  • Justeresos loops of melt-spun Nd13Fe77B10 cooled down at remanent state were measured at 4.2 K and 250 K. The hysteresis loops were analysed on the basis of the Stoner-Wohlfarth (S-W) model, the inter-grain exchange coupled single domain (SD) model and micromagnetism. The coercivity higher than that predicted from the S-W model and the striking shift of the thin minor loop along the H-axix observed at the fields of Hmax=4MA/m at 4.2 K indicated new evidences for the inter-grain exchange interaction . The S-W model failed in explaining the high iHc and the shift of the thin minor loop. The exchange coupled SD model was found to explain the experimental results qualitatively without difficulties associated with the S-W model. The micromagnetic calculations using a finite element technique simulated the experimental results fairly well quntitatively.

  • Magnetic properties and microstructures of melt spun misch metal-ferroboron alloys were investigated. The major phase is the tetragonal (rare earth)$_2Fe_{14}B$ phase. Magnetic properties showed coercivity of 5.6 kOe, remanence of 7.85 kG, and so energy product 8.9 MGOe. Microsturctures in optimum properties showed that matrix was composed of Ce-rich phase while second phase La-rich-oxygen phase with less amount of Fe element than matrix, and triple junction with La-rich phase contrary to matrix.

  • A new hot-forming process has been studied to produce anisotropic Nd-Fe-B based magnets from melt-spun ribbons. The ribbon fragments were inserted in a Cu tube and hot-deformed together with one-stroke. At a height reduction ratio of 0.44, the melt-spun ribbons were densified into a magnet with a density of 7.14 g/cm3, and showed a (BH)max of 14.6 MGOe. With further deformation, the magnets were plastically deformed with Cu tubes in the lateral direction, and crystallographic anisotropy was introduced. The magnets with a height reduction ratio of 0.75 exhibited magnetic properties of (BH)max = 32.1 MGOe, Br = 11.7 kG, and iHc = 10.6 kOe. This process shows the possibility that the conventional hot-pressing and subsequent die-upsetting for anisotropic magnets can be simplified into a one-step process.
