The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of mental practice in increasing accuracy of performance during motor task. Forty healthy students aged 17 years were randomly assigned to two groups. The experimental group(n=20) performed mental practice; the control group(n=20) performed nothing. The task was dotting. No significant change was seen between pre and post test subtest results following mental practice sessions(p>0.05). The experimental group's accuracy improved a little but this was not valuable statistically(p>0.05). We could not prove that mental practice was effective in increasing accuracy of motor task performance.

In driving situation, driver’s performance can be divided into primary task and secondary task. Many studies of primary task have been in progress, but those of secondary task are not implemented sufficiently. However, the driver’s error is greatly influenced by secondary task. In this study, an experiment was assessed to determine the relationship between the driver's operation time for the secondary task and mental workload due to speed changes in a driving simulation. The time to perform the secondary task was analyzed with Fitts’ Law, and mental workload was analyzed with RNASA-TLX(Revision of NASA-Task Load Index). The results has showed that the higher speed, the weaker the explanation by the use of Fitts' Law and the result of analyzing mental workload using RNASA-TLX was similar to the result of Fitts’ Law.
This study examined whether any changes by mental task types on postural control in chronic stroke persons. Sixteen chronic stroke persons (mean age=53.75 yr) and sixteen age-and gender-matched healthy controls (mean age=54.44 yr) took part in this study. Participants randomly performed three different tasks on the stable and unstable surfaces. The no mental task was to stand while holding a 100 g weight in each hand, the arithmetic task (mental task) was to perform a silent 1-backwards counting while standing and holding a 100 g weight in each hand, and the simple task (mental task) was to stand and hold with both hands a tray (200 g) on which a glass filled with water has been placed. Sway path and sway velocity of the center of pressure (COP) were measured to assess standing postural control by task performance using the force platform. According to the results, in stroke group, total sway path and total sway velocity of COP was significantly decreased during arithmetic and simple task compared to no mental task on the stable surface (p<.05), and sway path (anteroposterior AP, mediolateral ML) of COP, total and sway velocity (AP, ML, total) of COP was significantly decreased during arithmetic and simple task compared to no mental task on the unstable surface (p<.05). Especially, sway path (AP, total) of COP and sway velocity (AP, ML, total) of COP was significantly decreased under the simple task when compared to the arithmetic task on the unstable surface (p<.05). In healthy control group, sway path (AP, ML, total) of COP and sway velocity (AP, ML, total) of COP was significantly decreased during arithmetic and simple task compared to no mental task on the stable and unstable surface (p<.05), and sway path (AP, total) of COP and sway velocity (AP, ML, total) of COP was significantly decreased under the simple task when compared to the arithmetic task on the unstable surface (p<.05). In conclusion, the findings of this study showed that arithmetic and simple task improved standing postural control for chronic stroke patients and the type of arithmetic and simple tasks were critical factor that reduced standing postural sway in dual-task conditions. Future research should determine whether dual-task conditions, including simple task, would be effective as a training program for standing postural control of stroke patients.

