The aim of this study wasto conduct a quantitative analysis of CT image quality according to an algorithm designed to reduce metal artifacts induced by metal components. Ten baseline images were obtained with the standard filtered back-projection algorithm using spectral detector-based CT and CT ACR 464 phantom, and ten images were also obtained on the identical phantom with the standard filtered back-projection algorithm after inducing metal artifacts. After applying the to raw data from images with metal artifacts, ten additional images for each were obtained by applying the virtual monoenergetic algorithm. Regions of interest were set for polyethylene, bone, acrylic, air, and water located in the CT ACR 464 phantom module 1 to conduct compare the Hounsfield units for each algorithm. The algorithms were individually analyzed using root mean square error, mean absolute error, signal-to-noise ratio, peak signal-to-noise ratio, and structural similarity index to assess the overall image quality. When the Hounsfield units of each algorithm were compared, a significant difference was found between the images with different algorithms (p < .05), and large changes were observed in images using the virtual monoenergetic algorithm in all regions of interest except acrylic. Image quality analysis indices revealed that images with the metal artifact reduction algorithm had the highest resolution, but the structural similarity index was highest for images with the metal artifact reduction algorithm followed by an additional virtual monoenergetic algorithm. In terms of CT images, the metal artifact reduction algorithm was shown to be more effective than the monoenergetic algorithm at reducing metal artifacts, but to obtain quality CT images, it will be important to ascertain the advantages and differences in image qualities of the algorithms, and to apply them effectively.
In the analyzed cardiac CT algorithm applied when comparing the MAR self-made metal artifact reduction in pacemaker inserted phantom degree. Result of comparing the energy value by CT showed a decrease in the CT value in the case of BKG 40 KeV in WSA maximum decreased to 663.2% in the case of 140 KeV BHA were increased a maximum of 56.2%. In addition, the maximum was decreased by approximately 145% based on a 70 KeV artifacts in CT value comparison by type WSA, BHA was to increase up to approximately 46.38%. MAR Algorithm is believed to provide a more quality cardiac CT image if the energy changes, or have the effect that by type and irrespective of reduced metal artifacts occurrence of artifacts applied to the pacemaker when tracking a heart CT scan after inserting MAR algorithm.

OThe purpose of this article was to measure and compare the value of the metal artifact reduction (MAR) algorithm by Dual energy(kVp switching) CT (Computed Tomography) for non using MAR and we introduced new variable Dual energy CT applications through a clinical scan. The used equipment was GE Discovery 750HD with Dual-Energy system(kVp switching). CT scan was performed on the neck and abdomen area subject for patients. Studies were from Dec 20 2010 to Feb 10 2011 and included 25 subject patients with prosthesis. We were measured the HU (Hounsfield Unit) and noise value at metal artifact appear(focal loss of signal and white streak artifact area) according to the using MAR algorithm. Statistical analyses were performed using the paired sample t-test. In patient subject case, the statistical difference of showing HU was p=0.01 and p=0.04 respectively. At maximum black hole artifact area and white streak artifact area according to the using MAR algorithm. However noise was p=0.05 and p=0.04 respectively; and not the affected black hole and white streak artifact area. Dual Energy CT with the MAR algorithm technique is useful reduce metal artifacts and could improve the diagnostic value in the diagnostic image evaluation of metallic implants area.
Purpose: To improve the image quality in positron emission tomography (PET), the attenuation correction technique based on the computed tomography (CT) data is important process. However, the artifact is caused by metal material during PET/CT scan, and the image quality is degraded. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate image quality according to with and without iterative metal artifact reduction (iMAR) algorithm using customized 3D printing phantom. Materials and Methods: The Hoffman and Derenzo phantoms were designed. To protect the gamma ray transmission and express the metal portion, lead substance was located to the surface. The SiPM based PET/CT was used for acquisition of PET images according to application with and without iMAR algorithm. The quantitative methods were used by signal to noise ratio (SNR), coefficient of variation (COV), and contrast to noise ratio (CNR). Results and Discussion: The results shows that the image quality applying iMAR algorithm was higher 1.15, 1.19, and 1.11 times than image quality without iMAR algorithm for SNR, COV, and CNR. Conclusion: In conclusion, the iMAR algorithm was useful for improvement of image quality by reducing the metal artifact lesion.
