of point, this study tried to establish the criteria of alloy design for austenic stainless steel by controlling primary solidification mode and clarifying the effect of several alloying elements.
Welding characteristics of STS304 stainless steel and Inconel 600 using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser are experimentally investigated. Alloy 600 being used in steam generator tubing of pressurized water reactor(PWR) exposed to some corrosion environment, stress corrosion cracking can occur on this material. Presented here are the results from a series of experiments in which dissimilar metal welds were made using the gas tungsten arc welding process with pure argon shielding gas. But It is well known that solidification cracking susceptibility of austenitic alloys depends on the solidification temperature range and amount/distribution of solute rich liquid that exists at the terminal stages of solidification. An experimental study was conducted to determine effects of welding parameters and to optimize those parameters that have the most influence on eliminating or reducing the extent welding zone formation at dissimilar metal welds.
The bonding phenomenon and mechanism in the transient liquid phase bonding(TLP Bonding) of directionally solidified Ni base superalloy, GTD-111 was investigated. At the bonding temperature of 1403K, liquid insert metal was eliminated by isothermal solidification which was controlled by the diffusion of B and Si into the base metal and solids in the bonded interlayer grew epitaxially from mating base metal inward the insert metal. The number of grain boundaries formed at the bonded interlayer was corresponded with those of base metal. The liquation of grain boundary and dendrite boundary occurred at 1433K. At the bonding temperature of 1453K which is higher than liquation temperature of grain boundary, liquids of the Insert metal were connected with liquated grain boundaries and compositions in each region mixed mutually. In Joints held for various time at 1453t phases formed at liquated grain boundary far from the interface were similar to those of bonded interlayer. With prolonged holding time, liquid phases decreased gradually and liquids of continuous band shape divided many island shape. But liquid phases did not disappeared after holding for 7.2ks at 1453k. Isothermal solidification process at the bonding temperature which is higher than the liquation temperature of the grain boundary was controlled by diffusion of Ti to be result in liquation than B or Si. in insert metal. An algorithm for modeling the filling of metal into a mold and solidification has been developed. This algorithm uses the implicit VOF method for a filling and a general implicit source-based method for solidification. The model for simultaneous filling and solidification is applied to the two-dimensional filling and solidification of a square cavity. The effects of the wall temperature and gate position on the solidification are examined. The mixed natural convection flow and residual flow resulting from the completion of a filling are included in this study to investigate the coupled effects of the filling and natural convection on solidification. Two different filling configurations (assisting flow and opposite flow due to the gate position) are analysed to study the effects of residual flow on solidification. The results clearly show the necessity to carry out a coupled filling and solidification analysis including the effect of natural convection.
