The accelerated aging population may lead to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and increase in medical costs as well. The aim of this study is to investigate the association with prevalence of metabolic abnormalities and its components in urban/rural area among Korean elderly. We examined the association between metabolic abnormalities and urban/rural area with data from the 2009 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects were 1,622 elderly aged 65 years or over. The sixty percent of Korean elderly reside in urban and 40 % in rural. Rural residents were significantly lower income and less educated than urban residents. But there was no significant different in nutritional factors. They showed significantly 26% lower likelihood of having metabolic syndrome (0.578-0.950, p=0.018) compared with urban residents. Urban residents were associated with higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome than rural residents. This results will contribute to develop strategy for prevention metabolic syndrome for Korean elderly according to urban/rural area.
This study identified vitamin E associated with metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome components among Korean adults aged over 19 years. Secondary data from the 2016-2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used for this study. Data from 6,425 were analyzed by logistic regression analysis using a complex sample procedure. As a result of logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio was increased in the group with high vitamin E levels compared to the group with normal vitamin E levels. There are metabolic syndrome (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR]: 1.889, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.550-2.303, p<.001), abdominal obesity (AOR: 1.444, CI: 1.205-1.730, p<.001), hyperglyceridemia(AOR: 3.182, CI: 2.641-3.835, p<.001), systolic blood pressure (AOR: 1.711, CI: 1.446-2.026, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure (AOR: 1.806, CI: 1.521-2.144, p<.001), low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (AOR: 1.558, CI: 1.060-2.290, p=.024). Therefore vitamin E was associated with metaboic syndrome and metabolic syndrome components. So when providing nursing intervention for people with metabolic syndrome, education on vitamin E should be actively included.

The aim of this study was to assess a dietary status and to examine the factors related to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Korean children and adolescents. For this study, 5,576 subjects aged 10~18 years, who participated in the health and dietary intake survey (24h recall method) of the 2007~2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), were sampled. The five components for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome in the subjects were taken from the modified NCEP-ATP III. The total prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the subjects was 4.6%. The total prevalences of the metabolic syndrome components among the subjects were central obesity 8.4%, hypertriglyceridemia 18.8%, low HDL-cholesterol 13.4%, hypertension 22.4%, and hyperglycemia 5.2%. The gender, age, weight status, frequency of daily meals and eating-out frequency of subjects affected the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Based on these results, There should be to improve the dietary guidelines and nutrition education to decrease the prevalence of metabolic syndrome for Korean children and adolescents.

Objectives: This study was performed to investigate if organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were associated with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance among non-diabetes. Methods: Among subjects who participated in a community-based health survey, 50 non-diabetic subjects with metabolic syndrome and 50 normal controls were selected. Insulin resistance was measured by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). Eight OCPs were selected. Results: After adjusting for confounders except for body mass index (BMI), beta-hexachlorocyclohexane ($\beta$-HCH) and heptachlor epoxide were positively associated with metabolic syndrome. Odds ratios across tertiles of $\beta$-HCH and heptachlor epoxide were 1.0, 3.2 and 4.4, and 1.0, 4.0 and 6.0, respectively (p for trend = 0.01 and <0.01). After additional adjustment for body mass index (BMI), heptachlor epoxide still showed an increasing trend with adjusted odds ratios of 1.0, 4.1, and 4.6 (p for trend = 0.10). When the five components of metabolic syndrome (with the definition of high fasting glucose ($\geq$ 100 mg/dL) were separately analyzed, all components were positively, but not significantly, associated with heptachlor epoxide. As the serum concentration of heptachlor epoxide increased, HOMA-IR increased significantly in subjects with metabolic syndrome even after adjusting for BMI (p value <0.05 and <0.01). Conclusions: Despite the small sample size, this study suggests that the background exposure to some OCPs may be associated with metabolic syndrome.