The study attempted to use computed tomography images to determine the usefulness of the reduction in the axial reduction algorithm in the event of a metallic artifacts reduction in the image of the beam-hardening effect, which is known as the most effective method of reducing metallic artifact reduction in the image and the reduction of the metal produced in this study. As a result, the result is increased to 140 kVp to reduce the value of the CT value by 0.02 to 0.05 %, resulting in decreased axial effect (P > 0.05). The CT value decreased from 12.4 to 26.9 % when applied to the reduction of the metallic. 12.4 to 26.9 % (p<0.05). In addition, in the qualitative assessment by the clinical trial evaluation, it was assessed as 1.8 points after applying the MAR algorithm, In the resolution of resolution and contrast evaluations, the estimation of the decrease in metallic artifact effects was assessed as the metal was assessed to be scored 7.2 points after the MAR algorithm was evaluated. Therefore, in case of artifacts due to irreversible beam hardening effect, it is useful to reduce artifacts caused by beam hardening effect by using various methods derived from existing researches and scanning by applying the metal artifact reduction algorithm proposed in this experiment.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is evaluation for the applicability of O-MAR(Metal artifact Reduction for Orthopedic Implants)(ver. 3.6.0, Philips, Netherlands) in head & neck radiation treatment planning CT with metal artifact created by dental implant. Materials and Methods : All of the in this study's CT images were scanned by Brilliance Big Bore CT(Philips, Netherlands) at 120kVp, 2mm sliced and Metal artifact reduced by O-MAR. To compare the original and reconstructed CT images worked on RTPS(Eclipse ver 10.0.42, Varian, USA). In order to test the basic performance of the O-MAR, The phantom was made to create metal artifact by dental implant and other phantoms used for without artifact images. To measure a difference of HU in with artifact images and without artifact images, homogeneous phantom and inhomogeneous phantoms were used with cerrobend rods. Each of images were compared a difference of HU in ROIs. And also, 1 case of patient's original CT image applied O-MAR and density corrected CT were evaluated for dose distributions with SNC Patient(Sun Nuclear Co., USA). Results : In cases of head&neck phantom, the difference of dose distibution is appeared 99.8% gamma passing rate(criteria 2 mm / 2%) between original and CT images applied O-MAR. And 98.5% appeared in patient case, among original CT, O-MAR and density corrected CT. The difference of total dose distribution is less than 2% that appeared both phantom and patient case study. Though the dose deviations are little, there are still matters to discuss that the dose deviations are concentrated so locally. In this study, The quality of all images applied O-MAR was improved. Unexpectedly, Increase of max. HU was founded in air cavity of the O-MAR images compare to cavity of the original images and wrong corrections were appeared, too. Conclusion : The result of study assuming restrained case of O-MAR adapted to near skin and low density area, it appeared image distortion and artifact correction simultaneously. In O-MAR CT, air cavity area even turned tissue HU by wrong correction was founded, too. Consequentially, It seems O-MAR algorithm is not perfect to distinguish air cavity and photon starvation artifact. Nevertheless, the differences of HU and dose distribution are not a huge that is not suitable for clinical use. And there are more advantages in clinic for improved quality of CT images and DRRs, precision of contouring OARs or tumors and correcting artifact area. So original and O-MAR CT must be used together in clinic for more accurate treatment plan.
Metal material inserted into the body have a large difference in density from human tissues or bones around the Metal during CT scans.. Therefore, the Metal material inserted into the body produces Artifact. Metal Artifact, which occurs around Metals, can degrade the quality of CT images, causing confusion when medical team diagnose lesions. Through this experiment, we confirm that the occurrence of Artifacts decrease by using Dual energy CT and MAR algorithm in Single source Dual energy CT. We also want to present basic data on clinical application methods by comparing and analyzing the characteristics of images obtained by each method. Using GE 750HD CT, artificial implants were scanned using general method and Dual energy. Then we apply the MAR algorithm to each image obtained. And all previously acquired images were compared and analyzed the characteristics of the examination, such as image quality evaluation and dose evaluation. Images with MAR algorithm and Dual Energy confirmed a decrease in Metal Artifact. Images with MAR algorithm have reduced Metal Artifact, but have the disadvantage of distorting the details of artificial joint implants. On the other hand images teseted with Dual Energy have the advantage of being able to implement details than those applied with MAR algorithms, it takes longer to reconstruct the image and the exposure dose was about four times higher than those applied with MAR algorithm. In order to locate Metals, such as the post-operative follow-up period, it is useful to apply MAR algorithm to obtain images. And it is more useful to examine with Dual Energy when micro lesion identification, such as cardiac examination, and surgical planning or when tests are performed in diagnostic way.
