Nanocomposite Magnetic Materials

  • Recent developments in nanocrystalline and nanocomposite rare earth-transition metal magnets are reviewed and emphasis is placed on research work at IFW Dresden. Principal synthesis methods include high energy ball milling, melt spinning, mold casting and hydrogen assisted methods such as reactive milling and hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination. These techniques are applied to NdFeB-, PrFeB- and SmCo-type systems with the aim to produce high remanence magnets with high coercivity. Concepts of maximizing the energy density in nanostructured magnets by either inducing a texture via anisotropic HDDR or hot deformation or enhancing the remanence via magnetic exchange coupling are evaluated. With respect to high temperature applications melt spun $Sm(Co_{0.74}Fe_{0.1}Cu_{0.12}Zr_{0.04})_{7.5}$ ribbons were prepared, which showed coercivities of up to 0.53 T at 50$0^{\circ}C$. Partially amorphous $Nd_{60}Fe_xCo_{30-x}Al_{10}(0{\leq}x{\leq}30)$ alloys were prepared by copper mold casting. The effect of transition metal content on the glass-forming ability and the magnetic properties was investigated. The $Nd_{60}Co_{30}Al_{10}$ alloy exhibits an amorphous structure shown by the corresponding diffraction pattern. A small substitution of Co by 2.5 at.% Fe results In the formation of Fe-rich crystallites embedded in the Nd-rich amorphous matrix. The Fe-rich crystallites show hard magnetic behaviour at room temperature with a coercivity value of about 0.4 T, relatively low saturation magnetization and a Curie temperature of 500 K.

  • (NdㆍDy)-(FeㆍCoㆍAIㆍM)-B 합금에 Sn,Mo등을 첨가하여 그에 따른 미세구조와 열적안정성 및 자기적 특성 변화를 조사하였다. Sn과 Mo의 첨가는 (NdㆍDy)-(FeㆍCoㆍAIㆍM)-B 합금리본의 큐리온도를 크게 향상시켰으며 자기특성, 특히 보자력을 1KOe이상 증가시켰다. 그리고 이러한 현저한 보자력 증가는 입계형 defect인 disturbed grain boundary defect에 기인하는 것이라 판단되었다. 또한 Sn과 Mo 첨가원소는 irreversible loss를 각각 4%와 6% 감소시켜 리본자석의 열적안정성을 향상시켰다. 이는 Sn과 Mo의 첨가가 보자력을 크게 증가시켰기 때문이다. 한편 (NdㆍDy)-(FeㆍCoㆍAIㆍM)-B 리본자석들의 열저항온도(heat resistance temperature)는 irreversible loss와 직선관계를 이루었다.

용융방사한 고밀도 폴리에틸렌 폴리프로필렌 블렌드 섬유의 물리적 성질 (Physical Properties of the Melt Spun Fibers of the High Density Polyethylene and Polypropylen Blends)

  • 고밀도 폴리에틸렌과 폴리프로필렌을 용융혼합하여 블렌드를 만들었다. 압출물의 morphology 와 유변학적 성질을 측정하고 그 용융하고 섬유의 X-선 회절, 인장 성질, 복굴 절률등과 관련하여 고찰하였다. 파단면의 SEM 사진으로부터 폴리에티렌 성분비가 25%, 50% 에서는 폴리프로필렌이, 75%에서는 폴리에틸렌이 연속상을 이루며 분산상은 고르게 분포함을 알았다 점도와 용융탄성은 모두 폴리에틸렌이 폴리프로필렌보다 크며 블렌드에서 는 그중간에 위치 하였다. 폴리에틸렌의 함량의 증가에 따라 압풀물의 제 1법선 응력차는 증가하였고따라서 방사 섬유의 복굴절률도 증가하였으며 초기 탄성률도 증가하는 경향을 보 였으나 결정 배향도는 조성 의존성을 갖지 않는다. 두 고분자의 비상용성으로 인해 강도는 짓선성에서 벗어나는 거동을 나타내었다.

