  • This paper describes an adaptive hybrid evolutionary firefly algorithm for a topology optimization of truss structures. The truss topology optimization problems begins with a ground structure which is composed of all possible nodes and members. The optimization process aims to find the optimum layout of the truss members. The hybrid metaheuristics are then used to minimize the objective functions subjected to static or dynamic constraints. Several numerical examples are examined for the validity of the present method. The performance results are compared with those of other metaheuristic algorithms.

  • Although model updating has been widely applied using a specific optimization algorithm with a single objective function using frequencies, mode shapes or frequency response functions, there are few studies that investigate hybrid optimization algorithms for real structures. Many of them did not take into account the sensitivity of the updating parameters to the model outputs. Therefore, in this paper, optimization algorithms and sensitivity analysis are applied for model updating of a real cable-stayed bridge, i.e., the Kien bridge in Vietnam, based on experimental data. First, a global sensitivity analysis using Morris method is employed to find out the most sensitive parameters among twenty surveyed parameters based on the outputs of a Finite Element (FE) model. Then, an objective function related to the differences between frequencies, and mode shapes by means of MAC, COMAC and eCOMAC indices, is introduced. Three metaheuristic algorithms, namely Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA), Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO) and hybrid PSOGSA algorithm, are applied to minimize the difference between simulation and experimental results. A laboratory pipe and Kien bridge are used to validate the proposed approach. Efficiency and reliability of the proposed algorithms are investigated by comparing their convergence rate, computational time, errors in frequencies and mode shapes with experimental data. From the results, PSO and PSOGSA show good performance and are suitable for complex and time-consuming analysis such as model updating of a real cable-stayed bridge. Meanwhile, GSA shows a slow convergence for the same number of population and iterations as PSO and PSOGSA.

  • Fireworks Algorithm (FWA) is a relatively novel swarm-based metaheuristic algorithm for global optimization. To solve the low-efficient local searching problem and convergence of the FWA, this paper presents a Variable Amplitude Coefficient Fireworks Algorithm with Uniform Local Search Operator (namely VACUFWA). Firstly, the explosive amplitude is used to adjust improving the convergence speed dynamically. Secondly, Uniform Local Search (ULS) enhances exploitation capability of the FWA. Finally, the ULS and Variable Amplitude Coefficient operator are used in the VACUFWA. The comprehensive experiment carried out on 13 benchmark functions. Its results indicate that the performance of VACUFWA is significantly improved compared with the FWA, Differential Evolution, and Particle Swarm Optimization.

  • In this article, hybridization of enhanced colliding bodies optimization (ECBO) with upper bound strategy (UBS) that is called UECBO is proposed for optimum design of truss structures with frequency constraints. The distinct feature of the proposed algorithm is that it requires less computational time while preserving the good accuracy of the ECBO. Four truss structures with frequency limitations selected from the literature are studied to verify the viability of the algorithm. This type of problems is highly non-linear and non-convex. The numerical results show the successful performance of the UECBO algorithm in comparison to the CBO, ECBO and some other metaheuristic optimization methods.

  • There are various optimization problems in real world and research continues to solve them. An optimization problem is the problem of finding a combination of parameters that maximizes or minimizes the objective function. Harmony search is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm for solving optimization problems and it is designed to mimic the improvisation of jazz music. Harmony search has been actively applied to optimization problems in various fields such as civil engineering, computer science, energy, medical science, and water quality engineering. Harmony search has a simple working principle and it has the advantage of finding good solutions quickly in constrained optimization problems. Especially there are various application cases showing high accuracy with a low number of iterations by improving the solution through the empirical derivative. In this paper, we explain working principle of Harmony search and classify the leading research in recent 3 years, review them according to category, and suggest future research directions. The research is divided into review by field, algorithmic analysis and theory, and application to real world problems. Application to real world problems is classified according to the purpose of optimization and whether or not they are hybridized with other metaheuristic algorithms.

  • The optimum design of truss structures is one of the significant categories in structural optimization that has widely been applied by researchers. In the present study, new mathematical programming called Consistent Approximation (CONAP) method is utilized for the simultaneous optimization of the size and shape of truss structures. The CONAP algorithm has already been introduced to optimize some structures and functions. In the CONAP algorithm, some important parameters are designed by employing design sensitivities to enhance the capability of the method and its consistency in various optimum design problems, especially structural optimization. The cross-sectional area of the bar elements and the nodal coordinates of the truss are assumed to be the size and shape design variables, respectively. The displacement, allowable stress and the Euler buckling stress are taken as the design constraints for the problem. In the proposed method, the primary optimization problem is replaced with a sequence of explicit sub-problems. Each sub-problem is efficiently solved using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm. Several truss structures are designed by employing the CONAP method to illustrate the efficiency of the algorithm for simultaneous shape and size optimization. The optimal solutions are compared with some of the mathematical programming algorithms, the approximation methods and metaheuristic algorithms those reported in the literature. Results demonstrate that the accuracy of the optimization is improved and the convergence rate speeds up.