Background and Objectives : The aim of this study is verify the correlation between benign laryngeal mucosal disease and metabolic syndrome. Materials and Method : Data for patients diagnosed with benign laryngeal mucosal disease and metabolic syndrome from 2006 to 2015 were selected for analysis from the National Health Insurance Service database. Results : The prevalence of Metabolic syndrome was 2,179,785 out of 6,437,051 patients (33.86%). The prevalence of benign laryngeal mucosal disease was 516,594 out of 6,437,051 patients (8.03%). Metabolic syndrome was a risk factor for benign laryngeal mucosal disease [hazard ratio: 0.99, 95% confidence interval: 0.984-0.997] after adjusting for age and other variables including age, gender, smoking status, alcohol intake, exercise, body mass index, and diabetes. The number of metabolic syndrome components was also risk factor. Conclusion : Metabolic syndrome was related to the incidence of benign laryngeal mucosal disease. However this correlation did not seem to be high.
1. Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between adiponectin and metabolic syndrome according to Sasang Constitution. 2. Methods: Six hundred sixty six participants were included in this cohort study. Sex, age, BMI(Body Mass Index), smoking, drinking, adiponectin level and Metabolic syndrome components were considerd. Sasang constitutional diagnosis was carried out by a sasang constitutional specialist using photos, questionnaires and PSSC(Phonetic System for Sasang Classification). 3. Results: In binary logistic analysis after adjustment of age, sex, BMI, smoking, drinking, adiponectin level and sasang constitution were related with Metabolic syndrome. 4. Conclusions: We suggest that adiponectin and sasang constitution are the important biomarker in Metabolic syndorme.
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the impact of premature menopause (PM) on metabolic syndrome and its components to determine its contribution to the health of Korean women undergoing natural menopause. Methods: This study used data from the 4th to 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007~2021). A total of 11,989 women aged 30 to 65 who responded to questions about their current menstrual status, natural menopause status and its age. Complex sample multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used. Results: Compared with women with late menopause, women with PM had a 1.34 times higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Excluding the risk of high blood pressure, women with PM had a significantly higher risks of increased waist circumference, decreased high-density lipoprotein, increased risk of high triglycerides, and increased fasting blood glucose. Conclusions: The results of this study provided data that can be applied to policies or interventions to prevent or manage metabolic syndrome in women with PM in Korea.
Purposes: The purposes of this study are to investigate the definition, components, prevalence, and associated factors of metabolic syndrome and suggest the management strategies for workers. Method: This study was conducted by literature review. Results: Metabolic syndrome by the NCEP-ATP III is the clustering of three or more of five conditions: abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low levels of HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high glucose(blood sugar). The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome by modified NCEP-ATP III in South Korean workers was about 20 to 25%. Metabolic syndrome is caused by many associated factors, namely, age, family history, socioeconomic status, job strain, shift work, psychosocial distress, bad health behaviprs and so on. Conclusions: To prevent metabolic syndrome at worksites, multifactorial risk factor assessments and preventive approaches are required. Socioeconomic factors such as education, working status should be nationally importantly considered for the health inequality of workers. Occupational health nurse, at first, can start weight control, smoking cessation program. stress management, the improvement of work environment. Next stage, early diagnosis and treatment for metabolic risk group can be performed.
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between metabolic syndrome and its components and health-related quality of life in Korean adults. Metabolic syndrome defined in accordance with NCEP-ATP III, and HRQOL was evaluated using EQ-5D. Data on 16,657 adult, extracted from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys in 2016-2018, were analyzed and showed that 34.3% of subjects were metabolic syndrome, with males higher than females. The average score of HRQOL was 96.7 for men and 94.5 for women. Multiple logistic regression analysis was results, The OR of impaired HRQOL in women who metabolic syndrome was 1.27(95% CI: 1.09-1.46) compared to who women without metabolic syndrome. Among the components of metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity (OR=1.72, 95% CI: 1.50-1.97) and high blood pressure (OR=1.26, 95% CI: 1.06-1.50) were associated to impaired HRQOL. But, there were no significant in men. In conclusion, In order to improve women's HRQOL, it suggests that an approach strategy is necessary to reduce the risk factors of metabolic syndrome, which take into account women's characteristics.
