  • Macrocyclic ligands have been studied as cation carriers in a supported liquid membrane system. Cd2+ has been transported using nitrogen substituted macrocycles as carriers and several divalent metal ions (M2+=Zn, Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Mg, Ca, and Sr) have been transported using DBN3O2, DBN2O2and PolyNtnoen as carriers in a supported liquid membrane system. Competitive Cd2+-M2+ transport studies have also been carried out with the same system. Ligand structure, stability constant, membrane solvent and carrier concentration are also important parameters in the transport of metal ions.

  • Adsorption capacities of toxic heavy metal ions using as-received carbon(AC), single and double surface-modified activated carbon(OAC and DSMC) in wide pH ranges are extensively evaluated. Physical and chemical properties of surface-modified activated carbons are evaluated through BET analysis, surface acidity and oxides measurements. Based oil tile adsorption isotherms of Pb, Cd and Cr ions by AC, OAC and DSMC, the adsorption amount on DSMC was obviously higher than that on the other carbons. Breakthrough behaviors of ternary metal ions in a column packed with three kinds of carbon were also characterized with respect to the variations of the influent pH and concentration. The adsorption capacity of DSMC in a fixed bed stood a favorable comparison with that of as-received carbon.

  • In order to examine the influences of diluent, DVB, and ligand content, in the adsorption velocities and capacities of chelating resins to heaw metal ions, the chelating resins containing the PO$_3$H, amide, and PO$_3$H+amide were prepared from AN-STR-DVB copolymer. The adsorption capacities of chelating resins were measured by ICP-AES. The major results of the studies are as follows: The optimized compositions of the chelating resins having the highest adsorptivity for the heavy metal ions were found to be DVB=7 wt%, toluene= 100 vol%. The adsorption rate of the chelating resins to the heaw metal ions was PO$_3$H > PO$_3$H+Amide > Amide in order.

  • Spherical-shape melanin nanoparticles with good water-dispersibility were successfully synthesized by a simple oxidation polymerization of 3,4-dihydroxy-phenylalanin (DOPA) with $KMnO_4$. Similar features to those known from natural and synthetic melanin polymers were observed from prepared melanin nanoparticles by FT-IR, UV-Vis., and ESR spectroscopic methods. Their binding ability with several heavy metal ions from aqueous solution was quantitatively investigated, and the maximum binding capacities with melanin nanoparticles to lead, copper, and cadmium ions were obtained as 2.45, 2.17 and 1.88 mmol/g, respectively, which are much larger values than those reported from natural and synthetic melanin polymers. The large binding capacity and fast binding rate of melanin nanoparticles to metal ions can make them an excellent candidate for the remediation of contaminated water.

  • We synthesized the polymer that can have function group and improvement of mechnical strength and then confirmed the possibility of molecular device made by LB method. In this paper, the $\pi$-A isotherm has been investigated as to the kinds and various concentrations of the metal ions complexed with imidazole group. The experimental results for the electrical properties of MIM fabricated has been obtained as following. There is no change in limiting area as to the kinds of the metal ions, also the shift of conductivity as to the metal ions couldn't be observed, which was 10$\^$-14/[S/cm]. There are some changes in limiting area as to the concentration of the metal ions, the conductivity shift was increased with the occupied molecular area.

  • Effect of stripping solutions on the Duolite GT-73 chelating resin for ten elements, Ag(I), Al(III), Ca(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), Fe(II), Hg(II), Mn(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II), was investigated. Relation between affinities of the metal ions and solubility products of metal sulfides was studied. The smaller the solubility product of metal sulfideis, the larger the affinitie with the ionsis. The ions which have the solubility products larger than $10^{-23}$ could be effectively desorbed with nitric acid. Complexation with chloride ion enhanced the desorption efficiencies of the ions having moderately strong affinity with the resin. The ions which have very strong affinity by the chelating resin can be desorbed by complextion with thiourea and hydrochloric acid.

  • The quantitative trace analysis of ions could be deteriorated by filter papers because of the effect of adsorption. Generally the adsorption of anions on filter paper did not occurred. Instead, $Cl^-$ and $NO{_3}^-$ ions were extracted from the filter papers. However, most metal ions were adsorbed on the filter papers by the formation of hydroxide in neutral solution. The adsorption of metal ions except $Ag^+$ ion could be avoided depend on the acid concentrations.

  • A lab-made chemiluminescence system with air pump was developed for monitoring of some metal levels in rain. The air pump enabled injection of 17.7 $\mu$g samples into a glass cell filled with luminol-$H_2O_2$ reagent of typically 300 $\mu$L for chemiluminescence measurement. The monitored trend of total metal ions in the rain collected in our campus was compared with analytical results of each metal ion from GFAAS. The system was also demonstrated to determine $Cr^{6+}$ by reduction to $Cr^{3+}$ using $SnCl_2$. The limit of detection for $Cr^{6+}$ obtained by 4 measurements was 85.0 pg $mL^{-1}$ with a relative standard deviation of 3.4%. Although this system doesn’t have selectivity due to the characteristics of chemiluminescence, application of it to environmental monitoring as a sensor for some transition metal ions was demonstrated.

  • Removal of heavy metal ions (Cd$^{2+}$, Cr$^{3+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, Pb$^{2+}$) by several chitosans was studied and the molecular weight of chitosan was investigated in order to examine the effect of autoclaving. Chitosan were divided into 3 groups (A type, controlled chitosan; B type, autoclaved for 15 min; C type, autoclaved for 60 min). The heavy metal removal capacity and rate of B type chitosan were higher than those of A type and B type chitosan. The molecular weight of chitosan was decreased by the increase of autoclaving time. Therefore, the heavy metal capacity was not well correlated to the molecular weight. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm was determined from the experimental results of equilibrium adsorption for individual heavy metal ions on chitosan. Langmuir isotherm was well fitted to this experimental data. The heavy metal removal capacity of B type chitosan was in the order of Pb$^{2+}$ > Cu$^{2+}$ > Cd$^{2+}$> Cr$^{3+}$.3+/.$.3+/.

  • Rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for the reactions of alkali metal ethoxides (EtOM) with S-p-nitrophenyl 2-thiofuroate (1b) and 2-thiophenethiocarboxylate (2b) in absolute ethanol at 25.0±0.1 ℃. 1b is observed to be more reactive than 2b toward all the EtOM studied. The reactivity of EtOM is in the order EtOK > EtONa > EtO- > EtOLi for both substrates, indicating that K+ and Na+ behave as a catalyst while Li+ acts as an inhibitor in the present system. Equilibrium association constants of alkali metal ions with the transition state (KaTS) have been calculated from the known equilibrium association constants of alkali metal ion with ethoxide ion (Ka) and the rate constants for the reactions of EtOM with 1b and 2b. The catalytic effect (KaTS/Ka) is larger for the reaction of 1b than 2b, and decreases with decreasing the size of the alkali metal ions. Formation of 5-membered chelation at the transition state appears to be responsible for the catalytic effect.