The purpose of this study was to find out effect of problem solving by mental demand of items and chunking level of problem solver on the item. The principal findings of study were as follows ; 1) According to increase of mental demand of items. students' achievement score appeared to decrease and the more mental demand an item needed. the higher or at least the same hierarchical item was. These results showed that mental demand of item was main factor which decided difficulties of problem solving. 2) Though items have the same mental demand. students' achievement score were different between balance beam task and 2nd law task (achievement score of balance beam task < achievement score of 2nd law task). 3) Achievement score of LM group who used chunked knowledge to solve balance beam task were higher than non LM group who used non chunked knowledge. 4) The level of chunked knowledge was different between two tasks when non LM group solved items of two tasks. On the other hand, LM group used the same level of chunked knowledge to solve items of two tasks. 5) Achievement score of non LM group was the same between items of two tasks after treatment due to chunking effect by treatment. But achievement score of LM group didn't change before and after treatment. The chunking effect by treatment had an effect on non LM group, but it was not on LM group.
This study investigated to the effects of a mental image drawing in RHD patients with left neglect. Three subjects participated in this study. All subjects were right handed and native speaker of korean. In task 1, the patients were presented with visual stimulus card directly above the response sheet and were asked to draw the picture. In task 2, they were presented with items auditorily and asked to draw the picture(mental image drawing). In all experimental conditions, there was no response time limit. The results showed that the subjects showed left neglect leaving some space on the left side in task 1. And the picture was drawn the left side from the right in direction. However, the neglect disappeared in task 2. And the picture was drawn the right side from the left in direction. The results of the present study suggested that a mental image drawing technique can be effective in treating individuals who exhibit left neglect. Also, the picture direction showed that the korean normality was same.
The purpose of this study was to investigate why advance organizers (AO) are effective in promoting comprehension and mental model formation in terms of cognitive load. Two experimental groups: a concept-map AO group and a key-word AO group and one control group were used. This study considered cognitive load in view of Baddeley's working memory model: central executive (CE), phonological loop (PL), and visuo-spatial sketch pad (VSSP). The present experiment directly examined cognitive load using dual task methodology. The results were as follows: central executive (CE) suppression task achievement for the concept map AO group was higher than the key word AO group and control group. Comprehension and mental model construction for the concept map AO group were higher than the other groups. These results indicated that the superiority of concept map AO owing to CE load decrement occurred with comprehension and mental model construction in learning. Thus, the available resources produced by CE load reduction may have been invested for comprehension and mental model construction of learning contents.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the problem solving strategies of elementary school students and to find out correlations between the functional mental capacity, the perseveration error and the Creature Card Task solving ability. To study this purpose, four categories were selected through pilot test. The sample consisted of 231, the 4th grade students and the 5th grade students in Inchon, Korea and selected 32 students among them. Three instruments were used in this study, Creature Card Task, FIT(Figural Intersection Test) and WCST(Wisconsin Card Sorting Test). Researcher interviewed 32 students about Creature Card Task solving strategies and tests with FIT, WCST. Major findings of the study are as follows: 1. Creature Card Task solving strategies of the selected 4th & 5th grade students were different. Some students solved problems during individual interviews. 2. Creature Card Task solving abilities were significantly correlated with the functional mental capacity and the perseveration error.
The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of visual block (eyes open or closed), mental task type, and participation in an exercise program on static balance in the elderly. The subjects were 34 elderly (>65 years old) residents of a social welfare institute in Gyeonggi-do. We measured the following variables. Berg balance scale, mini mental state examination, balance performance monitor (sway area, path, and maximal sway velocity), age, weight, height and whether the subject participated in an exercise program. Scores for the Berg balance scale and mini mental state examination were evaluated to assess static balance ability either alone (single task paradigm) or while performing a mental task (dual task paradigm). Static balance variables that were measured included sway area, path, and maximal sway velocity. Each test was repeated three times. Multiple regressions analysis was used to examine the effect of each variable on static balance ability. For the dual task paradigm, static balance was affected by whether the subject participated in an exercise program. The Berg balance scale score for subjects with their eyes open was affected by whether they participated in an exercise program, while this variable in addition to the height and weight of subjects were determining variables in subjects with their eyes closed. As a result, whether subjects participated in an exercise program affected their static balance irrespective of whether their eyes open or closed. Therefore, regular exercise is recommended for elderly people and further research is needed to examine the relationship between static and dynamic balance while performing mental tasks such as cognition and attention.

The development of cognitive psychology provides us a theoretical base from which we can obtain information about human problem solving. One purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cognitive psychological factors on the problem solving of the two kinds of tasks (content free, content specific). And the other purpose was to find out the existence of critical situation in problem solving process. Even the items of tasks with the same logical structure and content knowledge could have different sizes of mental demand. The results were as follows. The mental demand of the problem, and the problem solver's mental capacity, might be the main factors in problem solving. Critical situation of both a group and an individual existed in the tasks that need content free knowledge (FIT 752 task). But the critical situation of a group was completely different from that of the individual in the tasks that need content specific knowledge (electric circuit task). According to the analysis of achievement for each individual in the task that need content specific knowledge, the critical situation of an individual existed in problem solving, but the critical situation of a group was not existed by were summed up the individual results.

This paper examines the effects on mental task of changes in the intensity of physical activity. A treadmill-equipped instrument and perception tester were used to attain several levels of physical activity. In this paper, in order to determine the individual levels of physical activity of subjects, Borg-RPE scale, heart rate(HR) and respiratory quotient(RQ) were used. Also, an arithmetic addition test in whole-body activity on treadmill-equipped instrument as an indicator of mental task were performed. In the above experiments, the scores obtained in arithmetic addition test administered before and after physical activity at each intensity level used. Restricted within the limits of this paper, the results of these tests showed that the performance of mental task was Increased after physical activity.