Nd-Fe-B계 급냉리본의 산화거동과 자기적 특성 (Oxidation Behavior and Magnetic Properties of Nd-Fe-B Based Melt-Spun Ribbons)

  • Nd-(Fe, Co)-B합금에 Ni, Al, Ti등을 복합치환하여 그에 따른 산화거동과 자기적 성질의 변화를 조사하였다. 이들 리본의 산호거동은 parabolic한 거동을 나타내고 있으며, Ni 첨가시 매우 낮은 산화량을 나타내었다. 또한 산화된 리본은 Nd-rich상의 우선적 산화에 의해 표면에 요철이 관찰되었으며 Ni 첨가시 그러한 요철은 많이 줄어들었다. 표면의 산화층은 Nd산화물이었고, 이는 입계에 있는 Nd-rich상이 산화되고 이것이 확산 통로로 작용하였다고 생각된다. 산화가 진행됨에 따라 입계상에 의한 domain wall pinning이 약해져 자기특성이 저하하였다. 그러나 Ni 첨가시 이러한 산화거동이 크게 억제되었으며 Ni의 첨가는 Nd-rich상의 산화저항성을 증가시킴으로써 리본의 산화를 억제해 자기특성의 저하를 억제하였다.

  • The glass formation behavior was investigated in the melt spun Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-X (X=B, P and Si) ribbons. The magnitude of supercooled liquid region of Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni alloy increased with an addition of alloying element. The glass transition temperature and the crystallization temperature increased and the magnitude of supercooled liquid region decreased with increasing the content of alloying elements. The largest supercooled liquid region was observed in the Si containing alloy. This is believed to be due to the dense atom packing with the optimum atomic size ratio of constituent elements.

  • 광섬유 간섭계를 이용하여 급속응고 리본 및 박막의 자기변형을 측정하였다. 급속응고 리본인 METGLAS 2826MB의 자기변형값은 보고된 값과 매우 잘 일치하였다. 또한 광섬유에 박막코팅된 거대 자기변형재료의 하나인 Sm-Fe계 합금의 자기변형값을 측정하였다.

Nano-scale Shell in Phase Separating Gd-Ti-Al-Co Metallic Glass

  • In the present study, formation of yard and shell has been investigated in as-melt-spun $Gd_{30}Ti_{25}Al_{25}Co_{20}$ alloy using a variety of transmission electron microscopy techniques. The phase separation during cooling leads to the formation of the microstructure consisting of amorphous droplets with different size scales embedded in the amorphous matrix. Due to the interdiffusion at the interface after the first-step phase separation, ~50 nm-thick yard develops on the surface of the primary droplet particle. Due to the critical wetting phenomenon, ~5 nm thickness shell enveloping the droplet forms. The sell is enriched in Co and Ti, implying that the composition is close to that of the droplet.

  • Multiblock copolymer was synthesized by the copolycondensation of oligo(L-lactic acid) prepared by thermal dehydration of L-lactic acid, Pluronic$\^$TM/(PN) and dodecanedioic acid as carboxyl/hydroxyl adjusting agent. This polycondensation proceeded by catalysis of stannous oxide to give the multiblock copolymers with high molecular weight and wide range of compositions. Polymer film was prepared by casting the chloroform solution of the multiblock copolymers having different composition. The multiblock copolymers having relatively high contents of poly(L-lactide) were melt spun into filaments which were subsequently drawn at 60$^{\circ}C$. The copolymer films and the filaments showed an improved flexibility due to the incorporation of the soft segments.

  • This study has investigated the effect of thermal stability and mechanical property of $Fe_{80-X}P_{10}C_6B_4M_X$(X=2, 4, 6, M=transition metal) amorphous alloys fabricated by the melt-spun process. The glass transition temperature($T_g$), crystallization temperature($T_x$) and hardness increase with decreasing electron concentration (e/a) from about 7.38 to 7.18. The decrease of e/a implies the increase in the attractive bonding state between the M elements and other constituent element. The decrease in a/e leads to the enhancement of the attractive bonding state among the constituent elements which is favorable for the increase in $T_g$, $T_x$ and hardness.

Enhanced Exchange Coupling of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B/Fe_3B$ Magnet Via Magnetic Field Treatment

  • An externally applied magnetic field during heat treating the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B/Fe_3B$ based spring magnet was found to enhance the exchange coupling between the hard and soft magnetic grains. More than 30% increase in $M_r/M_s$ values for melt-spun $Nd_2Fe_{73.5}Co_3$$(Hf_{1-x}Ga_x)B_{18.5}$ (x=0, 0.5, 1) alloys was resulted from a uniform distribution of $Fe_3B, \alpha-Fe$ and $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phases, and also from a reduced grain size of those phases by 20%. The externally applied magnetic field induced a uniform distribution of fine grains. A study of Mossbauer effect also report that the enhancement of total magnetization of nanocomposite $Nd_2Fe_{14}B/Fe_3B$ alloys is attributed to an increased formation of $Fe_3$B after magnetic annealing.
