There are many hypothesis about mechanism of acupuncture, and the relationship between acupuncture stimulation and autonomic nervous system(ANS) is one of the powerful hypothesis. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between acupuncture stimulation and ANS. We searched the literature and reports related with acupuncture stimulation(meridian system, meridian points) and autonomic nervous system. And we concluded acupuncture stimulation can control autonomic nervous system. We reviewed studies that contributed to an understanding of the autonomic mechanisms of acupuncture with the hope that this review will be of benefit to the acupuncture treatment.

Objective : Zhang, Zhongjing(張仲景)'s Sanghanlun(傷寒論) is based on Six-channels system(六經) to classified a disease. But the notion of Six-channels system seems to be a very various angles. For example, Meridian and collateral theory(經絡說), Viscera and Bowels theory(臟腑說), Grade theory(段階說), Surface theory(地面說), Symptoms theory(症候群說), Six-disease theory(六病說), Eight principle pattern theory(八綱說) and all the rest of it. Above all things Meridian and collateral theory was very frequently quoted to explain the Six-channels system(六經). But it's true notion is not restrict to a meridian vessel(經脈). Method : I will try to describe the Sanghanlun's Greater yang disease(太陽病) through the Ke-qin(柯琴)'s Taiyangbingjie(太陽病解), and I would like to point out that the existing perception that Greater yang(太陽) is connected with Bladder meridian(足太陽膀胱經) is wrong. Result : Ke-qin's Taiyangbingjie explained the greater yang disease was connected with Heart(yang within yang), which was located in the top half and the outer layer of the body. In addition to the presence of the diaphragm or lungs are involved with. Conclusion : Practical meaning of greater yang disease is not connect with Bladder meridian, but it is related to the Heart and Lung for maintain the Nutrient and defense circulation (營衛循環).

Objectives : This study is designed to investigate the association between Samcho-gyeong(TE) and the lower branch of Meridian system. Methods : The base of the study was established by searching for the historic conception of Samcho. Thereafter the meaning of lower correlation was considered and the property of lower part of Samcho Meridian system studied. Results : Samcho is a kind of Yug-Bu(Six hollow viscera, 六腑). It is a functional internal organ, which has been continuously controversial in history. It covers wide range of the internal organs and plays various kinds of roles. Samcho and Simpo lack in interrelation of obverse and reverse. The conception of Sanghap(Upper correlation, 上合) in Naegyeong supplements the deficiency. To establish the conception of Sanghap between Yug-Bu and Hand meridians, there should be established the conception of Hahap(Lower correlation, 下合) between Yug-Bu and foot meridians for treating lower parts. The existence of Hahaphyeol(Lower confluent points, 下合穴) reveals that there were a lot of limits in treating JungHa-cho(Middle and Lower energizers, 中下焦) diseases only with the acupoints of the Hand meridians. Jogsamcho(Triple energizer of foot, 足三焦) meridian written in Taeso(太素), corresponds to the lower leg, and it is believed that it engages in treating diseases in the trunk of the body and Hacho(Lower energizer, 下焦). Conclusions : Therefore, it is believed that the lower part of meridian of Samcho can deal with the symptoms of lower back pain, leg pain, bladder disease, and so on. This study is meaningful in that it expands the range of treatment in acupoints of the regular meridians.

Objectives: Single colorectal instillation of trinitrobenzenesulphonic acid (TNBS) causes a dose-dependent increase of visceral motor response (VMR) and severity of inflammation. In this study we compared the effects of electroacupuncture in the different acupoints in the acute colitis induced by TNBS intracolonic injection in rats. Methods: In Male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing $250{\sim}400g$, a single colorectal administration of TNBS 5mg/kg and 50% ethanol under isoflurane anaesthesia after an overnight fast. Electrodes for electromyography (EMG) recording were stitched into the external oblique musculature under general anesthesia. Acupoints of LI4, ST25, or ST36 were stimulated by electroacupuncture, respectively. The balloon was inserted intra-anally and visceral motor response (VMR) to colorectal distensioin (CRD) was quantified with an EMG recording system. Results: At an observation of the visceral hyperalgesia in the day-time series, the visceromotor response increased significantly 3 days after TNBS intra-rectalcolonic injection in rats. Electroacupuncture on either ST25 or ST36 suppressed the visceromotor response to colorectal distension, but not LI4, at 3 days after TNBS injection. Pretreatment of naltrexone (10 mg/kg, i.p.), opioids antagonist, inhibited the VMR suppress of 10Hz EA to ST36 but not phentolamine (5 mg/kg, i.p.). Pretreatment of either naltrexone or phentolamine inhibited effects of 10Hz EA to ST25. Conclusions: Data show that EA at either ST25 or ST36 potently inhibits hypersensitivity of colorectum after TNBS induced colitis and is differently mediated through the endogenous opioid system and adrenergic system.

It has been known that Tri-origin theory could describe pertinently the dynamic phenomena of life. From the viewpoint of the asian image-mathematics, the most representative Tri-origin could be Four Images, Five Phases, and Six Qi(six kinds of weather). In Korean traditional medicine, Tri-origin could be meridian system, Jangbu viscera system, and body essence vital energy mentality blood system. Here we reasoned whether asian image-mathematics could be applicable to Korean traditional medicine system, and as a conclusion ; Meridian system belongs to Six Qi, Jangbu viscera system belongs to Five Phases, and body essence vital energy mentality blood system belongs to Four Images.

