  • Purpose: To investigate the correlation between the amount of salivary metal ions released from fixed prostheses and the period of restoration insertion, and to evaluate the correlation between the type and amount of metal ions in saliva and oral lesions (OL). Methods: Based on the oldest prosthesis, we divided patients into two groups: more than 5 years (n=19) and less than 5 years (n=10). Patients were also divided into two groups by another criteria: the one with the presence (n=15), and the one with absence (n=14) of OL, and the amounts of metal ions were examined. Metal ions-gold (Au), copper, cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel, zinc, aluminum, palladium (Pd), tin, and platinum (Pt)-were measured using laser ablation microprobe inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results: Significantly higher quantities of Co, Pt, and Pd ions were released in patients with fixed prosthesis of more than 5 years (p<0.05). Measurement of the average amount of salivary metal ions was performed on patients with and without OL - Significantly higher amounts of Cr, Pd and Au ions were released in patients with OL (p<0.05). Conclusions: Old prostheses (${\geq}5years$) released metal ions, and among them were Co, Pt and Pd ions more than others. Patients with OL showed significantly higher levels of ion release, especially Cr, Pd and Au. There was a positive correlation between the amount of a certain kind of released metal ions, especially Pd, and the development of OL. Salivary Pd ion released from old prostheses could affect the pathogenesis of OL; therefore, long-term follow-up is important.

  • Rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for the reactions of p-and m-nitrophenyl 2-thiophenecarboxylate (5a and 5b, respectively) with alkali metal ethoxides (EtO-M+) in absolute ethanol at 25.0±0.1 ℃. The reactivity of EtO-M+ exhibits dependence on the size of alkali metal ions, i.e. the reactivity of EtO-M+ toward 5a decreases in the order EtO-K+ ≥ EtO-Na+ > EtO-Li+ > EtO-, while the one toward 5b does in the order EtO-Na+ ≥ EtO-K+ > EtO-Li+ > EtO-. This result indicates that ion paired EtO-M+ is more reactive than dissociated EtO-, and alkali metal ions form complexes with the substrate more strongly at the transition state than at the ground state. The catalytic effect shown by alkali metal ions appears to be less significant in the reaction of 5 than in the corresponding reaction of 4, indicating that complexation of alkali metal ions with 5 is not as strong as the one with 4.

  • Cross linked chitosan beads showed high selective adsorption abilities in order of $Au^{3+}$ > $Hg^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Pt^{4+}$ > ${UO_2}^{2+}$ ions in mixed solution of various metal ions at pH 4.5. N-methyltyiobenzylated chitosan beads(MTB-chitosan beads) were prepared treating with p-(methylthio) benzaldehyde after cross linking of chitosan beads to give them a high selectivity in adsorption of metal ions. The MTB-chitosan beads demonstrated their selectivity on precious metals among various metal ions distinctively. Particularly, the MTB-chitosan had a peculiar selective adsorption on $Pd^{2+}$, $Au^{2+}$, and $Hg^{2+}$ions whilst the cross linked chitosan beads showed its high adsorption on $Pd^{2+}$ at pH 1.1. On the other hand, the cross linked chitosan beads showed its superiority in selective adsorption on $Au^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Hg^{2+}$ions to the MTB-chitosan at pH 4.5 of the test solution. Thus metal selectivities were given to chitosan beads through chemical modifications.

  • The purpose of this study is heavy metal absorption of recycled PET(poly ethylene terephatalate) NWF(non woven faric). The results of test are summarized as follows; Heavy metal abworption rates in Ni ions were higher then Zn and Cu ions, whereas heavy metal absorption rates by sulfonation times were not different. The heavy metal absorption times have a higher tendency from 60 min to 120 min. There were significant negative correlations among the amount used CSA(Chloro Sulfuric Acid) and the amount of absorption Zn(r = -0.33784, p < 0.05), Cu(r = -0.61177, p < 0.01) ions, whereas correlations between heavy metal absorption rates and sulfonation times were not significant. There were significant positive correlations among the amount of absorption Zn ions and the amount of absorption Ni(r = 96475, p < 0.014), Cu(r = 0.51614, p < 0.01) ions, likewise the positive correlations between the amount of absorption N ions and the amount of absorption Cu(r = 0.54766) ions were significant(p < 0.01).