We evaluated the effect of high-density aluminum, titanium, and steel metal inserts on computed tomography (CT) numbers and radiation treatment plans for Tomotherapy. CT images were obtained using a cylindrical TomoPhantom comprising cylindrical rods of various densities and metal inserts. Three CT image sets were evaluated for image quality as the mean CT number and standard deviation. Dose evaluation also performed. The reference values did not significantly differ between the CT image sets with the corrected metal inserts. The higher-density material exhibited the largest difference in the mean CT number and standard deviation. The conformity index at Iterative-Metal Artifact Reduction (iMAR) was approximately 20% better than that of non-iMAR. No significant target or organ at risk dose difference was observed between non-iMAR and iMAR. Therefore, iMAR is helpful for target or organ at risk delineation and for reducing uncertainty for three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy in Tomotherapy.

Image quality of computed tomography (CT) is very vulnerable to metal artifacts. Recently, the thickness and background normalization techniques have been introduced. Since they provide flat sinograms, it is easy to determine metal traces and a simple linear interpolation would be enough to describe the missing data in sinograms. In this study, we have developed a theory describing two normalization methods and compared two methods with respect to various sizes and numbers of metal inserts by using simple numerical simulations. The developed theory showed that the background normalization provide flatter sinograms than the thickness normalization, which was validated with the simulation results. Numerical simulation results with respect to various sizes and numbers of metal inserts showed that the background normalization was better than the thickness normalization for metal artifact corrections. Although the residual artifacts still existed, we have showed that the background normalization without the segmentation procedure was better than the thickness normalization for metal artifact corrections. Since the background normalization without the segmentation procedure is simple and it does not require any users' intervention, it can be readily installed in conventional CT systems.

Purpose: The tissue description and electron density indicated by the Computed Tomography(CT) number (also known as Hounsfield Unit) in radiotherapy are important in ensuring the accuracy of CT-based computerized radiotherapy planning. The internal metal implants, however, not only reduce the accuracy of CT number but also introduce uncertainty into tissue description, leading to development of many clinical algorithms for reducing metal artifacts. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to investigate the accuracy and the clinical applicability by analyzing date from SMART MAR (GE) used in our institution. Methode: and material: For assessment of images, the original images were obtained after forming ROIs with identical volumes by using CIRS ED phantom and inserting rods of six tissues and then non-SMART MAR and SMART MAR images were obtained and compared in terms of CT number and SD value. For determination of the difference in dose by the changes in CT number due to metal artifacts, the original images were obtained by forming PTV at two sites of CIRS ED phantom CT images with Computerized Treatment Planning (CTP system), the identical treatment plans were established for non-SMART MAR and SMART MAR images by obtaining unilateral and bilateral titanium insertion images, and mean doses, Homogeneity Index(HI), and Conformity Index(CI) for both PTVs were compared. The absorbed doses at both sites were measured by calculating the dose conversion constant (cCy/nC) from ylinder acrylic phantom, 0.125cc ionchamber, and electrometer and obtaining non-SMART MAR and SMART MAR images from images resulting from insertions of unilateral and bilateral titanium rods, and compared with point doses from CTP. Result: The results of image assessment showed that the CT number of SMART MAR images compared to those of non-SMART MAR images were more close to those of original images, and the SD decreased more in SMART compared to non-SMART ones. The results of dose determinations showed that the mean doses, HI and CI of non-SMART MAR images compared to those of SMART MAR images were more close to those of original images, however the differences did not reach statistical significance. The results of absorbed dose measurement showed that the difference between actual absorbed dose and point dose on CTP in absorbed dose were 2.69 and 3.63 % in non-SMRT MAR images, however decreased to 0.56 and 0.68 %, respectively in SMART MAR images. Conclusion: The application of SMART MAR in CT images from patients with metal implants improved quality of images, being demonstrated by improvement in accuracy of CT number and decrease in SD, therefore it is considered that this method is useful in dose calculation and forming contour between tumor and normal tissues.