This study was examined for effects of acupuncture of Zusanli (ST36) on the facial thermography in health subjects. The volunteers who participating in this study had taken rest for 20 - 30 mins in room temperature (23-$25^{\circ}C$) before the examination and informed them what to prohibit smoking, drinking and administration of drug for the previous day. The thermography of face was taken using Infra-Red Imaging System (IR 2000, MEDI-CORE Co., Korea) by time interval of 15 minutes at 15 min before, just before and 15 min after, 30 min after and 45 min after acupuncture stimulation. Acupuncture was applied to the left ST36 for 30 mins. The results showed that acupuncture of ST36 significantly decreased the temperature of all the areas of facial surface comparing to those of control group. Also, it was observed that the quantities of thermal changes following acupuncture of ST36 been increased significantly at the A1, A4, A6, A7 and A9 ROIs (region of interest) comparing that of control group. Observed the thermography classified by ROI, it was clear the fact that acupuncture of ST36 could modulate the specific areas concerning to the facial pathway of Stomach Meridian, because the thermal responses following acupuncture of ST36 were specific at the A1, A2, A5 and A9 ROIs, relatively. These results suggest that acupuncture of ST36 may modulate thermal distributions and changes of facial areas concerned with Stomach Meridian.

십이경근(十二經筋)의 침구학적(鍼灸學的) 응용(應用)을 위하여 경사(經篩)의 형성과정(形成過程)과 그 본래의 의미에 대한 이해가 필요 할 것으로 사료되어 <<경근(經筋)>>에 기재된 십이경근(十二經筋)에 대한 분석(分析)을 통하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. <<내경(內經)>>에 수록된 "근"(筋)의 의미는 근육(筋肉), 건,(腱) 표재정맥(表在靜脈), 신경(神經) 등의 개염(槪念)을 포괄하고 있으며, <<경근(經筋)>>에서는 근육(筋肉)과 건을(腱) 의미를 내포하고 있다. 2. 경근(經筋)의 순행노선(循行路線)은 사지말단(四肢末端)에서 두신(頭身)으로 향하는 향심주(向心注) 노선(路線)을 보이고 있으며, 경근(經筋)의 병후(病候)는 대부분 순행부위에 따른 전근(轉筋)이나 동통(疼痛)으로 이러한 병후(病候)는 <<족비(足臂)>>의 경맥병후(經脈病候)의 특징과 같은 것으로 "소생병(所生病)"의미를 내포하고 있다. 3. 십이경근(十二經筋)은 해부학적(解剖學的) 관찰에 의해 형성된 것이 아니라 십이경맥(十二經脈)의 순행노선(循行路線)을 참조로 전신의 근육(筋肉)을 십이구역(十二區域)으로 분류(分類)하여 형성된 것으로 "근"(筋)을 통하여 인체(人體)를 상하로 연계시키는 규율에 대해 또 다른 가설을 제시한 것으로 사료된다.

Measurement of different skin parameters are widely used in the practices and researches of the modern acupuncture. The most important parameter is conductance or impedance. For measurement, some researchers used D.C. and others used A.C. It has been experimentally shown that the acupuncture points and meridian lines have the characteristics of high potential, low electrical resistance, high capacitance, spontaneous sound production, spontaneous light production, and high temperature. The Purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Hapkok(LI-4, 合谷) on experimental frequency characteristics in Hapkok. The result of data analyses indicated that significant differences arise at frequency under 100Hz. We propose that development of Meridian detecting system or Meridian diagnosis system should be done using frequency under 100Hz.

Four Properties and five Flavors of Drugs is interpreted by adaptation of human body to the environmental theory(天人相應). The Structural model of the body is compared with sky, earth, sun and moon (天, 地, 日, 月). The natural changes of the four seasons give rise to that of Four Properties and five Flavors of Drugs. On equal terms it is happened in our body. On this study we can draw an analogy between sky, earth, sun & moon (天, 地, 日, 月) and the body. The six bu(六腑) is related to the earth, the five ju(五主) to the sky, the five jang(五臟) to the sun, the meridians system (經絡) to the moon. When spring, the air is warm, the water element of the earth is ascending, and the earth gives birth to the sour flavor. Like this, the water element is absorbed by six bu and then is ascended to the meridian system. When summer, the air is hot and the water element of the earth is floated, the earth make the bitter flavor. In the same way, the six bu absorbed the hot air from the five ju and the water element is quickly absorbed by six bu and then the water element is ascended to the meridian system. When rainy season (長夏), the earth creates the sweet flavor The sweet flavor give warmer energy to the five jang and the six bu. When autumn, the earth change the sweet flavor into pungent. The earth gives warmer energy to the sky, because of cool weather According to same process, the pungent flavor give warmer energy to the five jang and the six bu, and the meridian system gets back the water element from the five ju. When winter, the air is cold and the water element of the earth is hidden. The sky and the earth are not interchangeable. At that time, the earth produce the salty flavor and the water element is keeping in the meridian system.

Objectives:Assuming that the characteristic of meridian system has been similar to that of electric potentials in human body and that measurements of electric potential at well(井穴) and sea(合穴) points in branches of the twelve meridians(WSBTM) will be representative of measurements of the twelve meridians, to measure the electric potentials of 17 patients with loin lesions, and pain of loin and lower extremities (腰脚痛, LWLE), to find out the characteristic of meridian system in patients with loin lesions. Methods:Electric potentials of well and sea points in the meridians in 17 patients with LWLE diagnosed by both CT or MRI and self view on pain at loin and lower extremities were repeatedly measured by physiograph(PowerLab). Measurements of those electrical potentials were analyzed by factor analysis. Results The electric potentials of WSBTM at the left side were divided into four factors. On the other hand those at the right side wert divided into three factors.