  • Studying slope stability is an important branch of civil engineering. In this way, engineers have employed machine learning models, due to their high efficiency in complex calculations. This paper examines the robustness of various novel optimization schemes, namely equilibrium optimizer (EO), Harris hawks optimization (HHO), water cycle algorithm (WCA), biogeography-based optimization (BBO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), grey wolf optimization (GWO), and teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO) for enhancing the performance of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in slope stability prediction. The hybrid models estimate the factor of safety (FS) of a cohesive soil-footing system. The role of these algorithms lies in finding the optimal parameters of the membership function in the fuzzy system. By examining the convergence proceeding of the proposed hybrids, the best population sizes are selected, and the corresponding results are compared to the typical ANFIS. Accuracy assessments via root mean square error, mean absolute error, mean absolute percentage error, and Pearson correlation coefficient showed that all models can reliably understand and reproduce the FS behavior. Moreover, applying the WCA, EO, GWO, and TLBO resulted in reducing both learning and prediction error of the ANFIS. Also, an efficiency comparison demonstrated the WCA-ANFIS as the most accurate hybrid, while the GWO-ANFIS was the fastest promising model. Overall, the findings of this research professed the suitability of improved intelligent models for practical slope stability evaluations.

  • ZnO varistor is a semiconductor device which can serve to protect the circuit from surge voltage because its non-linear I-V characteristics by controlling the microstructure of grain and grain boundaries. In order to obtain desired electrical properties, it is important to control microstructure evolution during the sintering process. In this research, we defined a dataset composed of process conditions of sintering and relative permittivity of sintered body, and collected experimental dataset with DOE. Meta-models can predict permittivity were developed by learning the collected experimental dataset on various machine learning algorithms. By utilizing the meta-model, we can derive optimized sintering conditions that could show the maximum permittivity from the numerical-based HMA (Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithm) optimization algorithm. It is possible to search the optimal process conditions with minimum number of experiments if meta-model-based optimization is applied to ceramic processing.

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to model updating for a large-scale cable-stayed bridge based on ambient vibration tests coupled with a hybrid metaheuristic search algorithm. Vibration measurements are carried out under excitation sources of passing vehicles and wind. Based on the measured structural dynamic characteristics, a finite element (FE) model is updated. For long-span bridges, ambient vibration test (AVT) is the most effective vibration testing technique because ambient excitation is freely available, whereas a forced vibration test (FVT) requires considerable efforts to install actuators such as shakers to produce measurable responses. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a famous metaheuristic algorithm applied successfully in numerous fields over the last decades. However, PSO has big drawbacks that may decrease its efficiency in tackling the optimization problems. A possible drawback of PSO is premature convergence leading to low convergence level, particularly in complicated multi-peak search issues. On the other hand, PSO not only depends crucially on the quality of initial populations, but also it is impossible to improve the quality of new generations. If the positions of initial particles are far from the global best, it may be difficult to seek the best solution. To overcome the drawbacks of PSO, we propose a hybrid algorithm combining GA with an improved PSO (HGAIPSO). Two striking characteristics of HGAIPSO are briefly described as follows: (1) because of possessing crossover and mutation operators, GA is applied to generate the initial elite populations and (2) those populations are then employed to seek the best solution based on the global search capacity of IPSO that can tackle the problem of premature convergence of PSO. The results show that HGAIPSO not only identifies uncertain parameters of the considered bridge accurately, but also outperforms than PSO, improved PSO (IPSO), and a combination of GA and PSO (HGAPSO) in terms of convergence level and accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimization algorithm that maximizes the network lifetime in wireless ad-hoc networks using the broadcast transmission method. The optimization algorithm proposed in this paper applies tabu search algorithm, a metaheuristic method that improves the local search method using the memory structure. The proposed tabu search algorithm proposes efficient encoding and neighborhood search method to the network lifetime maximization problem. By applying the proposed method to design efficient broadcast routing, we maximize the lifetime of the entire network. The proposed tabu search algorithm was evaluated in terms of the energy consumption of all nodes in the broadcast transmission occurring in the network, the time of the first lost node, and the algorithm execution time. From the performance evaluation results under various conditions, it was confirmed that the proposed tabu search algorithm was superior to the previously proposed metaheuristic algorithm.