  • Biosorption characteristics were investigated to discuss the use of agar entrapped Spirulina to remove of heavy metal ions from polluted waters. Agar immobilized algae were used as bioadsorbent in continuous reactor for heavy metal ions removal. The process solution contains Pb, Cu, and Cd as single ion and binary ions. In the adsorption of single heavy metal ions by agar immobilized Spirulina, the adsorption reached within 1hr and observed diffusion limitation differed from the free algal cell adsorption. The optimum pH for the adsorption of heavy metals was 4.5 but the influence of pH decreased less than that of free algal cell. Also, the adsorption characteristics of single heavy metal ions with agar immobilized Spirulina fitted the BET isotherm. Both of experiments of free algal cell and agar immobilized algae showed higher removal efficiency in the single ion solutions than binary ions solutions. The experimental results in the packed column with agar immobilized algae were over 90% of removal efficiency for the Pb, Cu, and Cd in single ion solutions.

  • Adsorption characteristics on the biomass of Chlorella sp. HA -1 were investigated in binary system with $Pb^2$, $Cu^2$, $Cd^2$, and $Zn^2$ ions. For the adsorption tests of single metal, Langmuir model was showed good correlation for equilibrium data compared to Freundlich model. Maximum metal uptakes increased as follows: $Pb^2$>$Cd^2$>$Zn^2$>$Cu^2$, whereas the affinity showed different trends: $Cu^2$>>$Cd^2$>$Zn^2$>$Pb^2$. In binary metal system, $Cu^2$ ions inhibited sharply the adsorption of other metal ions except $Pb^2$ ions because of the high biosorption affinity of $Cu^2$ ions. In the case of $Cu^2$ and $Pb^2$ system, there was no significant inhibition on metal uptakes. The results of metal adsorption in the binary system could be explained well on the basis of Langmuir parameters evaluated.

  • New protein-based biosensors using fluorescence for the detection heavy metal ions were developed. The detection range of heavy metal ions was between 10$\^$-3/ mM - 1 mM using casein and albumin as a transducer of biosensor, respectively. Casein showed better results for detecting heavy metal ions than albumin. Simple assay method was developed for the selective analysis of the two heavy metal ions by the fluorescence at wavelength of excitation and emission. This method was successfully applied to determining the concentrations Of Co$\^$2+/ and Fe$\^$3+/.

  • The hydrogen ions in poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) membranes substiuted with $Li^+, Na^+, and K^+/ $of monvoalent metal ions, $Mg^{2+}, Ca^{2+} and Ba^{2+}$ of divalent metal ions, and $Al^{3+}$ of trivalent metal ion. In addition, $Li^+ ions were exchanged with varing reaction time. The effects of metal ions exchanged were investigated in terms of methanol permeability -uling diffusion cell. The methanol permeabilies decreased in the sequence of $Na^+, Li^+ and K^+$ and this might be due to the 'Salting-out' effect while the methanol permeabilities for divalent and trivalent ion-substituted membranes were affected by the combined effects of salting-out, eletrostatic crosslinking and extent of metal ion substiution. As for $Li^+$ ions, methanol permeabilities of PVA/SSA membranes decreased in proportion to the degrees of subsituted $Li^+$ ions.

  • The waste biomass of Sacchromyces uvarum, used in fermentation industries to produce ethanol, were studied for their ability to absorb various heavy metal ions. Heavy metal ions studied in this research were Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb. The order of the sorption capacity was Pb>Cu>Co=Cr=Cd>Ni. The living Sacchromyces uvarum exhibited higher metal-uptake capacity than the dead Sacchromyces uvarum. After we compare the uptake capacity of the Sacchromyces uvarum for individual metal ions with for a mixture of them, the following was observed: in the mixed heavy metal solution the uptake capacity was decreased than the one heavy metal solution. The selective uptake was observed when all . the heavy metal ions were dissolved in a mixed solution. The adsorption isotherm modelling was decribed with the Langmuir and Freundlich model. The results were in good agreement with the Langmuir model.
